National Trails System
The National Trails System consists of 23 national scenic and historic trails and over 800 national recreation trails. Eight National Scenic Trails, including the Appalachian Trail, protect continuous scenic corridors for outdoor recreation, and fifteen National Historic Trails, including the Lewis and Clark Trail, reflect historical eras and routes used for exploration, migration, and trade.
National Recreation Trails
Over 800 trails—available for public use and ranging from less than a mile to 485 miles in length—have been designated as National Recreation Trails (NRTs) on federal, state, local and privately owned lands. Visit their web site for application procedures and an online searchable NRT database. |
