SUMMARY:Mountain Majesty and Nature’s Peace in the Backcountry of the Beautiful Bitterroot National Forest\, MT (Backpacking Trip)
DESCRIPTION:A backpacking adventure with the planning done for you! \nCome enjoy the magnificent mountains\, the serenity of wilderness\, the miracle of spring flowers\, majestic big game\, and the sounds of birds here in the Bitterroot Mountains! Explore nature and support trails in this 1.6 million acre forest on this project near Missoula\, Montana! \nThis project will take place in the heavily glaciated\, rugged Bitterroot Mountains of southwestern Montana. The Bitterroot Valley is one of the most spectacular scenic corridors in Montana. Trails traverse deep canyons and sharp ridges formed by glaciers into the heart of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. \nAmerican Hiking Society volunteers will work with experienced wilderness stewards from the Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation to maintain the Holloway Lake Trail #393. Project work will consist of clearing trails using crosscut saws\, axes\, and handsaws\, brushing back overgrown vegetation\, cleaning drains and water bars\, removing social trails\, and improving the drainage of the trail tread. \nOn the day off in the middle of the week volunteers can choose to swim\, fish\, relax at camp\, or further explore the area on foot. \nWe highly recommend prior backpacking experience to participate on this trip. \nThere is no trail experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. All you need is a willing attitude and to be in good physical condition to participate in moderate physical activity for approximately 6-8 hours a day with plenty of breaks\, at your own pace. SUMMARY:Bitterroot National Forest\, MT - Volunteer Vacation 2024
DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy the magnificent mountains\, the serenity of wilderness\, the miracle of spring flowers\, majestic big game\, and the sounds of birds here in the Bitterroot Mountains! Explore nature and support trails in this 1.6 million acre forest in southwest Montana and Idaho. \nJoin this project in the heavily glaciated\, rugged peaks of the Bitterroot Mountains. Volunteers will work with experienced wilderness stewards from the Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation to clear trails using crosscut saws\, axes\, and handsaws. For a third consecutive year\, this collaborative effort will continue to open the Big Creek Trail #11 from Big Creek Lake to Packbox Pass (at milepost 13.8) on the Montana-Idaho border. This trail threads through a scenic Montana canyon and offers a pristine Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness experience. Secondary tasks may include brushing back overgrown vegetation\, cleaning drains\, and improving the drainage of trail tread. Time permitting\, Volunteers will clear the South Fork Big Creek Trail #118\, a 3-mile trail running along the southern shore of the lake.  \nBig Creek Trail #11 winds about 2.5 miles alongside a shoreline with little elevation change until it begins to climb to Packbox Pass. The climb to the pass is steep with multiple switchbacks\, gaining about 1300 feet over 2 miles. Depending on trail conditions\, including the number of downed trees\, the daily hike to the worksite could range from 0.1 miles to 3 miles. From the trailhead the first 8 miles are moderate\, winding along the well-traveled creek through a forested area and gaining about 1530’ in elevation. The mile-long climb to the lake is fairly steep\, with multiple switchbacks and an elevation gain of about 700’. The last mile to basecamp along the lake has little elevation change but narrow footing in places. \nDuring this trip\, Bitterroot National Forest’s average high temperature is 80°\, and average low temperature is 56°. \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. DESCRIPTION:Join this project in the heavily glaciated\, rugged peaks of the Bitterroot Mountains! Volunteers will be clearing with crosscut saws\, axes\, and handsaws as well as cleaning drains and improving trail tread. The Big Creek Trail #11 threads through a scenic Montana canyon and offers a pristine Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness experience.  \nDuring the first half of the trip\, volunteers will clear the Big Creek trail of fallen trees and overgrown vegetation from Big Creek Lake to Packbox Pass at milepost 13.8\, on the Montana-Idaho border. There will be an optional day off in the middle of the Volunteer Vacation during which volunteers may choose to swim\, hike\, relax at camp\, or bushwhack to help identify and define the route of the historic Big Creek Divide Trail #306. Time permitting\, the crew may spend the latter part of the project clearing the South Fork Big Creek Trail #118\, a 3-mile trail running along the southern shore of the lake. \nVolunteers will camp at one of several campsites that are available\, depending on group size and trail conditions. Volunteers will backpack in 8-9 miles. The trail is fairly flat with easy terrain for the first 7 miles\, with gradual incline. Several footbridges aid with creek crossings. The 1-mile approach to the lake is steep with switchbacks. Total elevation gain about 2400 feet. This trail is well-traveled by outfitters with stock animals and backpackers.  \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. DESCRIPTION:This project will take place in the heavily glaciated\, rugged peaks of the Bitterroot Mountains. Volunteers will be clearing with crosscut saws\, axes\, and handsaws as well as cleaning drains and improving trail tread. The Big Creek Trail #11 threads through a scenic Montana canyon and offers a pristine Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness experience. During the first half of the trip we will clear the Big Creek trail of fallen trees from milepost 9 to Packbox Pass at milepost 13.8. There will be an optional day off in the middle of the week during which volunteers may choose to swim\, hike\, or relax at camp. If there is time\, the latter half of the project will be spent scouting and clearing the Big Creek Divide Trail #306. With wayfinding assistance from the Forest Service\, work will entail bushwhacking\, flagging\, and clearing the switchback trail. The Big Creek Divide Trail is full of history and has not been cleared in several years; be prepared for strenuous work and bring your sense of adventure! \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Salish and Ktunaxa ɁamakɁis peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, and those who continue to steward these lands today.
