SUMMARY:Sheep Mountain - Volunteer Vacations 2021
DESCRIPTION:Sheep Mountain Trail is a non-motorized trail that winds up an impressive box canyon to the top of Sheep Mountain. The trail is a popular destination due to its desirable settings and close proximity to both Buffalo Bill State Park and US Hwy 14\, which connects Cody to Yellowstone National Park. The trail starts at 5650 ft. elevation. After 2 miles\, at 6900 ft. elevation\, visitors can find an old historic cabin. This marks the end of the designated trail. From here\, BLM-administered public land and The Nature Conservancy land is open to the public for further exploration. Many undeveloped routes can lead visitors to one of the several high points on Sheep Mountain. Volunteers are needed to restore sections of the Sheep Mountain Trail. This would include trimming brush and vegetation\, surface water control using water bars\, grade dips and ponding\, removal of roots\, stumps\, and rocks\, improving drainage\, fixing tread creep\, building crib walls\, slough and berm work\, and signage and marker installations. \nCURRENT COVID TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE (Link)

SUMMARY:Muddy Mountain Environmental Education Area
DESCRIPTION:TRIP CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19: \n  \nCamp on the high plains of central Wyoming. Enjoy the wild west frontier and see what the pioneers of the great American westward expansion saw almost 200 years ago. The Interpretive Natural Trail is a National Recreation Trail and is handicap accessible. In order to maintain this accessibility\, trail maintenance must be performed annually including the addition of new gravel/ trail base. Accommodations will be located at the work site\, at the Lodgepole Campground within the Environmental Education Area. After work\, enjoy a hike to the Beaver Ponds and fish for stocked trout or bring your mountain bike for a fun adventure. The National Historic Trails Interpretive Center will provide an interpretive presentation about historic trail use\, bringing the history of American trails to life as we work on modern day trails.

SUMMARY:Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area is the BLM’s most easterly unit of the National Conservation Lands. The site\, known for its namesake lighthouse\, was designated by congress in 2008 for the protection and enhancement of various resources – including recreation. The 120-acre site is located in the highly urbanized south Florida atlantic coastline\, just 1/4 mile from the Atlantic Ocean. The site itself is visited by over 100\,000 people each year to engage in everything from fishing to cultural appreciation. The site currently contains 1.5 miles of trail (both ADA and Natural Surface) that require routine maintenance. In addition to the existing trails a number of new trails are planned\, but remain unconstructed. The goal of this project is to complete any needed maintenance on the existing trails (involving brushing\, tread stabilizations/surfacing and general maintenance of the trail corridor) and clear and construct all or portions of the planned trails. These planned trails include shoreline access spur trails and a new loop trail providing increased walking/hiking opportunities on the site. Tools involved include trimmers\, chain saws\, shears\, loppers\, and shovels. However the workload is largely manual labor clearing vegetation\, moving and spreading mulch\, setting natural materials to mark trail edges and general tidying of the trail corridor. The overall goal for the week is to enjoy some time enhancing the recreational values of the Outstanding Natural Area\, while becoming familiar with one of the Bureau’s more unique sites in the National Conservation Lands.

SUMMARY:Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument
DESCRIPTION:This project will help improve three trails (Mt. Trumbull\, Nampaweap\, Mt. Logan) within a 10 mile area. The Mt. Trumbull and Mt. Logan trails are in designated Wilderness Areas. These trails would likely receive more visitors if the trails were in better condition. Volunteers would help improve outstanding recreation opportunities on these two trails by moving small blown down trees from a recent wildfire and brushing back vegetation overgrowth on the trail. The Mt. Logan Overlook trail would be especially spectacular as it leads to a natural amphitheater of red and yellow limestone. This has been inaccessible for years due to poor trail maintenance. The Nampaweap Trail is in fairly good condition\, but would involve some surface re-contouring and cutting back vegetation near panels of Native American rock writing. The tools to be used would be hand tools\, such as a: pulaski\, mcleod\, shovel\, rake\, brush trimmers and clippers\, wheel barrows\, and may include cross-cut saws. The overall goal for the week would be to open these areas to more visitors to enjoy and experience hiking in the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument. This project would come on the heels of completing new trailheads at each site.

SUMMARY:Sophie's Flat/Red Top Trail System
DESCRIPTION:Sophie’s Flat Trail includes 15 miles of non-motorized trails that wind along hills and washes of the beautiful Sonoran Desert. The project will include replacing carsonite signs and repairing sections of the trail that have been eroded by rain and heavy usage. Elevation gain along the trail is easy to moderate. Volunteers will use shovels\, McLeods\, pickaxes\, folding saws and rakes.

SUMMARY:Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:This trip has been CONFIRMED!  Chase those winter blues away in sunny Florida\, where the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area needs your help now more than ever! \nThe Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area is the BLM’s most easterly unit of the National Conservation Lands. The main objective of this project is to extend the site’s two trails. The South Trail\, created almost two years ago\, has potential for an extra loop. This section will connect the Natural Area to our office and future interpretive site. The North Trail is a paved ADA concrete path leading to a boardwalk that dead-ends at a pavilion in the mangrove lagoon. We would like to have another trail on the north side of the property going through a different habitat: pine scrub. Both projects would involve clearing vegetation for a 64in trail. The total length of the combined new trails would be less than 2 miles.

SUMMARY:Moab- Colorado Riverway Recreation Area
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will assist in the maintenance of two of the most popular hiking trails in the BLM system — Fisher Towers (a National Recreation Trail) and Grandstaff Canyon (which is within a Wilderness Study Area). Trail work will include rerouting a section of the Grandstaff trail which has been flooded\, as well as reinforcing cribbing on both trails. The trails are located along Utah Highway 128\, a State Scenic Byway\, and within the Colorado Riverway Recreation Area. Camping will be at a BLM group site located along Highway 128. \nMeet the Crew Leader for this trip.

SUMMARY:Coalinga Mineral Springs National Recreation Trail
DESCRIPTION:Coalinga Mineral Springs National Recreation Trail was in a burn area from the Mineral Fire in 2016. The fire caused some destabilization to the slopes and subsequently damaged some sections of the trail. The trail needs repairs to several slide areas and tread work over the length of the trail. The trail work will involve use of Pulaski’s\, McLeod’s\, shovels and loppers. It is approximately a 2 3/4 mile hike to the summit of Kreyenhagen peak\, which has outstanding views of the surrounding foothills and on a clear day views of the Sierras to the East. \nThe Crew Leader position for this trip is still OPEN.  Learn more about becoming a Crew Leader with American Hiking Society.
