SUMMARY:Breathtaking Ruggedness\, Big Timber and Wilderness Camping in the Beautiful Sierra-Nevada\, CA (Backpacking)
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Sierra-Nevada Wilderness like never before! Located between Lake Tahoe and Sacramento\, Mokelumne Wilderness is a rugged landscape of great scenic beauty. \nVolunteers will help repair the avalanche damaged Camp Irene Trail in a high elevation glacial canyon! During a heavy winter a large avalanche severely damaged a 1/2 mile section of this trail making it extremely difficult for visitors to navigate. This project will be vital for restoring and re-routing the damaged trail and will involve rock work\, cross cut saws and tread building. \nIn your free time\, there is a trout filled stream nearby as well as access to beautiful lakes and peaks. It is a very scenic area in the heart of the Mokelumne Wilderness. \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. All you need is a willing attitude and to be in good physical condition to participate in moderate physical activity for approximately 6-8 hours a day with plenty of breaks\, at your own pace. Additional trip discount not available for this special rate. \nJoin this project to backpack into a stunning river valley of granite and pine trees and help restore access along this popular canyon trail. The Mokelumne River Canyon has been described as a smaller version of the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River in Yosemite National Park\, with sections of the canyon up to a mile deep. \nThis project will take place deep in the Mokelumne Wilderness. Due to its remote location the trail system surrounding Munson Meadow has fallen into a state of disrepair and is in need of significant cross-cut work. This project will involve a base camp at the Munson Meadow Trailhead which will require volunteers to hike to the location as very high clearance 4×4 would be needed to get there by vehicle. The work will involve tree removal and treadwork on the Munson Meadow Trail and the surrounding trails to Cole Creek\, Long and Black Rock Lakes. The hike to the base camp is a challenging 7.5 mile hike with around 1\,400 feet of elevation gain. Hikes to the project site will vary from 1 to 3 miles. \nDuring this trip\, Eldorado National Forest’s average high temperature is 91°\, and average low temperature is 67°. \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. All you need is a willing attitude and to be in good physical condition to participate in moderate physical activity for approximately 6-8 hours a day with plenty of breaks\, at your own pace. The Mokelumne River Canyon has been described as a smaller version of the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River in Yosemite National Park. Sections of the canyon are up to a mile deep. Granite is predominate and the Munson Meadow trail is in some places a trail engineering marvel. The Munson Meadow trail is 9.5 miles long and is in need of trail maintenance. The trail was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The trail is relatively flat for 6 miles as it passes Long Lake at mile 4 where the first campsite is. After mile 6\, the trail drops steeply into the Mokelumne River Canyon. At mile 7.5 is the second camp\, which has incredible views overlooking the canyon. There are trail maintenance needs above and below both camps with the majority of the work needed at the second camp. Volunteers will support this work through brushing\, crosscut saw work\, and tread repair.  \nVolunteers will backpack and camp near the project worksite\, moving camp halfway through the trip. The first camp is four miles in with an elevation loss of 700′. The second camp is 3 miles further with an additional elevation gain & loss of 1600′. Daily hiking to work sites from the camping location will vary from less than a mile with an elevation gain/loss of 550 vertical feet near the 2nd camp site on up to 3 miles with an elevation gain/loss of 150 vertical feet near the first campsite. Volunteers will need to carry their personal gear and a portion of the food/tools/cooking gear to base camp. \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. All you need is a willing attitude and to be in good physical condition to participate in moderate physical activity for approximately 6-8 hours a day with plenty of breaks\, at your own pace. SUMMARY:Eldorado National Forest
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will spend the week working on trails and campsites around the 4th of July lake.  Volunteers will be falling hazardous trees and installing sign posts at the designated campsites. Spur trails to the new campsites will  be established and decommissioned campsites will be restored. Volunteers will also do brushing and tread work on the Tahoe Yosemite trail. This will include installing water bars and checks. Trail reroutes may be necessary. Tools being used will include shovels\, post hole diggers\, pulaskis\, mclouds\, mattix\, crosscut saw\, axes\, wedges\, pruning shears\, GPS units\, inclinometers\, tape measures\, hand saws\, and a rock bar. The goal is to redistribute the designated camping sites at 4th of July Lake to better the wilderness experience at the lake. Another goal is to mitigate the effects of water eroding the trail and clearing the brush back from the sides of the trail to enhance the hiking experience on the trail. \nMeet the Crew Leader for this trip.
