SUMMARY:Special Weekend Trip! Touch of Nature Trails\, IL - Volunteer Vacation 2024
DESCRIPTION:Nestled amidst the breathtaking beauty of the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois\, join this project to support trail accessibility at Touch of Nature Environmental Center! \nTouch of Nature Environmental Center hosts experiential education programs that utilize the many natural resources on and around its 3\,400 acres located in beautiful Southern Illinois. These programs offer opportunities for all people and focus on traditional outdoor activities\, environmental education\, and adventure pursuits.  \nVolunteers will work together to establish a half mile connecting trail between two pre-existing trails. The new connecting trail will allow continual public access to the trails while summer camps are in session. By creating this new connection\, hikers will be able to use trails that previously would have been closed due to programming in progress. Volunteers will hike to the project site from their cabin. The hike to the project site is about a half mile on sidewalks\, with about 100 feet of hiking through uneven terrain. \nDuring this trip\, Touch of Nature’s average high temperature is 68°\, and average low temperature is 44°. \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. All you need is a willing attitude and to be in good physical condition to participate in moderate physical activity for approximately 6-8 hours a day with plenty of breaks\, at your own pace. Find out more about what it’s like to join a Volunteer Vacation and other frequently asked questions here. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Osage\, Quapaw\, Myaamia\, Očhéthi Šakówiŋ\, Kaskaskia\, and Kickapoo peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, their deep and sacred connection to these lands\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. We offer this land acknowledgement as the first of many steps to stand as an ally and amplify Indigenous voices. We invite the American Hiking Society community to join us through continued efforts to support Indigenous communities and learn more about the history of the lands on which we live\, work and recreate. \nClick here for a PDF of trip details.

SUMMARY:Touch of Nature Environmental Center\, Illinois - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Touch of Nature Environmental Center hosts experiential education programs that utilize the many natural resources on and around its 3\,400 acres located in beautiful Southern Illinois. These programs offer opportunities for all people and focus on traditional outdoor activities\, environmental education\, and adventure pursuits. Touch of Nature is currently working to create 15 additional miles of trail to the existing trail system in Shawnee National Forest. This project includes maintaining existing trail with actions such as brushing\, clearing water bars\, and retreading eroded surface. The main component of this project\, however\, is helping to clear and bench cut the new sections of trail on Touch of Nature Property. Project days will require 1-3 mile hikes to work sites\, while carrying packs and tools. Potential projects include cutting tread and adding drainage features\, rock gardens\, and established berms. This project will provide a great opportunity for trail building education and experience. All trail building instruction and tools needed will be provided on site through Touch of Nature’s trail staff\, making this an excellent project for first-time volunteers. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the ?????? ???? ???? ??^??^(Osage)\, Očhéthi Šakówiŋ\, O-ga-xpa Ma-zhoⁿ (O-ga-xpa)\, Myaamia\, Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo)\, and Kaskaskia peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. AHS invites all volunteers to join us in our commitment to support and amplify the work of Indigenous communities as they work to dismantle the systems of oppression that these communities continue to face today.

SUMMARY:Shawnee National Forest\, Touch of Nature Environmental Center
DESCRIPTION:The Touch of Nature trails initiative learned from the USFS’s Shawnee Volunteer Corps is rebuilding a new system of trails. The initiative has become an environmental education program of its own through the integration of educational components during work sessions. It also has become a community building project for the center through the many campus and community organizations who volunteer. The trail initiative is an integral part of our annual summer camps and the numerous school groups we bring to Touch of Nature. As a regional resource for connecting people to the land and promoting hiking and paddling for recreation and sustainable healthy living. Work will include but is not limited to clearing trails of organic materials creating new trails or enhancing and developing our programming areas using Pulaskis\, McLeods\, shovels and rakes. Volunteers will work on creating a back-slope\, tread and an out-slope. As well as any other tasks that arise during your stay here. \nThis trip is hosted and crew led by the Touch of Nature Environmental Center.
