SUMMARY:Special Weekend Trip! Mammoth Cave National Park\, KY - Volunteer Vacation 2024
DESCRIPTION:Join this project to support backcountry trail maintenance in Mammoth Cave National Park\, and explore the longest known cave system in the world!  \nMammoth Cave National Park is a park on two levels – 52\,830 acres of reclaimed hardwood forest and winding riverways\, and below it\, the longest known cave system in the world\, surveyed at 426 miles to date. Located within a day’s drive of major population centers\, it offers camping\, hiking\, horseback riding\, bicycling\, canoeing\, picnicking\, and cave tours. Mammoth Cave was established as a national park in 1941\, later designated a World Heritage Site in 1981\, and an International Biosphere Reserve in 1990. The Biosphere Reserve area was increased from 112\,830 acres to 909\,328 in 1996. In 2021 the park was certified as a Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association. The purpose of Mammoth Cave National Park is to preserve\, protect\, interpret\, and study the internationally recognized biological and geologic features and processes associated with the longest known cave system in the world\, the park’s diverse forested\, karst landscape\, the Green and Nolin rivers\, and extensive evidence of human history; and to provide and promote public enjoyment\, recreation\, and understanding. \nVolunteers will drive back and forth in their personal vehicles on paved roadway from the Maple Springs Housing Facility to the trailhead daily. Distance from housing to the trailhead will vary depending on the amount of work done the previous day. Maple Springs Trailhead is less than a 1 mile drive and the Lincoln Trailhead is about a 6.5 miles drive. Once work has reached the midpoint of the trail\, volunteers will park at the opposite end of the trail and hike in to commence work at the midpoint and hike back out to the vehicles daily.  \nVolunteers who are experienced paddlers will also have the opportunity to participate in the river clean up. The park hosts an annual river cleanup for the 9/11 National Day of Service. This annual river cleanup will occur on 9/14. The Friends of Mammoth Cave will coordinate with local liveries to provide canoes and/or kayaks\, paddles\, and life vests for the group to participate in the paddling event. River levels are typically low and have very little current requiring the volunteer to be able to paddle the 12-15 miles with their gear and any accumulated litter picked up. Several sections on the river may cause the paddler to have to get out of their canoe or kayak to drag across the gravel riverbed. The park will coordinate with the Friends of Mammoth Cave canoes/kayaks\, paddles\, life vests\, and shuttle service to and from the launch sites for the river cleanup for those interested. \nDuring this trip\, Mammoth Cave National Park’s average high temperature is 79°\, and average low temperature is 61°. \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. All you need is a willing attitude and to be in good physical condition to participate in moderate physical activity for approximately 6-8 hours a day with plenty of breaks\, at your own pace. Find out more about what it’s like to join a Volunteer Vacation and other frequently asked questions here. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the ᏣᎳᎫᏪᏘᏱ Tsalaguwetiyi (Cherokee\, East)\, S’atsoyaha (Yuchi)\, and Shawandasse Tula (Shawanwaki/Shawnee) peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, their deep and sacred connection to these lands\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. We offer this land acknowledgement as the first of many steps to stand as an ally and amplify Indigenous voices. We invite the American Hiking Society community to join us through continued efforts to support Indigenous communities and learn more about the history of the lands on which we live\, work and recreate.

SUMMARY:Prince William Forest Park\, VA - Volunteer Vacations 2023
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers are needed to relocate a section of South Valley Trail following sustainable trail building guidelines! New trail will be just over 1 mile in length through the woods over varied terrain. Work will involve hand tools and moderate to heavy manual labor; raking\, digging\, moving small rocks\, forest debris\, clearing vegetation/downfall\, grading trail tread\, and chopping small roots. New trail may or not be roughed-in by that time\, but will at least be pin flagged at minimum. There is 1 footbridge to be constructed. Lumber may be needed to be hiked in to the bridge site. \nVolunteers should be prepared to hike off-trail for short distances over uneven rolling terrain and potential tripping hazards. The trail access is directly off of a gravel fire road where volunteers will park your vehicles. Hiking is no more than 2 miles round-trip over varied terrain. Tools and materials will be hiked in from the road. \nThe trail head is 5 miles away from the cabin campground. 4.5 miles of those miles is on paved road. The last half-mile is on rough gravel road. Transportation will be provided. Volunteers can bring their own vehicles if you prefer. Volunteers will drive 1 – 7 miles per day from their structured housing location to the trailhead and park for the day. They will then meet with park staff for a safety briefing\, collect trail tools/supplies/equipment and then hike 2 – 5 miles per day with their tools\, water\, and lunch to the worksite. Volunteers will assist park staff with the installation and/or repair of trail features designed to improve water drainage; build/repair trail surfaces to improve trail safety for the public; reduce soil erosion that will protect nearby waterways that drain into the river or cave environment; and relocate sections of downed trees (working with NPS Certified Chainsaw Operator) and remove encroaching vegetation to widen the trail corridor. \nVolunteers will hike from the trailhead to the worksite and back out. Volunteers should expect to hike up to 2-5 miles daily. Volunteers must be able to carry their work tools/equipment (provided by the park) and enough personal food and water for the day. The trail surface on each trail is severely degraded from excessive traffic. Volunteers must be capable of navigating through uneven terrain where downed trees (will be cut and sections relocated) may be present across the trails. Volunteers will be exposed to unearthed rocks\, mud\, encroaching vegetation (thorned brush/shrubs\, tree limbs\, and poison ivy)\, prominent tick population\, venomous snakes\, and stinging insects. \nVolunteers will drive back and forth on paved roadway from the Maple Springs Housing Facility to the trailhead daily. Maple Springs Trailhead (0.7 miles from housing) or Lincoln Trailhead (~6.5 miles from housing) to park and meet the project supervisor. Distance from housing to the trailhead will vary depending on the amount of work done the previous day. Once work has reached the midpoint of the trail\, volunteers will park at the opposite end of the trail and hike in to commence work at the midpoint and hike back out to the vehicles daily. \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. There are four bridges in the Jakes Place (Historic) landscape which were built several years ago\, and they are in need of being removed and built. Jakes’s Place is off the Twin Arches Trail but also connects to the Charit Creek Lodge (Historic). Volunteers will be replacing one of these bridges during the week of service. There are no buildings left standing at Jakes Place other than the remnants of an old fireplace. Volunteers will be driven to the trailhead but will have to hike approximately 1-2 miles to the actual work site. The terrain is steep and moderate in difficulty for hiking. \nWith the beginning of summer\, the area is abundant with wildlife\, wildflowers\, birds and lush green trees. It is an area for foot traffic only and it is truly a peaceful area to visit\, even if only for one day. In the evenings\, star gazers can look up and see a beautiful display of stars. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Tsalaguwetiyi (Cherokee\, East)\, S’atsoyaha (Yuchi)\, and Shawandasse Tula (Shawanwaki/Shawnee) peoples past and present.

SUMMARY:Camp Nelson National Monument\, KY - Volunteer Vacations 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join this project to support trail access at Camp Nelson National Monument\, a location steeped in African American and Civil War history. Initially established as a Federal army supply depot and hospital\, Camp Nelson was one of the largest recruitment and training centers for African American soldiers during the Civil War\, and served as a refugee camp for their wives and children. Thousands of enslaved African Americans risked their lives escaping to the camp\, located within the slaveholding state of Kentucky\, with the hope of securing their freedom and\, ultimately\, controlling their futures by contributing to the abolition of slavery. Camp Nelson represents the courage and determination of formerly enslaved African Americans to secure their own emancipation. It also illustrates the nation’s struggle to define the meaning of freedom during and after the Civil War. \nOver five miles of hiking trails allow visitors to experience first-hand the rolling pastoral landscape of Camp Nelson National Monument. This trail system and numerous interpretive markers provide an opportunity to explore earthworks and fortifications that protected Camp Nelson and allow visitors to walk in the footsteps of soldiers in order to gain an understanding of the sites’ significant role during the Civil War. \nDuring the week\, the American Hiking Society volunteer crew will work on upgrading the wooded Fort Jones Trail that takes hikers through the woods to Fort Jones and the two Stone Forts. Fort Jones\, with its extensive stone revetment walls\, is one of the best-preserved Civil War forts in the state. The Stone Fort Overlook affords a breathtaking view of the Hickman Creek Valley and the Hickman Creek Nature and Conference Center. These trails provide opportunities for viewing a beautiful central Kentucky landscape and stretching your legs\, while learning about various sites that made up the busy and complex Camp Nelson supply depot. \nVolunteers will work to remove invasive vegetation along the Fort Jones Overlook Trail. This trail has been taken over by multiflora rose and bush honeysuckle. Volunteers will use provided loppers and herbicide to remove these invasive plants 15 feet off of the trail corridor enabling native vegetation to re-populate the area. Volunteers should be prepared to hike up to 3/4 of a mile through relatively flat terrain. All tools and day hiking gear including volunteer’s backpacks can be hauled to the project location by a truck.
