Trail Maintenance on North Manitou Island – The work will include hiking and clearing the 35 miles of wilderness trails on the island. Volunteers will work alongside Park Service employees to use traditional tools such as axe cross cut saw, and peavey to clear and brush the trails on the island. Volunteers may be expected to backcountry camp and hike up to 10 miles per day. In addition, transportation on the off the island requires a 1 hour boat ride (this is provided for free by NPS).

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is known for its world renowned beaches, its towering 450’ perched dunes, and the historical farmsteads and US Life-Saving Service stations. In 2011, the area was voted the Most Beautiful Place in America by Good Morning American and since then people from all over the United States and the world have come to experience the park’s splendor. Traverse City, Michigan is 25 miles east of the park. Traverse City is home to the National Cherry Festival, a bustling downtown, weekly farmer’s markets, and some of the best vineyards and restaurants in the Midwest. Come experience the beauty of Northern Michigan.

Accommodations Description

During the trip, volunteers will be camping on North Manitou Island. The campsite is an established camping location for employee/volunteers of the National Park Service. The site is situated in the historical village on North Manitou Island next to an historic barn. The site has an available fire ring and is steps from the beach on Lake Michigan. Prior and after trip camping is available at car camping site in park. Showers available at end of trip. Volunteers should bring their own tent, sleeping bag, pad, cup/bowl, eating utensils, and personal items.
