SUMMARY:Tonto National Forest - Volunteer Vacations 2021
DESCRIPTION:In 2020 more than 125 miles of the Arizona National Scenic Trail was impacted by wildfire. The largest of the fires to impact the trail was the Bush Fire in central Arizona which consumed more than 190\,000 acres and closed 40 miles of the AZT through the Four Peaks and Pine Mountain. As initial assessments have been completed it is clear that the recovery from the fire will be long and will require a massive effort from volunteers and paid crews alike to open the trail and keep it safe for users. The need is critical and the work will help us keep a piece of beloved trail from fading back into the wild. Our efforts will concentrate on the area between El Oso Road and Boulder Creek\, stabilizing creek crossings\, repairing switchbacks and clearing any deadfall that has blocked the trail. There’s little brush left\, so the majority of the work will be digging and tread rehabilitation. SUMMARY:Tonto National Forest - Arizona National Scenic Trail
DESCRIPTION:TRIP CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19: \n  \nThe Arizona National Scenic trail travels 800 miles across the state of Arizona between the Mexican border and Utah. It highlights the diversity of wild landscapes in Arizona from the iconic Sonoran desert to deep ponderosa forests. This project is located in the rugged and mysterious Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix and involves building approximately 1 mile of new trail to bypass a tricky road near the head of Cottonwood Canyon. This area was burned in the 2019 Woodbury fire\, but regrowth is coming back fast. Working on gently sloping terrain in rocky soils\, we’ll need to brush a corridor\, clear the tread and build some rock maintenance structures. We’ll be using standard digging tools such as picks\, shovels\, and McCleods as well as some lopping and sawing. Our camp will be close to the work site\, but each time we build more trail\, we’ll walk farther to access it.
