SUMMARY:Arizona National Scenic Trail Northern Terminus\, AZ - Volunteer Vacations 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join this rare opportunity to work in one of the most remote and unique portions of the Arizona National Scenic Trail! The Arizona National Scenic Trail is a continuous\, 800+ mile diverse and scenic trail across Arizona from Mexico to Utah. Along the way it takes hikers\, bikers and equestrians through a diverse landscape of deserts\, mountains canyons and communities and showcases the best of what the Grand Canyon State has to offer. We will be working to restore the northernmost portion of the trail as it winds to it’s terminus at the Utah border. Not only is the landscape exceptional – the community of long-distance hiking will be in full swing as north-bound hikers come in to complete their long trek. \nVolunteer work will involve brushing\, drain construction and maybe some rockwork projects. This area was affected by fire in 2020\, and this project will be an important part of the recovery process. Access to the project work site will involve a hike of approximately 2-4 miles per day with moderate elevation gain (no more than 1000′). The trail is well established. \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. All you need is a willing attitude and to be in good physical condition to participate in moderate physical activity for approximately 6-8 hours a day with plenty of breaks\, at your own pace. Find out more about what it’s like to join a Volunteer Vacation and other frequently asked questions here. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the “Nuwuvi (Southern Paiute)\, Pueblos\, Núu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute) peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, their deep and sacred connection to these lands\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. We offer this land acknowledgement as the first of many steps to stand as an ally and amplify Indigenous voices. We invite the American Hiking Society community to join us through continued efforts to support Indigenous communities and learn more about the history of the lands on which we live\, work and recreate.

SUMMARY:Tonto National Forest\, Arizona - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Come help us build new trail to improve some of the most memorable hikes in Arizona! The 17 miles that the AZT shares with the Highline National Recreation Trail is one of the most historic trail corridors in the Southwest. Here\, the pines reach to the sky and the vistas stretch out forever as the trail follows the base of the Mogollon Rim and climbs to the Colorado Plateau. For those who are familiar with this territory\, it can be as challenging as it is beautiful. Much of the trail is on old roads or historic ranch routes that were not designed with sustainability in mind. As a result\, much of the tread is badly eroded\, steep and choked with loose rock and debris. Creating a more sustainable alignment and user-friendly corridor is an ongoing battle for trail crews on planners alike. \nThe Tonto National Forest has launched a concerted effort to replace some of these badly eroded sections of the Highline with new\, sustainable tread – including approximately 1.2 miles on the AZT near Washington Park. Volunteers will be involved in all stages of construction\, to include brushing\, building tread\, small stone work projects and moving debris. The hike to and from the worksite will be between 1 and 3 miles each day. The Arizona Trail Association’s program prides itself on providing superior hospitality to its volunteers\, including excellent meals\, detailed training and beautiful camping locations. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Pueblos\, Ndee/Nnēē: (Western Apache)\, Hopitutskwa\, and Hohokam peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. AHS invites all volunteers to join us in our commitment to support and amplify the work of Indigenous communities as they work to dismantle the systems of oppression that these communities continue to face today.

SUMMARY:Tonto National Forest - Volunteer Vacations 2021
DESCRIPTION:In 2020 more than 125 miles of the Arizona National Scenic Trail was impacted by wildfire. The largest of the fires to impact the trail was the Bush Fire in central Arizona which consumed more than 190\,000 acres and closed 40 miles of the AZT through the Four Peaks and Pine Mountain. As initial assessments have been completed it is clear that the recovery from the fire will be long and will require a massive effort from volunteers and paid crews alike to open the trail and keep it safe for users. The need is critical and the work will help us keep a piece of beloved trail from fading back into the wild. Our efforts will concentrate on the area between El Oso Road and Boulder Creek\, stabilizing creek crossings\, repairing switchbacks and clearing any deadfall that has blocked the trail. There’s little brush left\, so the majority of the work will be digging and tread rehabilitation. All tools and instruction will be provided – if you’ve always wanted a chance to work with big rocks – this is it! \nCURRENT COVID TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE (Link)

SUMMARY:Tonto National Forest - Arizona National Scenic Trail
DESCRIPTION:TRIP CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19: \n  \nThe Arizona National Scenic trail travels 800 miles across the state of Arizona between the Mexican border and Utah. It highlights the diversity of wild landscapes in Arizona from the iconic Sonoran desert to deep ponderosa forests. This project is located in the rugged and mysterious Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix and involves building approximately 1 mile of new trail to bypass a tricky road near the head of Cottonwood Canyon. This area was burned in the 2019 Woodbury fire\, but regrowth is coming back fast. Working on gently sloping terrain in rocky soils\, we’ll need to brush a corridor\, clear the tread and build some rock maintenance structures. We’ll be using standard digging tools such as picks\, shovels\, and McCleods as well as some lopping and sawing. Our camp will be close to the work site\, but each time we build more trail\, we’ll walk farther to access it.

SUMMARY:Coronado National Forest\, Arizona National Scenic Trail
DESCRIPTION:The Arizona National Scenic trail travels 800 miles across the state of Arizona between the Mexican border and Utah. It highlights the diversity of wild landscapes in Arizona from the iconic Sonoran desert to deep ponderosa forests. This project is taking place on the Coronado National Forest\, in the Canelo Hills of southern Arizona. The Canelo Hills West passage of the trail is the second passage north of the border and crosses low\, grassy hills between the Huachuca and Santa Rita Mountains from Parker Canyon Lake to Canelo Pass. Our project involves constructing new trail to replace legacy trail and forest roads that have been in this area for decades. One of the Arizona Trail Association’s main goals in recent years has been to get the trail off of old roads and two track wherever possible\, and (pending clearances) this area holds a great opportunity to move on that goal. Tasks include clearing vegetation\, benching and digging trail tread\, small rock work projects and removing debris. The hike to and from the worksite will be between 3 and 5 miles each day over rolling hills.

SUMMARY:Coconino National Forest
DESCRIPTION:This project will be on Passage 29 of the Arizona National Scenic Trail which travels 30+ miles on the forested Colorado Plateau. This isn’t the desert many people imagine when they think of Arizona\, but instead a vast Ponderosa woodland\, rich with wildlife and human history. Unfortunately\, about 18 miles of this passage currently lay on roadway. The USFS Mogollon Rim Ranger District has launched a concerted effort to remove the trail from roadway and construct new trail to National Scenic Trail standards. This project will be creating new single-track through the forest canopy\, across meadows and stretches of chaparral. It may include brushing\, tread work\, small stone work projects and moving debris. The hike to and from the worksite will be between 1 and 4 miles each day. \nThis trip is hosted and crew led by the Arizona Trail Association.
