SUMMARY:Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge\, TX - Volunteer Vacations 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join this project and help maintain access to a trail system that winds through bayous\, oxbow lakes\, privet swamps\, and cypress-tupelo swamps! Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge is home to 22 actively-managed trails. They are styled as primitive trails to give the visitors ‘a walk in the woods’ type of experience. Paseo de los Patos Trailhead\, located at the scenic Champion Lake Public Use area\, is home to our newest 2 miles of trails where an interpretive Scat Exhibit can be found along the trails. The Knobby Knees Trailhead located at the edge of Liberty Municipal park is the gateway to 9 miles of rustic trails\, including shoreline vistas of the Trinity River. Finally the Great’s Egret’s Ridge Trailhead\, 7 miles of trails\, leads to mysterious oxbows and meandering bayous. \nVolunteers will support maintenance needs including removing fallen vegetation and limbs from the trails and trimming vegetation that has grown into the trails. Volunteers will also work on restoring tree paint and adding new signage where trail markers have faded or degraded over time. The host staff will provide a worksite vehicle so volunteers can drive the paved roads to the worksite. Longest driving distance will be 20 miles. \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. All you need is a willing attitude and to be in good physical condition to participate in moderate physical activity for approximately 6-8 hours a day with plenty of breaks\, at your own pace. Find out more about what it’s like to join a Volunteer Vacation and other frequently asked questions here. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Ishak (Atakapa) and Akokisa peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, their deep and sacred connection to these lands\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. We offer this land acknowledgement as the first of many steps to stand as an ally and amplify Indigenous voices. We invite the American Hiking Society community to join us through continued efforts to support Indigenous communities and learn more about the history of the lands on which we live\, work and recreate.

SUMMARY:Savannah National Wildlife Refuge\, SC - 2023 Volunteer Vacations
DESCRIPTION:Join Savannah National Wildlife Refuge for a chance to be immersed in nature while working to restore access and reopen the refuge’s Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive after an extensive renovation project! The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge\, established April 6\, 1927\, consists of 31\,551 acres of freshwater marshes\, tidal rivers and creeks\, and bottomland hardwoods. About half the refuge is bottomland\, composed primarily of cypress\, gum\, and maple species. The chain of national wildlife refuges that forms the Savannah Coastal Refuges Complex extends from Pinckney Island NWR near Hilton Head Island\, South Carolina\, to Wolf Island NWR near Darien\, Georgia. \nFor this project\, volunteers will work on the restoration of the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive and hiking trails on the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. The Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive and associated trails\, as well as the Little Back River Trail and Tupelo Trail\, are closed due to an ongoing impoundment renovation project. This important habitat project is currently on-schedule to be completed by Spring 2023\, and they need the help from volunteers like yourself! After being closed to the public for almost 2 years\, the refuge is planning for a grand reopening. The volunteers will spend the week outside trimming trails\, replacing trail signs\, and bringing the refuge back to life. The project will be supervised by an experienced refuge staff and USFWS Volunteers\, and all required tools and equipment will be provided. Work will include hauling\, trimming\, lifting\, and other outdoor trail maintenance activities. \nVolunteers will drive from accommodations to the daily project work sites via the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive\, a one-way 4.5 mile driving loop through the managed portion of the Refuge named for one of the rice plantations that once existed on the site. The drive is well-maintained gravel easily navigated. There are trails that finger off the main drive that vary in length that will be apart of this projection completion. Volunteers will need to be able to hike at least 1 mile on their own in a hot and humid environment. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Mvskoke (Muscogee)\, Yamasee and Guale peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, their deep and sacred connection to these lands\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. SUMMARY:Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge\, Wisconsin - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge is located in northern Wisconsin on the shore of Lake Superior. The refuge was established in 1999 in an effort to restore coaster brook trout\, a native trout that spawns in Whittlesey Creek and spends its adult life in Lake Superior. The Coaster Classroom Trail will be a new trail that winds its way up the small hillside near the coaster classroom interpretive center\, down through a small cattail wetland\, across a bridge over a stream\, and run adjacent to the clear waters of Whittlesey Creek. Volunteers will help prep the surface of the trail and unload rock over the trail bed. They will also construct a boardwalk over the wetland and a bridge that spans Little Whittlesey Creek. Total trail length will be 1/2 mile. A subsequent project will consist of maintenance of the boardwalk and gravel trail near the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. Volunteers will replace damaged boards and posts and groom the trail surface with rock. The trail is 1/2 mile long. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ and Anishinabewaki ᐊᓂᔑᓈᐯᐗᑭ peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. AHS invites all volunteers to join us in our commitment to support and amplify the work of Indigenous communities as they work to dismantle the systems of oppression that these communities continue to face today.

SUMMARY:Leadville National Fish Hatchery\, Colorado - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Leadville National Fish Hatchery (NFH)\, established in 1889\, is the second oldest Federally operated fish hatchery in existence today. American Hiking Society volunteers will work on several trail projects at the Leadville National Fish Hatchery. One project is to create 3/4 mile of new trail which would create a 2 mile loop between the Kearney Park Trail and the nature trail. The trail follows some old logging/mining roads and game trails. Volunteers will conduct handwork and some dry stacking of rocks for trail support\, but primarily it would be light trail clearing and delineation. If time allows\, volunteers will rehab/cleanup the ~5 miles of trails already existent on the facility. Most of the trails are already in decent shape\, but there are sections where dirt landing steps could be rebuilt\, delineation of trail\, and clearing of ankle twister rocks. There are also a few low bridges on the existing trail that will need to be repaired and rehabilitated. Please note that although the project itself does not involve strenuous tasks\, the project location is at over 10\,000 feet of altitude which makes physical activity significantly more strenuous. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Núu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute) peoples past and present.

SUMMARY:Kenai National Wildlife Refuge\, Alaska - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge\, often called “Alaska in miniature”\, is home to a wide diversity of wildlife including moose\, eagles\, brown and black bears\, lynx\, wolves and trumpeter swans. Biodiversity is unusually high for this latitude because of the juxtaposition of two biomes on the Kenai Peninsula:  the northern fringe of the Sitka spruce-dominated (Picea sitchensis) coastal rainforest on the eastern flank of the Kenai Mountains\, and the western-most reach of boreal forest in North America on the western slope of the Kenai Mountains.  Elevations range from 6\,600 feet (Mt. Truuli) to sea level where the refuge extends to Chickaloon Flats in Turnagain Arm. \nAmerican Hiking Society Volunteers will work on establishing a connecting trail between Vista Trail and Skilak Lookout Trail. The total distance between the two trails is roughly 2 miles. The crew would be working from the top of Vista Trail clearing new corridor and digging new tread as they begin to start the work towards Skilak Lookout Trail. Vista Trail is 1.5 miles one way hiking to the end of the trail and then starting work from there. With views of Skilak Lake all along the trail it makes for a beautiful hike. Base camp will be established in Upper Skilak Campground where the trail starts out of. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Dënéndeh and Dena’ina Ełnena peoples past and present.

SUMMARY:Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge\, Kansas - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge is one in a system of over 550 refuges administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and dedicated to the preservation and conservation of wildlife. The Refuge is named after the Marais des Cygnes River which runs through the middle of the refuge and is the dominant natural feature of the region. The name\, Marais des Cygnes\, comes from the French language and means Marsh of the Swans. It is presumed that trumpeter swans\, which were historically common in the Midwest\, used the wetlands adjacent to the Marais des Cygnes River during spring and fall migration. \nThe Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge contains 5 trails that are available for public use. The Mosaic Trail resides within the south-eastern portion of the refuge and was originally designed as a loop trail (1.2 miles). Previous management efforts had been made to re-design it; however\, this effort was not completed\, and the trail has been neglected for several years. In the scope of this project\, the crew will work on rehabilitating the trail and re-constructing trail pathway boundaries and bridges. This work may include\, but is not limited to; limbing\, string trimming\, leveling\, hauling and distribution of gravel\, and hammering/drilling. Nearby resides a fishing access area that has suffered extreme erosion and damage. In this access area\, there is a metal staircase that has fallen onto the shoreline and the access route has now become hazardous for visitors and staff. In the scope of this project\, the crew will work to remove these hazardous structures and will reconstruct the trail and a new staircase to allow access to the Marais des Cygnes River for recreational shoreline fishing. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the ?????? ???? ???? ??^??^(Osage)\, Očhéthi Šakówiŋ\, Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo) and Kaskaskia peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. About half the refuge is bottomland\, composed primarily of cypress\, gum\, and maple species. \nVolunteers will work on the Swamp Edge Boardwalk trail to provide visitor access to a cypress swamp adjacent to the Refuge Visitor Center. The boardwalk will be approximately 420 feet long and will be built mostly over water 1 to 1.5 feet deep. The framework will be constructed using pressure treated lumber supported on steel pilings designed to minimize disturbance to the environment. The decking boards will be Brazilian Walnut which was illegally harvested and was confiscated by USFWS Port Inspectors on entry to the United States. The intent of using this lumber in the boardwalk is to provide an educational experience for visitors to emphasize the importance of preserving and protecting our natural resources. The project will be supervised by an experienced USFWS Volunteer\, and all required tools and equipment will be provided. American Hiking Society volunteers should provide waterproof knee boots or hip waders. Work will include hauling\, framing\, and decking material while assisting with helical piling installation and boardwalk construction. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Yamassee and Mvskoke (Muscogee / Creek) peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. SUMMARY:Aransas National Wildlife Refuge\, Texas - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:What is today known as the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge first emerged 120\,000 years ago during the Pleistocene era when a barrier island was born. Today\, this landscape is best known for its prominent place in the American wildlife conservation movement. In 1941\, when only 15 whooping cranes survived in the wild\, the iconic bird became an emblem of alarm and concern for all endangered and threatened species. Aransas became a focal point of the national and worldwide effort to rescue the species from extinction. The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1937 to serve as “a refuge and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife…” and “…for use as an inviolate sanctuary\, or for any other management purpose\, for migratory birds…” The wildlife conservation mission of the National Wildlife Refuge System and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service ensures the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge will continue to conserve\, protect and enhance these lands for the benefit of wildlife and the American people. \nAfter damages sustained from Hurricane Harvey in 2017\, Aransas National Wildlife Refuge has brand new facilities: a new visitor center\, bunkhouse\, volunteer building\, and maintenance yard. The visitor center is the last building to be completed and is slated to be open for the public in winter or spring of 2022. In conjunction with this new visitor center\, we are looking to build a small (0.2 mile) trail that goes around the pond adjacent to our visitor center. The objective of this trail is to encourage visitors to get their first taste of Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. We understand that many of our visitors may feel intimidated by the isolation of our site\, and the wildlife. Or maybe this is their first experience on a wildlife refuge\, or don’t have the capacity to endure a long hike? Regardless\, we want this trail to be an easy\, accessible\, and beautiful trail that is always within sight of our visitor center. We want people to feel able\, confident and acclimated\, so they wish to explore further into the refuge! \nThe project will be to create a 0.2 mile trail around the pond. The terrain is flat\, and we wish for it to be finely graveled for accessibility. Our maintenance workers can plow a path with heavy equipment\, as well as stage piles of gravel. However\, we are in need of volunteers to help spread fabric under trail base (for weed prevention)\, spreading and compacting gravel\, removal of weeds in the pollinator garden; sections of the trail\, and possibly planting sapling and flowers in the pollinator garden areas. Volunteers may also assist with woody overgrowth removal on our Dagger Point trail\, as well as our Big Tree Trail. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Karankawa\, Esto’k Gna (Carrizo/Comecrudo)\, and Coahuiltecan peoples past and present. \n

SUMMARY:Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge is situated in a bottomland hardwood forest. Volunteers will be working on trail maintenance on the Knobby Knees and Great Egret Ridge Trails. These trails offer scenic views of symphonies of knobby knees peeking through the silent\, still waters of the backwood swamps\, Spanish moss hanging overhead in the bald cypress trees\, and\, if one is quiet enough\, alligators and other fauna peering back from the waters below Palmer Bayou Boardwalk. While the trails in the project areas total 16 miles\, this particular Volunteer Vacation will involve approximately 7 miles\, in total\, with no more than 3 miles of hiking per day. Tasks include removing fallen vegetation and limbs from the trail and trimming vegetation that could scratch or pose other inconveniences to hikers. Additional tasks may include cleaning kiosks and starting construction on an additional 3 miles of new trail. Trail construction consists of building a trail 5-8 feet wide where limb and vegetation removal will be the main focus. The project area is relatively flat. Very easy hiking.

SUMMARY:Savannah National Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:Tupelo Trail\, a 3.3 mile trail at Savannah NWR in Hardeeville\, SC\, was damaged during Hurricane Irma. Combined with damage from Hurricane Matthew in 2016\, the trail has been under repair for over a year. While trees have been cleared\, and most of the trail marked\, staff needs assistance with building and installing simple bridges over areas of water\, and improving or extending existing boardwalks and trails. Work will include clearly delineating the path through the woods\, marking trails (paint blazes)\, building or improving 3 water crossings\, and clearing brush. Goals are to complete accurate marking and delineation of the trail and improve year-round end-to-end access for hikers and hunters. Housing is provided at a USFWS bunkhouse\, and transportation can be arranged to and from the local airport\, as well as to and from the work site(s). Work will be with hand tools (shovels\, rakes\, hand saws\, brush loppers\, sledge hammer\, e.g.)\, and some power tools (power drill\, brush cutter\, weed whip\, e.g.). All use of tools and vehicles must follow USFWS guidance\, with project tools best suited for participants over the age of 18. Safety equipment and orientation will be provided. Savannah NWR is one of over 560 national wildlife refuges located throughout the United States. The 31\,551-acre refuge is home to large concentrations of wading birds and wintering ducks\, bald eagles\, neo-tropical migratory songbirds\, and American alligators. Refuge headquarters and trail work location are located just miles from historic downtown Savannah\, GA. \nMeet the Crew Leader for this trip.
