SUMMARY:Trinidad Coastal Land Trust\, California - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will work with trail supervisors on the Tepona Point Overlook trail\, located along Scenic Drive on the stunning Trinidad coastline in northern California\, where the redwoods meet the Pacific Ocean. This staircase trail provides public access to viewing the iconic offshore rocks of the California Coastal National Monument\, glimpses of migrating grey whales\, and plentiful seabirds. Although trail distances are only a few 100 yards\, the terrain is very sloped as we will be working along a coastal bluff. Work will include replacing a dilapidated staircase with a stretch of crib steps\, which will consist of demolishing the existing stairs\, removing vegetation\, installing crib steps and a safety railing\, and removing invasive plants. Trail work will include manual lifting of work materials (lumber\, gravel\, and tools)\, trail step construction\, filling in cribs with gravel\, and clearing brush and ivy. The summer weather is moderate and enjoyable. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Resighini Rancheria\, Yurok Tribe\, Trinidad Rancheria\, and Big Lagoon Rancheria peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. AHS invites all volunteers to join us in our commitment to support and amplify the work of Indigenous communities as they work to dismantle the systems of oppression that these communities continue to face today.

SUMMARY:California Coastal National Monument\, Trinidad CA
DESCRIPTION:Trip CANCELLED due to COVID-19: \n  \nVolunteers will work on two public trails to spectacular beaches along the Trinidad coastline in northern California\, where the redwoods meet the Pacific Ocean. These are amazing ocean front public use areas that highlight the California Coastal National Monument’s offshore rocks and islands\, coastal forests\, sand bluffs and shoreline tidepools. We will replace trail steps at the Luffenholtz Beach Park vista point trail. We will also work on trail steps at the nearby Old Home Beach public trail. These trails offer scenic vistas and access to surf fishing and tidepool exploring. Last year’s volunteers loved their experience here. Trail distances are less than one mile from trail head downhill to the beach\, but include moderately difficult hiking on unleveled terrain. Work will include replacement of existing trail steps\, installation of new crib steps\, trail clearing and removal of invasive plants. Trail work will also include manual moving of materials (lumber\, beach boulders\, gravel\, logs)\, trail step construction\, digging trail drainage / water bars\, and clearing brush and ivy. The nearby group campsite is at Patricks Point State Park and includes warm showers and flush-toilet restrooms. Our small ‘city’ of Trinidad is recognized as a CA Coastal National Monument Gateway Community for its scenic vistas and community support of coastal conservation. The nearby city of Arcata\, a college town home to Humboldt State University\, has a downtown plaza and many social events.
