SUMMARY:Trinity River National Wildlife\, TX - Volunteer Vacation 2024
DESCRIPTION:Join this project and help maintain access to a trail system that winds through bayous\, oxbow lakes\, privet swamps\, and cypress-tupelo swamps! Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge is home to 22 actively-managed trails. They are styled as primitive trails to give the visitors ‘a walk in the woods’ type of experience. Paseo de los Patos Trailhead\, located at the scenic Champion Lake Public Use area\, is home to our newest 2 miles of trails where an interpretive Scat Exhibit can be found along the trails. The Knobby Knees Trailhead located at the edge of Liberty Municipal park is the gateway to 9 miles of rustic trails\, including shoreline vistas of the Trinity River. Finally the Great’s Egret’s Ridge Trailhead\, 7 miles of trails\, leads to mysterious oxbows and meandering bayous.  \nVolunteers will focus on work on Knobby Knees Trail and Great Egret Ridge Trail. The refuge will provide a truck for official use to drive between the worksite\, office\, and housing. Longest driving distance will be 22 miles. \nDuring this trip\, Trinity River National Wildlife’s average high temperature is 73°\, and average low temperature is 51°. \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. All you need is a willing attitude and to be in good physical condition to participate in moderate physical activity for approximately 6-8 hours a day with plenty of breaks\, at your own pace. Volunteers will also work on restoring tree paint and adding new signage where trail markers have faded or degraded over time. The host staff will provide a worksite vehicle so volunteers can drive the paved roads to the worksite. Longest driving distance will be 20 miles. \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. SUMMARY:Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:TRIP CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19: \n  \nTrinity River National Wildlife Refuge is situated in a bottomland hardwood forest. Volunteers will be working on trail maintenance on the Knobby Knees and Great Egret Ridge Trails. These trails offer scenic views of symphonies of knobby knees peeking through the silent\, still waters of the backwood swamps\, Spanish moss hanging overhead in the bald cypress trees\, and\, if one is quiet enough\, alligators and other fauna peering back from the waters below Palmer Bayou Boardwalk. While the trails in the project areas total 16 miles\, this particular Volunteer Vacation will involve approximately 12 miles\, in total\, with no more than 5 miles of hiking per day. Tasks include removing fallen vegetation and limbs from the trail and trimming vegetation that could scratch or pose other inconveniences to hikers. Additional tasks may include cleaning kiosks and starting construction on an additional 3 miles of new trail. Trail construction consists of building a trail 5-8 feet wide where limb and vegetation removal will be the main focus. The project area is relatively flat. Very easy hiking.
