Best Hikes of the BLM's Conservation System Contest The purpose of this contest is to raise awareness of America's newest Conservation System and to promote citizen stewardship of American Public Lands. Enter Best NLCS Hikes Contest | View Contest Rules The Bureau of Land Management's National Landscape Conservation System offers some of the most remarkable landscapes found on public lands in the American West. Each of these places has received special recognition and protection through congressional or presidential conservation designations. The Conservation System not only focuses on the management needs of these national treasures, but also raises public awareness of their cultural, ecological, scientific, and other values. They also offer some of the world's greatest hiking adventures. When you enjoy these hikes, remember to Leave No Trace. The BLM manages approximately 13% of the surface area of America for multiple uses – part of the larger mission of the Bureau to sustain the health of the public lands for present and future generations, an increasing challenge in the rapidly growing west.
