| Senior Director, Stewardship and Policy |
|
| POSITION SUMMARY |
| The Senior Director, Stewardship & Policy (Director) oversees and has primary responsibility for the public policy, national and regional trails, and volunteer programs of American Hiking Society. The Director works with Congress, federal agencies, and conservation and recreation partners to shape public policy and legislation affecting hiking. Responsibilities include advocating for the funding and protection of hiking trails, promoting policies and practices that ensure the preservation of natural areas (or opposing policies detrimental to conservation and hiking), and promotion and protection of the hiking experience. The Director supervises American Hiking’s Policy, Trail Programs, Volunteer Vacations and regional trails and advocacy efforts, including consultants (currently a total of three full-time and two contract personnel). The Director reports to the President and is based at the organization headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, with required travel to conferences and special events, as needed. |

| AMERICAN HIKING INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES |
American Hiking offers internships throughout the year to
students in both our Silver Spring, Maryland and Chattanooga, Tennessee
offices. We welcome interns who want to learn about non-profit management,
recreation and conservation policy, volunteer programs, communications,
fundraising and development. Each intern receives a diverse and well rounded
experience.

American Hiking Society provides a dynamic non-profit
atmosphere. Currently, there are different areas of specialization prospective
interns may choose from: Policy, Trail Programs, and Grassroots Organizing;
however, there may be significant overlap between areas depending on the
intern's skills and interests as well as departmental needs. Those interested
in other areas of focus are always welcome to apply. Candidates must possess
excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong research and
organizational skills, and demonstrated interest in conservation and/or outdoor
recreation.

| Maryland Office, Silver Spring |
|
| POLICY |
Activities include attending meetings/hearings on Capitol Hill
and with federal agency staff; tracking and analyzing legislation and policies
related to recreation and conservation; and outreach to member organizations.

| TRAIL PROGRAMS |
Activities include research, writing, and outreach related to
programs such as National Trails Day® and Volunteer Vacations and assisting
with special events.

|
| GENERAL INFORMATION |
Interns work out of American Hiking Society's office in Silver
Spring, MD, one block outside of Washington, DC. Interns will receive a stipend
($500/mo F/T) and can work full-time or part-time, with flexible scheduling.

|
| GRASSROOTS ORGANIZING |
Activities include research, writing, and outreach related to
the Southeast Trails Program, which is a joint project of American Hiking
Society and the National Park Service’s Rivers, Trails and Conservation
Assistance (RTCA) program. Some trail work may also be required. Candidates
should have excellent communication and organizational skills, as well as
familiarity with Microsoft Office tools (including PowerPoint).

| GENERAL INFORMATION |
Interns work out of American Hiking Society's office in
Chattanooga, Tennessee. This office is a National Park Service’s RTCA Field
Office. Interns will receive a $500 stipend and some travel expenses, and are
required to work at least 320 hours total, full-time or part-time, with
flexible scheduling.
