THE BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT’s NATIONAL  LANDSCAPE CONSERVATION SYSTEM: HIKING  OPPORTUNITIES

One of the best ways to appreciate the unique resources of the newest system of public  lands in America is to go out and take a hike on one of the many units that comprise the  BLM's Conservation System. Not only does American Hiking work to protect these great  trails, we also provide resources so that you can explore the Conservation System’s  thousands of miles of hiking trails.

The BLM’s Conservation System Manages 13 National Scenic and Historic Trails. With  more than 4,500 miles of great National Trails, it manages more trail mileage than  any other agency.

National Scenic Trails managed by the BLM:
 • Continental Divide National Scenic Trail
 • Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail
 • Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail

National Historic Trails managed by the BLM:
 • California National Historic Trail
 • El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail
 • Iditarod National Historic Trail
 • Juan Bautista d’Anza National Historic Trail
 • Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail
 • Mormon Heritage National Historic Trail
 • Nez Perce National Historic Trail
 • Old Spanish National Historic Trail
 • Oregon National Historic Trail
 • Pony Express National Historic Trail

For more information about National Scenic and Historic Trails, see the Partnership for the  National Trails System.

In addition to 13 National Scenic and Historic Trails, the BLM manages thousands of miles of spectacular undesignated trails. In 2005, American Hiking Society and American Rivers partnered to highlight a series of great hiking trails and floatable rivers on BLM lands in the west. To explore these special rivers and trails click here.

American Hiking Society is compiling a database of all the hiking trails in the Conservation System. Click Here to explore this in-progress database and discover thousands of great western trails.
