SUMMARY:Cumberland Trail State Scenic Trail - Volunteer Vacations 2021
DESCRIPTION:The Cumberland Trail State Scenic Trail (CTSST) is a backcountry hiking trail that extends from a northern terminus at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park across eleven Tennessee counties along the Cumberland Plateau\, to a southern terminus at Signal Point\, part of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park in Signal Mountain\, Tennessee. Of 322+ planned miles of trail\, over 215 miles are currently open for public use. When complete\, the trail will connect three national Parks\, three Tennessee State Parks\, five State Natural Areas\, multiple Wildlife and Resource Management areas\, and a Tennessee State Forest. The Cumberland Trail will be Tennessee’s contribution to the Great Eastern Trail\, which will cross nine states and 1\,800 miles\, extending from Alabama to New York. On this trip\, volunteers will build trail that will join the Head of Sequatchie Resource Management Area with Black and Brady Mountain segments. Specific tasks include using various hand tools to clear brush\, dig trail tread\, construct rock steps\, and install trail markers. The team will also create drainage features\, prepare bridge sites\, and construct other elements of sustainable trail design. \nCURRENT COVID TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE (Link)

SUMMARY:Tonto National Forest - Volunteer Vacations 2021
DESCRIPTION:In 2020 more than 125 miles of the Arizona National Scenic Trail was impacted by wildfire. The largest of the fires to impact the trail was the Bush Fire in central Arizona which consumed more than 190\,000 acres and closed 40 miles of the AZT through the Four Peaks and Pine Mountain. As initial assessments have been completed it is clear that the recovery from the fire will be long and will require a massive effort from volunteers and paid crews alike to open the trail and keep it safe for users. The need is critical and the work will help us keep a piece of beloved trail from fading back into the wild. Our efforts will concentrate on the area between El Oso Road and Boulder Creek\, stabilizing creek crossings\, repairing switchbacks and clearing any deadfall that has blocked the trail. There’s little brush left\, so the majority of the work will be digging and tread rehabilitation. All tools and instruction will be provided – if you’ve always wanted a chance to work with big rocks – this is it! \nCURRENT COVID TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE (Link)

SUMMARY:Hungry Mother State Park - Volunteer Vacations 2021
DESCRIPTION:Raider’s Run Trail was historically used as a horseback riding trail and has been turned into a hiking/biking trail. Many sections of the trail need to be re-routed to make it more user friendly and sustainable. The trail will be bench cut on moderately steep slopes but will be laid out sustainably with water diversion features including sheet flow on the tread and out-slope and grade reversals. \nCURRENT COVID TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE (Link)

SUMMARY:Mark Twain National Forest - Volunteer Vacations 2021
DESCRIPTION:The crew will help construct a brand new hiking trail from Greer Spring Trailhead to the historic Greer Mill. Volunteers will be trained on proper trail tread construction techniques. The trail will be flagged out in advance. The trailhead also provides access to Greer Spring — the largest spring on national forest system land. The area is exceptionally beautiful with tall hardwood forests\, crystal clear rivers and springs and tons of unique history. If the project is completed early\, priority trail maintenance work will occur at the Eagle Bluff Trail which is situated in the scenic Markham Springs Recreation Area. This work will include tread reconstruction\, water bar installation\, staircase maintenance\, logging out trees and signing the trail. All training will be provided. \nMore information on the recently restored Greer Mill: In the 19th-century\, water milling was an essential industry that provided farmers access to grain processing and\, likewise\, provided rural populations access to flour. Samuel Greer\, an early settler of Oregon County\, built Greer Mill in 1883 and\, with his partner\, George Mainprize\, kept it in steady business until 1899. After this point\, ownership of Greer Mill changed hands many times\, but operations continued until 1920\, at which time the mill was sold. Closure that year was\, most likely\, due to increased competition from the railroads\, which\, when routes were completed\, could finally stretch through the Ozarks – railroads could bring in volumes of grain\, flour\, and other goods that the local mills could not match. \nGreer Spring information: A popular day hike for Forest visitors. Greer Spring is the second largest spring in Missouri. Its average daily flow of 222 million gallons more than doubles the size of the Eleven Point National Scenic River into which it flows. The spring flows from two outlets about 250 feet apart at the bottom of a steep\, shaded ravine at the terminus of the trail. The spring run drops 62 feet in elevation for 1.25 miles where it runs into the Eleven Point National Scenic River. Access to Greer Spring is via a 0.9 mile trail that descends about 250 feet in elevation along a gentle gradient from the trailhead at Missouri Highway 19. The trail to the spring travels through a mixture of hardwoods and pines. The overstory of trees\, includes a variety of oaks\, shortleaf pine\, hickory\, maples\, basswood\, and black gum. Hikers will also see flowering dogwoods\, sassafras\, persimmon\, hazelnut\, cedar\, and hackberry. \nCURRENT COVID TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE (Link)

SUMMARY:Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness - Volunteer Vacations 2021
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will help maintain sections of the Border Route Trail / North Country National Scenic Trail (BRT for short) that are in need of basic maintenance work. This entails using hand tools to remove blowdowns and clear brush from the trail corridor. We will be working on about a roughly 5-mile stretch of the BRT within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the worksite will be remote. The most difficult tasks will be 1) portaging on the way in/out and 2) doing the clearing work. Portaging is the act of carrying all your personal gear\, some of the group gear\, plus the canoes and tools over rough trails in between the lakes. This trip will entail 1 portage on the way in / out and maybe one additional portage during the daily work. \nCURRENT COVID TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE (Link)

SUMMARY:Pike National Forest - Volunteer Vacations 2021
DESCRIPTION:There are 2 trails in the same area which are located on the Forest Service’s AG Ranch which was the home of the Rocky Mt. Regional Specially Pack String from 1990 to 2018. The Brookside AG & the Ben Tyler trails lead into the Lost Creek Wilderness. There are 2 sections of the Brookside AG that are missing through the ranch which have been started but are not yet complete so this work would be trail construction. The existing sections of trail need maintenance. The spur trail of the Ben Tyler that leads to the current Ben Tyler needs maintenance. At some time in the future this will be the main trail due to the danger of parking along the highway at the current trail head. Most of the work is lighter in nature for trail work and most is in Ponderosa grasslands with Aspen mixed in. The work is lighter than many trail projects because there is not the heavy rock work\, steep terrain\, nor trees to remove. The elevation of the area of work and camping is 8\,500 to 9\,000 feet. \nCURRENT COVID TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE (Link)

SUMMARY:Sheep Mountain - Volunteer Vacations 2021
DESCRIPTION:Sheep Mountain Trail is a non-motorized trail that winds up an impressive box canyon to the top of Sheep Mountain. The trail is a popular destination due to its desirable settings and close proximity to both Buffalo Bill State Park and US Hwy 14\, which connects Cody to Yellowstone National Park. The trail starts at 5650 ft. elevation. After 2 miles\, at 6900 ft. elevation\, visitors can find an old historic cabin. This marks the end of the designated trail. From here\, BLM-administered public land and The Nature Conservancy land is open to the public for further exploration. Many undeveloped routes can lead visitors to one of the several high points on Sheep Mountain. Volunteers are needed to restore sections of the Sheep Mountain Trail. This would include trimming brush and vegetation\, surface water control using water bars\, grade dips and ponding\, removal of roots\, stumps\, and rocks\, improving drainage\, fixing tread creep\, building crib walls\, slough and berm work\, and signage and marker installations. \nCURRENT COVID TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE (Link)

SUMMARY:Appalachian Trail\, Maine - Volunteer Vacations 2021
DESCRIPTION:Help protect the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) and enjoy the rugged beauty of Maine! On this project\, we will monitor and maintain the boundaries of the land preserved for the Trail. This public land is the backbone of the largest natural corridor that remains east of the Mississippi River\, creating a haven and migration path for humans and animals alike. Maintaining the boundaries of this land helps to protect it from encroachments such as motorized vehicles and timber theft. Using a GPS\, map\, and compass\, the crew will follow the surveyed boundaries of the trail corridor. We will clear brush with loppers\, paint trees\, replace US Boundary signs\, and record the condition of metal survey markers\, called “monuments.” Each day\, we will duck into the woods just off the A.T.\, find the boundary\, and leap-frog each other as we move along. At the end of the day\, we’ll hike back on the A.T. and be amazed at how much ground we covered! Teams will maintain up to 1 mile of boundary line and hike 2 or more miles per day. Maine is especially wonderful this time of year. After experiencing the rugged beauty of the trail\, volunteers will enjoy the full-service South Arm campground on the shores of Lower Richardson Lake. We hope you join us on this challenging and rewarding project. Volunteers like you are the heart and soul of the Appalachian Trail! \nCURRENT COVID TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE (Link)

SUMMARY:Letchworth State Park - Volunteer Vacations 2021
DESCRIPTION:The Letchworth Branch Trail of the Finger Lakes Trail System is a 27 mile long pathway along the Genesee River as it passes through the Letchworth Gorge. This trail is heavily used by hikers\, runners\, and visitors to the area as it traverses several overlooks of the gorge and its three waterfalls. Much of the trail work will be drainage work\, reroutes and elevating the trail in the most heavily used sections of the trail system. Parts of the trail are now below its opposing sides and become very muddy in the spring and when heavy rainfall is experienced. Water bars\, ditches\, and knicks will be used to help in these situations. \nCURRENT COVID TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE (Link)

SUMMARY:Wallowa-Whitman National Forest - Volunteer Vacations 2021
DESCRIPTION:Join our 2021 trip as we head for the spectacular Maxwell Lake nested high in the Eagle Cap Wilderness. We’ll depart the Maxwell Lake Trailhead along the Lostine Wild and Scenic River and backpack into the basin that holds this alpine gem. Pack stock will carry all food and group gear\, giving us time for a 4-mile hike into base camp. The trail provides spectacular views of the Lostine River drainage and Hurricane Divide to the east. As the trail ascends towards the lake views of the Eagle Cap Peak can be seen to the south-east. Our camp for the week is located just below Maxwell Lake. We’ll be located just off-trail nestled in a high alpine meadow between the towering spires of Flagstaff Point and Elkhorn Peak. Views abound from this incredibly scenic location! Work will include restoration of rehabilitating camp sites and user created trails around the lake\, the rehabilitation of an old search and rescue helicopter landing zone (includes piling and potential burning of old cut trees and stumps) and trail maintenance (building check dams\, drain dips\, water bars; brushing; possible light log-out). \nCURRENT COVID TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE (Link)

SUMMARY:Monongahela National Forest - Volunteer Vacations 2021
DESCRIPTION:Seneca Creek Backcountry offers something for everyone seeking adventure. This area boasts some of the best native trout fishing and backpacking loops that transport visitors through a diverse collection of ecosystems. Nearly 60 miles of trails wind through stands of red spruce\, open meadows\, and along fast-flowing mountain streams with elevations ranging from 3\,000 feet to over 4\,800 feet. Seneca Creek Trail is the main artery of this area and is a launching point for many backpackers. Judy Springs Trail is an important connector for hikers and backpackers looking to climb their way up to Spruce Knob\, the highest point in West Virginia. As this trail cuts up the hillside through wildflower-filled meadows\, it begins to erode and damage sensitive habitats that it traverses. Stabilizing the trail through additions of drainage and tread armoring will improve user experience and safety as well as improved protection of the meadow ecosystem. \nCURRENT COVID TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE (Link)

SUMMARY:Chugach National Forest - Volunteer Vacations 2021
DESCRIPTION:Gull Rock trail in Hope\, Alaska is very scenic as it parallels the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet (well above high tide). The trail passes through diverse vegetation: birch-aspen woods; alder-choked gullies; spruce forests; tundra with tiny spruce\, mosses\, and low cranberry bushes; hemlock forests with a carpet of moss. Many breaks in the woods offer views of Turnagain Arm\, the shoreline\, and Denali (on clear days). Volunteers will camp in the Forest Service campground near the Gull Rock trail. This campground is about 2 miles beyond the main street in the town of Hope\, Alaska and overlooks the Turnagain Arm at the edge of a bluff. The majority of the trailwork will take place within 2½ miles of the Gull Rock trailhead. There are a total of 4 native no deck puncheons (small crossover bridges) between 12 and 14 feet long that are rotten and need to be replaced with treated dimensional lumber. The lumber is on or near the worksites. Work will be strenuous at times and involve both heavy lifting and dirt work with pulaskis and shovels. We will construct the new structures and their approaches\, maintain existing drainages by reestablishing and cleaning them out with hand tools\, chop roots out of the trail tread\, and repair and widen tread. Everyone will get dirty and tired and it will be a fun and productive week! \nCURRENT COVID TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR STATE (Link) \nAnyone entering Alaska from another state or country are advised to: \nSubmit an Alaska Safe Travels form through the Alaska Safe Travels App and Arrive with proof of a qualifying negative molecular based COVID-19 test or Receive a COVID-19 test when you arrive in Alaska\, and follow strict social distancing until results arrive.

SUMMARY:Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:TRIP CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19: \n  \nTrinity River National Wildlife Refuge is situated in a bottomland hardwood forest. Volunteers will be working on trail maintenance on the Knobby Knees and Great Egret Ridge Trails. These trails offer scenic views of symphonies of knobby knees peeking through the silent\, still waters of the backwood swamps\, Spanish moss hanging overhead in the bald cypress trees\, and\, if one is quiet enough\, alligators and other fauna peering back from the waters below Palmer Bayou Boardwalk. While the trails in the project areas total 16 miles\, this particular Volunteer Vacation will involve approximately 12 miles\, in total\, with no more than 5 miles of hiking per day. Tasks include removing fallen vegetation and limbs from the trail and trimming vegetation that could scratch or pose other inconveniences to hikers. Additional tasks may include cleaning kiosks and starting construction on an additional 3 miles of new trail. Trail construction consists of building a trail 5-8 feet wide where limb and vegetation removal will be the main focus. The project area is relatively flat. Very easy hiking.

SUMMARY:Tonto National Forest - Arizona National Scenic Trail
DESCRIPTION:TRIP CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19: \n  \nThe Arizona National Scenic trail travels 800 miles across the state of Arizona between the Mexican border and Utah. It highlights the diversity of wild landscapes in Arizona from the iconic Sonoran desert to deep ponderosa forests. This project is located in the rugged and mysterious Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix and involves building approximately 1 mile of new trail to bypass a tricky road near the head of Cottonwood Canyon. This area was burned in the 2019 Woodbury fire\, but regrowth is coming back fast. Working on gently sloping terrain in rocky soils\, we’ll need to brush a corridor\, clear the tread and build some rock maintenance structures. We’ll be using standard digging tools such as picks\, shovels\, and McCleods as well as some lopping and sawing. Our camp will be close to the work site\, but each time we build more trail\, we’ll walk farther to access it.

SUMMARY:Hungry Mother State Park
DESCRIPTION:TRIP CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19: \n  \nSince implementing the Trail Master Plan we have provided rehabilitation\, re-routes\, and new trail construction to bring our current trail inventory up to standards. It is crucial to provide sustainable trails and recreation areas to meet an increase demand for hiking trails. We will address current needs to make various trails more sustainable by installing rock armoring in areas that currently have drainage issues\, knicks\, rolling grade dips\, and corridor clearing\, out slope and de-berming. In addition to this we will also address areas of trail that need grooming by raking and removing small rocks\, leaves\, and leaf litter on the trail tread.

SUMMARY:California Coastal National Monument\, Trinidad CA
DESCRIPTION:Trip CANCELLED due to COVID-19: \n  \nVolunteers will work on two public trails to spectacular beaches along the Trinidad coastline in northern California\, where the redwoods meet the Pacific Ocean. These are amazing ocean front public use areas that highlight the California Coastal National Monument’s offshore rocks and islands\, coastal forests\, sand bluffs and shoreline tidepools. We will replace trail steps at the Luffenholtz Beach Park vista point trail. We will also work on trail steps at the nearby Old Home Beach public trail. These trails offer scenic vistas and access to surf fishing and tidepool exploring. Last year’s volunteers loved their experience here. Trail distances are less than one mile from trail head downhill to the beach\, but include moderately difficult hiking on unleveled terrain. Work will include replacement of existing trail steps\, installation of new crib steps\, trail clearing and removal of invasive plants. Trail work will also include manual moving of materials (lumber\, beach boulders\, gravel\, logs)\, trail step construction\, digging trail drainage / water bars\, and clearing brush and ivy. The nearby group campsite is at Patricks Point State Park and includes warm showers and flush-toilet restrooms. Our small ‘city’ of Trinidad is recognized as a CA Coastal National Monument Gateway Community for its scenic vistas and community support of coastal conservation. The nearby city of Arcata\, a college town home to Humboldt State University\, has a downtown plaza and many social events.
