SUMMARY:Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness\, MN - Volunteer Vacations 2023
DESCRIPTION:Get your hiking boots and canoe paddles ready for this backcountry adventure into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness! Join the North Country Trail Association and help conduct much needed maintenance on a remote 5-mile stretch of the Kekekabic / North Country Trail. The million-acre Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) is a stunningly beautiful designated wilderness area located in the northeastern tip of Minnesota. It is a unique landscape that is made up of equal parts water (lakes\, rivers\, and wetlands) and land (boreal forest). While canoeing is the dominant use of the Wilderness\, there are 200 miles of hiking trails within the BWCAW including the Kekekabic and Border Route Trails – two components of the North Country National Scenic Trail. The Kekekabic Trail (Kek) was damaged by the historic 1999 windstorm but the forest has regenerated along with thick brush and young trees. The job of the crew will be to keep open a corridor through the forest and brush for hikers to follow. The crew will be working between Thomas and Strup Lakes and camping on/near Thomas Lake. This Kek section features large wetlands\, small lakes\, rocky knobs\, and young mixed coniferous-hardwood forests. Canoeing on a BWCAW lake\, fishing\, or hiking may be enjoyed right from the group campsite. \nVolunteers will canoe to set up a base camp on/near Thomas Pond within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness\, canoeing a distance of approximately 11.5 miles. There is a distance of approximately 1.1 miles of portage trails included in this total. Following that\, the crew will perform basic maintenance on a remote 5-mile stretch of the Kekekabic / North Country Trail. The work will entail using hand tools (Silky saws\, crosscut saw\, loppers\, and hedge trimmers) to maintain an open trail corridor. Volunteers should expect to hike up to 10 miles round trip per day with minimal elevation gain over rough\, primitive trail tread. \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. All you need is a willing attitude and to be in good physical condition to participate in moderate physical activity for approximately 6-8 hours a day with plenty of breaks\, at your own pace. Find out more about what it’s like to join a Volunteer Vacation and other frequently asked questions here. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Anishinabewaki and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, their deep and sacred connection to these lands\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. We offer this land acknowledgement as the first of many steps to stand as an ally and amplify Indigenous voices. We invite the American Hiking Society community to join us through continued efforts to support Indigenous communities and learn more about the history of the lands on which we live\, work and recreate.

SUMMARY:Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness - Volunteer Vacations 2021
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will help maintain sections of the Border Route Trail / North Country National Scenic Trail (BRT for short) that are in need of basic maintenance work. This entails using hand tools to remove blowdowns and clear brush from the trail corridor. We will be working on about a roughly 5-mile stretch of the BRT within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the worksite will be remote. The most difficult tasks will be 1) portaging on the way in/out and 2) doing the clearing work. Portaging is the act of carrying all your personal gear\, some of the group gear\, plus the canoes and tools over rough trails in between the lakes. This trip will entail 1 portage on the way in / out and maybe one additional portage during the daily work. \nCURRENT COVID TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE (Link)

SUMMARY:Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE WE ARE RESCHEDULING THIS TRIP DUE TO COVID-19. STAY TUNED FOR THE NEW DATES: \nVolunteers will clear blowdowns and brush along the wilderness section of the Border Route Trail (BRT) within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northeastern Minnesota’s Superior National Forest. The BRT is a remote\, 65 mile footpath and part of the North Country National Scenic Trail which spans 4\,600 miles from North Dakota to Vermont. The wilderness section covers 36 mile through the BWCA and is maintained by using hand saws and loppers to clear the 4′ x 8′ corridor as power tools are not allowed inside the BWCA. The plan is to paddle in with canoes to a base camp inside the BWCA and do daily clearing\, returning to base camp each evening. However\, we need a plan B in case the ice hasn’t gone out of the lakes\, preventing water travel. Unlikely\, but it is possible. So\, we are going to plan for a backpack in to base camp\, and do daily clearing and returning to base camp every evening. This means we will travel lighter\, carrying backpacking meals and cooking equipment. If the ice is gone\, we will paddle in with canoes. Our goal is to clear 5 or 6 miles of the trail.

SUMMARY:Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness\, Superior National Forest
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will help maintain sections of the “Kek” that are in dire need of basic maintenance work because of prior windstorms that severely damaged the trail. This entails using hand tools to remove blowdowns and clear brush from the trail corridor. We will be working on the easternmost 15 miles of the “Kek” within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the worksite will be very remote. The most difficult tasks will be 1) portaging 9 times on the way in/out and 2) doing the clearing work. Portaging is the act of carrying all your personal gear\, some of the group gear\, plus the canoes and tools over rough trails in between the lakes. This is often very difficult for folks unused to carrying heavy loads over uneven terrain.

SUMMARY:Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will tackle clearing blowdowns and brush along a remote section of the Kekekabic Trail within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northeastern Minnesota’s Superior National Forest. This trail is a vital link in the North Country National Scenic Trail which spans 4\,600 miles from ND to NY. The work will entail using hand saws and loppers to clear the 4′ x 8′ corridor. We will split into two separate crews before going in based upon crew members’ preferences. One crew will canoe into the Kek’s eastern third (half to three quarters of a day’s paddle in)\, basecamp\, and commute via canoe to the work area each day. The other crew will canoe into the heart of the BWCAW (a full day’s paddle in)\, basecamp\, and commute via canoe to the work area each day. \nThis trip is hosted and crew led by the North Country Trail Association.
