SUMMARY:Backpacker's Dream on Northern CA Coast
DESCRIPTION:Discover the rugged beauty of California’s Lost Coast while making a meaningful impact on the land. This Volunteer Vacation blends a multi-day backpacking trip with hands-on trail restoration work along the remote and scenic Rattlesnake Ridge Trail. \nAfter an overnight stay at the King Range Visitor Center\, you’ll hike 4.5 miles to your beachside basecamp at Big Flat\, nestled between the ocean and forested ridgelines. From Tuesday through Thursday\, you’ll cross creeks and traverse 2 miles daily to the worksite\, where you’ll use hand tools like McLeods\, Pulaskis\, and loppers to clear brush and repair trail tread. Your efforts will improve access and safety along this challenging but rewarding stretch of trail. \nExpect varied terrain—from hard-packed paths to soft sand and rocky sections that require balance. This trip is ideal for backpackers ready for adventure and physical work in a breathtaking setting. \nYour final day’s hike will depend on ocean conditions. If tides allow\, you’ll trek 8 miles south over boulder fields and open beaches. If not\, a more stable 4.5-mile route to the north will lead you back to the trailhead. Either way\, you’ll experience unforgettable views and the satisfaction of leaving the trail better than you found it. \nWith logistics handled by experienced leaders\, all you need to do is bring your gear\, your grit\, and your love for the outdoors. \nWe highly recommend prior backpacking experience to participate on this trip. \nThere is no trail experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! SUMMARY:Bitterroot National Forest\, MT - Volunteer Vacation 2024
DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy the magnificent mountains\, the serenity of wilderness\, the miracle of spring flowers\, majestic big game\, and the sounds of birds here in the Bitterroot Mountains! Explore nature and support trails in this 1.6 million acre forest in southwest Montana and Idaho. \nJoin this project in the heavily glaciated\, rugged peaks of the Bitterroot Mountains. Volunteers will work with experienced wilderness stewards from the Selway Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation to clear trails using crosscut saws\, axes\, and handsaws. For a third consecutive year\, this collaborative effort will continue to open the Big Creek Trail #11 from Big Creek Lake to Packbox Pass (at milepost 13.8) on the Montana-Idaho border. This trail threads through a scenic Montana canyon and offers a pristine Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness experience. Secondary tasks may include brushing back overgrown vegetation\, cleaning drains\, and improving the drainage of trail tread. Time permitting\, Volunteers will clear the South Fork Big Creek Trail #118\, a 3-mile trail running along the southern shore of the lake.  \nBig Creek Trail #11 winds about 2.5 miles alongside a shoreline with little elevation change until it begins to climb to Packbox Pass. The climb to the pass is steep with multiple switchbacks\, gaining about 1300 feet over 2 miles. Depending on trail conditions\, including the number of downed trees\, the daily hike to the worksite could range from 0.1 miles to 3 miles. From the trailhead the first 8 miles are moderate\, winding along the well-traveled creek through a forested area and gaining about 1530’ in elevation. The mile-long climb to the lake is fairly steep\, with multiple switchbacks and an elevation gain of about 700’. The last mile to basecamp along the lake has little elevation change but narrow footing in places. \nDuring this trip\, Bitterroot National Forest’s average high temperature is 80°\, and average low temperature is 56°. \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. All you need is a willing attitude and to be in good physical condition to participate in moderate physical activity for approximately 6-8 hours a day with plenty of breaks\, at your own pace. SUMMARY:Special Registration Rate! Eldorado National Forest\, CA - Volunteer Vacation 2024
DESCRIPTION:USE CODE: 2024EldoradoNFVV for a special registration fee of $250 thanks to grant funding received for this project. To register at this price please select “First Trip of the Year” registration cost. Additional trip discount not available for this special rate. \nJoin this project to backpack into a stunning river valley of granite and pine trees and help restore access along this popular canyon trail. The Mokelumne River Canyon has been described as a smaller version of the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River in Yosemite National Park\, with sections of the canyon up to a mile deep. \nThis project will take place deep in the Mokelumne Wilderness. Due to its remote location the trail system surrounding Munson Meadow has fallen into a state of disrepair and is in need of significant cross-cut work. This project will involve a base camp at the Munson Meadow Trailhead which will require volunteers to hike to the location as very high clearance 4×4 would be needed to get there by vehicle. The work will involve tree removal and treadwork on the Munson Meadow Trail and the surrounding trails to Cole Creek\, Long and Black Rock Lakes. The hike to the base camp is a challenging 7.5 mile hike with around 1\,400 feet of elevation gain. Hikes to the project site will vary from 1 to 3 miles. \nDuring this trip\, Eldorado National Forest’s average high temperature is 91°\, and average low temperature is 67°. \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! SUMMARY:Bitterroot National Forest\, Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness\, MT - Volunteer Vacations 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join this project in the heavily glaciated\, rugged peaks of the Bitterroot Mountains! Volunteers will be clearing with crosscut saws\, axes\, and handsaws as well as cleaning drains and improving trail tread. The Big Creek Trail #11 threads through a scenic Montana canyon and offers a pristine Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness experience. \nDuring the first half of the trip\, volunteers will clear the Big Creek trail of fallen trees and overgrown vegetation from Big Creek Lake to Packbox Pass at milepost 13.8\, on the Montana-Idaho border. There will be an optional day off in the middle of the Volunteer Vacation during which volunteers may choose to swim\, hike\, relax at camp\, or bushwhack to help identify and define the route of the historic Big Creek Divide Trail #306. Time permitting\, the crew may spend the latter part of the project clearing the South Fork Big Creek Trail #118\, a 3-mile trail running along the southern shore of the lake. \nVolunteers will camp at one of several campsites that are available\, depending on group size and trail conditions. Volunteers will backpack in 8-9 miles. The trail is fairly flat with easy terrain for the first 7 miles\, with gradual incline. Several footbridges aid with creek crossings. The 1-mile approach to the lake is steep with switchbacks. Total elevation gain about 2400 feet. This trail is well-traveled by outfitters with stock animals and backpackers. \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. SUMMARY:Chugach National Forest\, AK - Volunteer Vacations 2023
DESCRIPTION:This remote backcountry project will take place on the beautiful Lost Lake Trail just north of Seward\, Alaska! The project consists of rebuilding a step and run structure and additional trail maintenance as time allows. Most of the trail work will take place within half mile of our designated campsite on the Lost Lake trail. There is an 80-foot section of existing native spruce step and run that has rotted and needs to be replaced. After demolishing the existing structure\, we will be using yellow cedar 4x10s that have been cached near the worksite to construct a new structure. Work will be strenuous at times and involve hiking with tools\, heavy lifting of large pieces of lumber\, dirt work with pulaskis\, shovels and picks\, and a lot of teamwork. There will be chainsaw use\, however volunteers will not be permitted to use chainsaws. We will construct the new structure and the approaches. If time permits\, we will work on some light brushing and drainage work. On Wednesday\, our off day\, the camp location well situates the crew to go on a world renown hike up to Lost Lake with ample time to enjoy the mind-expanding views. \nThe project lumber will be brought to the worksite by snowmachine the winter before the project. The tools\, group camp gear\, and most of the group’s food will be helicoptered to the campsite location a few days prior to the start of the project. The work tools will then need to be carried about half a mile from the campsite to the worksite at the start of the project. Volunteers will be responsible for packing in all their personal gear such as tent\, sleeping bag and pad\, clothes\, comforts\, etc. about 3.75 miles from the trailhead to the designated campsite on the Lost Lake trail. Everyone will get dirty and tired\, and it will be a fun and productive week in an amazing location! SUMMARY:Bitterroot National Forest\, Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness\, Montana - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:This project will take place in the heavily glaciated\, rugged peaks of the Bitterroot Mountains. Volunteers will be clearing with crosscut saws\, axes\, and handsaws as well as cleaning drains and improving trail tread. The Big Creek Trail #11 threads through a scenic Montana canyon and offers a pristine Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness experience. During the first half of the trip we will clear the Big Creek trail of fallen trees from milepost 9 to Packbox Pass at milepost 13.8. There will be an optional day off in the middle of the week during which volunteers may choose to swim\, hike\, or relax at camp. If there is time\, the latter half of the project will be spent scouting and clearing the Big Creek Divide Trail #306. With wayfinding assistance from the Forest Service\, work will entail bushwhacking\, flagging\, and clearing the switchback trail. The Big Creek Divide Trail is full of history and has not been cleared in several years; be prepared for strenuous work and bring your sense of adventure! \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Salish and Ktunaxa ɁamakɁis peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. AHS invites all volunteers to join us in our commitment to support and amplify the work of Indigenous communities as they work to dismantle the systems of oppression that these communities continue to face today.

SUMMARY:Seneca Creek Backcountry\, West Virginia - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Seneca Creek Backcountry offers hikers\, mountain bikers\, and horsemen diverse backcountry to explore. Over 60 miles of trails twist and turn through 19\,600 acres mountain vistas\, open fields\, along gurgling mountain streams and waterfalls\, and some of the best camping in West Virginia. Bear Hunter Trail is a steep trail that climbs up to Allegheny Mountain. The trail is well located but needs rebenching and drain installation work in order to keep the trail in the correct alignment and not sloughing-off the hillside. The approaches to a stream crossing could be greatly improved with drain installation to prevent sedimentation of small streams. This trail is an important connector trail in multiple backpacking loops in the premier Seneca Creek Backcountry. This project is part of a greater push to improve the trail systems in this backcountry area that serves as a destination for many backpackers. The 2021 AHS volunteer vacation took place on Judy Spring Trail which is also part of this sought after backpacking loop. American Hiking Society volunteers will return to this area in 2022 to continue improving access to this popular backcountry location! \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Massawomeck peoples past and present.

SUMMARY:Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area
DESCRIPTION:TRIP CANCELLED due to COVID-19: \n  \nThe A-B Wilderness Foundation invites you to spend a week with us camping out in the backcountry and working on various projects benefiting the trails in the heart of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area of Montana. Far up the Boulder River which bisects the Absaroka and Beartooth ranges we will work on a network of trails rising out of the Fourmile Creek area. The Fourmile and Meatrack trails that lead up to Silver Pass and Silver Lake branch out from the meadows where we will camp\, and the first mile of each of them needs a combination of restoration and trail work. We will pull non-native houndstongue\, construct water bars\, build check dams and retaining walls out of stone and wood; and finish everything off by brushing the corridor. This is all-around quite strenuous work\, as we will be working with stone\, locally sourced logs\, and standard trail tools (shovels\, pulaskis\, picks\, crosscut saws). \nOur trip starts at the Frosty Freeze in Big Timber\, MT. From there we will carpool/caravan up the Main Boulder River to the Fourmile Trailhead. Only vehicles with higher clearance are recommended on this road. The first and last night of the trip\, the crew will camp at the Fourmile Trailhead. On Thursday morning our crew will hike in the 5 miles to basecamp and work out of there for the rest of the week. The Backcountry Horsemen will carry in our heavy stuff—food\, tools\, tents\, etc.—so volunteers only need to carry a day pack with their clothes and personal items.

SUMMARY:The Long Trail/Appalachian Trail
DESCRIPTION:TRIP CANCELLED due to COVID-19: \n  \nLocated on the Long Trail/Appalachian Trail in Southern\, VT\, Stratton Pond is the most popular overnight backcountry site on the Long Trail. Stratton Pond is a destination for day hikers and the weekend backpacker and the pond has a long and storied history in Vermont trail development. It’s deep in the woods\, approximately 10 miles from a major road crossing\, and hikers frequently stop for a swim and to eat lunch while enjoying the view and the call of the loons. The Long/Appalachian Trail at Stratton Pond and the Lye Brook Trail\, which leads to the Stratton View Tenting Area\, were historically built on the shoreline of the pond. As a result of the high use\, beaver activity\, and eroding shoreline\, these trails were having an adverse impact on pond ecology and water quality. The trails were also in very poor condition. In 2019 the Green Mountain Club\, in partnership with the Green Mountain National Forest and Appalachian Trail Conservancy\, began a multi-year project at Stratton Pond. This includes re-locating the trails away from the shoreline to a more sustainable route\, hardening the surfaces at Stratton View Tenting Area\, constructing a composting privy at Stratton View and de-commissioning old trails. The Green Mountain Club is requesting volunteers with the American Hiking Society to provide assistance with these tasks. Projects may include but are not limited to brushing-in old trails\, constructing step-stones\, rebuilding puncheon\, hauling lumber or preparing a site for privy construction. Volunteers will gain experience in trail re-locations and trail design while also having a positive impact on the ecology of the pond and the experience of the hikers.

SUMMARY:Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness\, Superior National Forest
DESCRIPTION:TRIP CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19: \n  \nBe a part of the stewardship legacy of the first long-distance wilderness hiking and backpacking trail in Minnesota! The Border Route Trail is a rugged 65-mile-long hiking trail that traverses the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in the far northeast corner of Minnesota and follows the international border between Minnesota and Ontario. The trail follows ridgelines wherever feasible\, offering expansive views across the BWCAW and Canada. It is rugged and primitive in nature\, providing solitude and a true wilderness experience to those looking for something off of the beaten path. In March 2019\, the Border Route Trail became an official part of the North Country Trail: a National Scenic Trail currently under construction that stretches 4\,600 miles from North Dakota to Vermont. Downed trees and patches of thick brush are common obstacles on the trail. This particular Volunteer Vacation will focus on using primitive hand tools (such as saws and nippers) to remove fallen trees and trim back vegetation from the trail. Additional tasks may involve some maintenance of and improvement to designated campsites. We will camp in the wilderness backcountry at a designated site and daytrip to the work location\, sometimes commuting via canoe to portions of the trail. Come enjoy a very unique experience and some of the best of the BWCAW!

SUMMARY:Chugach National Forest
DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19: \nInvasive weed control is a vital and ongoing effort on the Chugach National Forest! We have relatively few infestations\, thus our work in controlling weeds has a huge impact. Volunteers will be traveling via train (no additional fee) to Spencer Glacier and Lake area to control dandelions and other non-natives along trails and developed sites. Work will consist of a 4-mile hike with 1\,500′ elevation gain. The crew will stay at Spencer until Wednesday before departing to camp at Porcupine Campground in Hope\, AK to control non-native species along Hope Point or Gull Rock Trail. Hope Point Trail is extremely steep and climbs approximately 3\,500′ in about 2 miles. The group will also control European bird cherry in the town of Hope.

SUMMARY:Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE WE ARE RESCHEDULING THIS TRIP DUE TO COVID-19. STAY TUNED FOR THE NEW DATES: \nVolunteers will clear blowdowns and brush along the wilderness section of the Border Route Trail (BRT) within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northeastern Minnesota’s Superior National Forest. The BRT is a remote\, 65 mile footpath and part of the North Country National Scenic Trail which spans 4\,600 miles from North Dakota to Vermont. The wilderness section covers 36 mile through the BWCA and is maintained by using hand saws and loppers to clear the 4′ x 8′ corridor as power tools are not allowed inside the BWCA. The plan is to paddle in with canoes to a base camp inside the BWCA and do daily clearing\, returning to base camp each evening. However\, we need a plan B in case the ice hasn’t gone out of the lakes\, preventing water travel. Unlikely\, but it is possible. So\, we are going to plan for a backpack in to base camp\, and do daily clearing and returning to base camp every evening. This means we will travel lighter\, carrying backpacking meals and cooking equipment. If the ice is gone\, we will paddle in with canoes. Our goal is to clear 5 or 6 miles of the trail.

SUMMARY:Bob Marshall Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:Come join fellow stewards in working in the most pristine Wilderness areas in the lower 48. The Iconic Bob Marshall Wilderness is the crown jewel of the Rocky Mountains. And all good things are worth some effort! The same goes for the hike into base camp for this project. The hike begins at Owl Creek trailhead and hikes up\, up\, and over pendant pass\, on the Swan Crest. After the pass\, it’s downhill to basecamp near Pendant camp. This remote trail needs some helping hands improve the trail bed (tread) and build a new turnpike. The views will be well worth the effort! The Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation provides a crew leader\, tools and PPE\, food\, pack support and all the group gear. You just need to bring your personal backpacking equipment and a ‘can do’ attitude.

SUMMARY:Eagle Cap Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:We’ll kick our trip off with a brief project overview at the Forest Service Barn in Enterprise\, followed by dinner at a local brew pub. There are several lodging options in town\, or you can pitch a tent at the Forest Service compound. Our base camp will be located on Huckleberry Mountain; work sites will include locations on those parts of trails 1667\, 1689 and 1665 that primarily access McCubbin Basin and the headwaters of Goat Creek. Our goal for the week will be to improve trail access and reduce sedimentation in streams. Specific projects will vary throughout the week and will include building and maintaining erosion control structures\, trail clearing (with crosscut saws)\, and brushing. Expect to use a variety of primitive tools\, ranging from bow saws & crosscuts for log-out to shovels and pulaskis for tread maintenance and restoration. Note that this is an arduous project in a spectacular backcountry setting—be prepared to earn your meals!
