SUMMARY:Backpacker's Dream on Northern CA Coast
DESCRIPTION:Discover the rugged beauty of California’s Lost Coast while making a meaningful impact on the land. This Volunteer Vacation blends a multi-day backpacking trip with hands-on trail restoration work along the remote and scenic Rattlesnake Ridge Trail. \nAfter an overnight stay at the King Range Visitor Center\, you’ll hike 4.5 miles to your beachside basecamp at Big Flat\, nestled between the ocean and forested ridgelines. From Tuesday through Thursday\, you’ll cross creeks and traverse 2 miles daily to the worksite\, where you’ll use hand tools like McLeods\, Pulaskis\, and loppers to clear brush and repair trail tread. Your efforts will improve access and safety along this challenging but rewarding stretch of trail. \nExpect varied terrain—from hard-packed paths to soft sand and rocky sections that require balance. This trip is ideal for backpackers ready for adventure and physical work in a breathtaking setting. \nYour final day’s hike will depend on ocean conditions. If tides allow\, you’ll trek 8 miles south over boulder fields and open beaches. If not\, a more stable 4.5-mile route to the north will lead you back to the trailhead. Either way\, you’ll experience unforgettable views and the satisfaction of leaving the trail better than you found it. \nWith logistics handled by experienced leaders\, all you need to do is bring your gear\, your grit\, and your love for the outdoors. \nWe highly recommend prior backpacking experience to participate on this trip. \nThere is no trail experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. All you need is a willing attitude and to be in good physical condition to participate in moderate physical activity for approximately 6-8 hours a day with plenty of breaks\, at your own pace.
