SUMMARY:Returning Favorite- Backpacker's Dream on Northern CA Coast
DESCRIPTION:Combine a pre-planned backpacking trip with trail cleanup! \nHike 2 miles to basecamp and then hike 2-6 miles roundtrip daily while working on the trail. \nThe King Range National Conservation Area has over 85 miles of wilderness hiking trails and 25 miles of mountain bike trails. Rolling hills of wildflowers\, hundreds of elephant seals\, and thrilling creek crossings are notable highlights of a springtime visit. \nVolunteers will help remove overgrown brush and repair trail tread along the King Crest Trail. This 11-mile National Recreation Trail follows the spine of the King Range and highlights various ecosystems\, from old growth forest to ridgetop chaparral\, with 360 degree views of California’s Lost Coast\, the Mattole and Eel River Valleys\, and surrounding mountains. Our primary work site is within the shadow of King Peak\, the tallest mountain in the King Range NCA at 4\,088 ft. This post-fire\, coastal landscape experiences fast regrowth and requires consistent maintenance to provide epic opportunities for day-hikers\, backpackers\, and equestrian users. Depending on marine conditions\, the group will hike out on Thursday down to the coast at Buck Creek (8 miles\, +500 – 3200 ft elevation)\, and Friday’s hike out will be along the Lost Coast Trail (5.5 miles\, no elevation change). These details may change depending on the marine forecast and the group’s desire/ability. \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. All you need is a willing attitude and to be in good physical condition to participate in moderate physical activity for approximately 6-8 hours a day with plenty of breaks\, at your own pace. Find out more about what it’s like to join a Volunteer Vacation and other frequently asked questions here. \nAvg. Temperature: \nTypical weather for this area during this season has highs of about 55–60°F and lows of 42–48°F. Early April on the northern California coast is cool and often cloudy\, with light rain\, drizzle\, or coastal fog fairly common. \nLand Acknowledgment: \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Sinkyone people past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded these islands and mountain landscapes for countless generations\, and those who continue this stewardship today. This acknowledgement is one step in our ongoing commitment to uplift Indigenous voices. We invite the American Hiking Society community to learn about\, support\, and stand in solidarity with the Indigenous peoples whose lands we live\, work\, and recreate on.

Hungry Mother State Park is known for beautiful woodlands and a placid 108-acre lake in the heart of the mountains. This state park suffered extensive damage during the 2024 hurricane season. \nFor this project\, volunteers will continue trail work on the Raiders Run Reroute\, which American Hiking Society crews have worked on for the last two years. The trails have been bench cut (trail steps) on moderately steep slopes but will be improved for sustainability with water diversion features. Volunteers will improve trails by maintaining\, shaping\, and defining existing hiking and mountain bike features including berms\, rollers\, and trail tread formations on these trails along with other necessary features. Most of the work will be spent bending\, shoveling\, raking\, chopping\, and tamping. SUMMARY:Gold Rush and Whales in Hope\, Alaska
DESCRIPTION:Beluga whales and a gold rush town among scenic Alaskan Trails! The Gull Rock Trail offers some enthralling views as it extends for 5.7 miles along the south shore of the Turnagain Arm from the end of the Hope Highway to a rocky peninsula. It travels over gradual hills with occasional steep sections and has one of the least changes in elevation on the Seward Ranger District\, providing a unique hiking experience in the forest. \nAt the end of the Gull Rock trail is Gull Rock\, which is on Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Land. It protrudes into the Turnagain Arm and offers many nooks and crannies to explore. Hope Point trail\, which leaves from the Gull Rock Trailhead\, makes a great day hike and adventurous hikers can fan out to other summits in the Kenai Mountains. The trail is scenic with outstanding views of Resurrection Creek Valley\, Turnagain Arm\, Cook Inlet\, Fire Island\, and the Chugach Mountains. The trail starts in a birch/spruce forest with a thick under story of grass and devil’s club and continues with switchbacks into alpine meadows lush with wildflowers. Wildlife in the area includes moose\, bear\, white beluga whale\, and many birds. \nCome help us remove a 130-foot section of boardwalk that has rotted and needs to be replaced. After volunteers work to demolish the existing boardwalk structure\, volunteers will be using treated fir boards that have been cached near the worksite to construct a new structure. Work will involve hiking\, heavy lifting of large pieces of lumber\, dirt work with pulaskis\, shovels and picks\, and a lot of teamwork. The project lumber will be brought to the worksite by snow machine the winter before the project for the decking. \nThis project will allow for continued travel over this section of trail without creating muddy holes. If there is additional time\, we will work on some light brushing and drainage work. SUMMARY:History Comes Alive in the Bridger-Teton National Forest! WY
DESCRIPTION:History comes alive in the Bridger-Teton National Forest! The Shafer Creek Trail is part of a trail system that makes up a section of the historic Oregon Trail. \nVolunteers will enjoy Kemmerer\, Wyoming a scenic location with great fishing at the Kemmerer Reservoir\, Lake Viva Naughton\, or the Hams Fork River. History abounds with the first J.C. Penny store opened in 1902\, Kemmerer’s first underground coal mine was opened in 1881\, and Fossil Butte National Monument\, where you can hike into a prehistoric lakebed! \nThe Shafer Creek Trail is in need of some TLC\, showing its age\, and the years of deferred maintenance are taking their toll. The trail has overgrown\, eroded\, and blocked with deadfall. The trail has become difficult to navigate\, which has impacted visitation and the visitor experience. \nRestoring the trail will involve several elements: recutting the trail corridor with shovels and Pulaskis; removing downed trees by bucking them into manageable pieces with hand saws\, axes\, and chainsaws\, and then removing cut tree rounds from the trail proper; delimbing hazardous branches that are hanging over the trail; brushing out the overgrowth by using brush saws and adze hoes to create a cleanly defined trail. SUMMARY:Alaskan Rainforest Paradise on Prince of Wales Island
DESCRIPTION:Alaskan Rainforest Paradise on Prince of Wales Island. Cave Tour Included! \nOften referred to as P.O.W\, the third largest island in the US\, is part of the Tongass National Forest. \nThe island is a 2 million acre temperate rainforest with endless mountains\, streams flowing with salmon\, and bays to watch breaching whales. \nNative Alaskans have inhabited Prince of Wales Island for thousands of years and the island is rich with ancient tradition and living culture. P.O.W. has the most extensive road system in Southeast Alaska\, with over 1500 miles of road to explore the entire island\, including over 100 miles of paved highway. The island is a haven for freshwater and saltwater fishing\, wildlife viewing\, berry picking\, sea kayaking\, birdwatching\, and learning about Alaska Native traditions. \nThe Sunnahae Trail climbs Sunnahae Mountain\, which overlooks the seaside town of Craig and the western outer islands. The trail is steep but in great condition and is beloved by the residents of Craig and the rest of the island\, with many hikers using the trail multiple times a week. Craig is a lovely\, full-service community of about 1000 people with a grocery store\, restaurant\, and medical center. \nThe Harris River Campground\, where AHS volunteers will stay\, is located on the paved highway between Craig and Hollis\, a drive that includes views of the Klawock mountains and Klawock Lake. Campsites are along the Harris River and provide 14 drive-in campsites. The Harris River is home to silver salmon\, pink salmon\, Dolly Varden\, steelhead trout\, rainbow trout\, and cutthroat trout. \nVolunteers who join this project will have the opportunity to do an El Capitan Cave Tour. El Capitan Cave\, the largest of more than 500 caves on the island\, offers a trip back in time. The scenic drive from the campsite to the cave is about 2.5 hours on paved roads until the final 15 miles. Visitors will meet Forest Service guides at the cave interpretive site\, located in the beautiful El Capitan Passage on the north end of Prince of Wales Island. After their brief talk about formation and mapping of the cave and scientific discoveries\, pick out a helmet\, headlamp and flashlight—and climb. The trail zigzags up concrete stairs and natural tread with rest stops along the way\, passing through old growth forest. On the deck at the cave\, guides outline safety and everyone turns on headlamps. The first 50 feet of the passage squeezes between boulders and a low ceiling; the cave then opens out. The tour goes about 500 feet into the cave. Guides provide you with information about cave formation\, speleothems (cave features)\, cave biology and fossil finds. \nDon’t miss out on this unforgettable experience!
