SUMMARY:(All Women+ Crew) Support Hurricane Recovery at Hungry Mother State Park\, VA (Weekend Trip)
DESCRIPTION:Virginia Treasure Needs Your Support Following Hurricane! This project is open to anyone who feels that an all- women’s trip that centers and celebrates the experience of women is the right space for them. \nVisit one of the original six Virginia State Parks! Hungry Mother State Park is known for beautiful woodlands and a placid 108-acre lake in the heart of the mountains. This state park suffered extensive damage during the 2024 hurricane season. \nFor this project\, volunteers will continue trail work on the Raiders Run Reroute\, which American Hiking Society crews have worked on for the last two years. The trails have been bench cut (trail steps) on moderately steep slopes but will be improved for sustainability with water diversion features. Volunteers will improve trails by maintaining\, shaping\, and defining existing hiking and mountain bike features including berms\, rollers\, and trail tread formations on these trails along with other necessary features. Most of the work will be spent bending\, shoveling\, raking\, chopping\, and tamping. \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. All you need is a willing attitude and to be in good physical condition to participate in moderate physical activity for approximately 6-8 hours a day with plenty of breaks\, at your own pace. Find out more about what it’s like to join a Volunteer Vacation and other frequently asked questions here.

SUMMARY:Hungry Mother State Park\, VA - Volunteer Vacation 2024
DESCRIPTION:Visit one of the original six Virginia State Parks! Hungry Mother State Park  is known for beautiful woodlands and a placid 108-acre lake in the heart of the mountains. \nFor this project\, volunteers will  continue trail work on the Raiders Run Reroute\, which American Hiking Society crews have worked on for the last two years. The trails have been bench cut on moderately steep slopes but will be improved for sustainability with water diversion features including sheet flow on the tread and out-slope and grade reversals. Volunteers may drive or carpool from the Bunkhouse to the trailhead. There will be less than a mile hike to the worksite from the trailhead. The hike is on an unfinished trail which may be uneven. The distance hiked may vary each day with varying ranges in elevation. \nDuring this trip\, Hungry Mother State Park’s average high temperature is 78°\, and average low temperature is 58°. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the ᏣᎳᎫᏪᏘᏱ Tsalaguwetiyi (Cherokee\, East)\, and S’atsoyaha (Yuchi) peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, their deep and sacred connection to these lands\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. We offer this land acknowledgement as the first of many steps to stand as an ally and amplify Indigenous voices. We invite the American Hiking Society community to join us through continued efforts to support Indigenous communities and learn more about the history of the lands on which we live\, work and recreate. \nClick here for a PDF of trip details.

SUMMARY:Hungry Mother State Park\, Virginia - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Hungry Mother\, one of the original six Virginia State Parks\, has long been a favorite. It’s known for beautiful woodlands and a placid 108-acre lake in the heart of the mountains. The park has a sandy beach with a bathhouse\, boat rentals (canoe\, kayak\, paddle boats and paddleboards)\, a boat launch and a universally accessible fishing pier. Guests also enjoy campgrounds\, cabins\, yurts\, gift shops\, a visitor center\, a six-bedroom family lodge\, and hiking and biking trails. Raider’s Run Trail was historically used as a horseback riding trail and has been turned into a hiking/biking trail. Various sections of the trail need to be re-routed to make it more user friendly and sustainable. New trail will be built with a bench cut on moderately to steep slopes but will be laid out sustainably with water diversion features including sheet flow on the tread and out-slope and grade reversals. Most of the work will be spent bending\, shoveling\, picking\, chopping\, and/or sawing. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the ᏣᎳᎫᏪᏘᏱ Tsalaguwetiyi (Cherokee\, East) and S’atsoyaha (Yuchi) peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. AHS invites all volunteers to join us in our commitment to support and amplify the work of Indigenous communities as they work to dismantle the systems of oppression that these communities continue to face today.

SUMMARY:Hungry Mother State Park
DESCRIPTION:TRIP CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19: \n  \nSince implementing the Trail Master Plan we have provided rehabilitation\, re-routes\, and new trail construction to bring our current trail inventory up to standards. It is crucial to provide sustainable trails and recreation areas to meet an increase demand for hiking trails. We will address current needs to make various trails more sustainable by installing rock armoring in areas that currently have drainage issues\, knicks\, rolling grade dips\, and corridor clearing\, out slope and de-berming. In addition to this we will also address areas of trail that need grooming by raking and removing small rocks\, leaves\, and leaf litter on the trail tread.

SUMMARY:Hungry Mother State Park
DESCRIPTION:We will be hand building a section of new trail which will eventually wind its way over and meet up with Clyburn Ridge Loop Trail. The trail will be laid out on an old road bed and then will meander through a steeply forested area along ridges and sideslopes. All work will be done by hand\, no mechanized labor will be used. Depending on length of trail laid\, there will be a possibility of crew assisting with laying out and designing additional trail. All trail laid will include removing duff layer\, angling trail correctly along with side slope installed correctly\, installing knicks\, rolling grade dips\, and grade reversals\, armoring of creeks\, and installing other sustainable trail features.
