SUMMARY:Tuolumne River Trust at Stanislaus National Forest\, CA – 2023 Volunteer Vacations
DESCRIPTION:Join Tuolumne River Trust to help maintain the Tuolumne River Canyon Trail\, known for stunning spring wildflowers\, granite walls\, the roar of the Tuolumne River\, waterfall after waterfall and pristine swimming holes to cool off in. The world class 18-mile whitewater run down the Wild and Scenic Tuolumne River in the Stanislaus National Forest attracts thousands of visitors each year\, who come to enjoy the natural scenery and outdoor adventures found there. \nDue to lingering effects of the 2013 Rim Fire\, this stretch of river is a challenge for the Forest Service in terms of managing and responding to environmental impacts. The Tuolumne River Canyon Trail follows the course of the river for 5 miles\, ending at the confluence of the wild Clavey River. Many parts of the trail are becoming overgrown with brush\, the tread is in need of widening\, and there are trees that need to be cut out of the trail in places. Volunteers will focus their time on brushing back vegetation with hand saws and loppers\, and repairing trail tread with hand tools like Rogue hoes and Mcleods. Tuolumne River Trust’s staff will provide background on the project\, training to do the work\, and work alongside the volunteer crew during their time on the trail. The crew will be driving 25-35 minutes from camp to reach the trailhead. Getting to the trail is a bumpy\, narrow road on a steep mountainside\, but clearance is appropriate for most 2wd vehicles (AWD/4WD preferred). The host will transport the majority of the crew to the trailhead\, up to 8 participants. The daily hiking distance will range between 2-6 miles total a day\, along a river canyon trail that has low to moderate change in elevation. The crew will do 3 days of work on the trail\, do 1 day of service at the non-profit camp the volunteers are staying at\, and have one day off to enjoy visiting beautiful Yosemite Valley (a 1 hour\, 10 minute drive from camp). \nThere is no experience needed to join a Volunteer Vacation! Your expert hosts will provide detailed instruction\, tool demonstrations\, and project oversight throughout the week. All you need is a willing attitude and to be in good physical condition to participate in moderate physical activity for approximately 6-8 hours a day with plenty of breaks\, at your own pace. Find out more about what it’s like to join a Volunteer Vacation and other frequently asked questions here. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Miwok and Me-Wuk (Central Sierra Miwok) peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, their deep and sacred connection to these lands\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. We offer this land acknowledgement as the first of many steps to stand as an ally and amplify Indigenous voices. We invite the American Hiking Society community to join us through continued efforts to support Indigenous communities and learn more about the history of the lands on which we live\, work and recreate.

SUMMARY:Savannah National Wildlife Refuge\, SC - 2023 Volunteer Vacations
DESCRIPTION:Join Savannah National Wildlife Refuge for a chance to be immersed in nature while working to restore access and reopen the refuge’s Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive after an extensive renovation project! The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge\, established April 6\, 1927\, consists of 31\,551 acres of freshwater marshes\, tidal rivers and creeks\, and bottomland hardwoods. About half the refuge is bottomland\, composed primarily of cypress\, gum\, and maple species. The chain of national wildlife refuges that forms the Savannah Coastal Refuges Complex extends from Pinckney Island NWR near Hilton Head Island\, South Carolina\, to Wolf Island NWR near Darien\, Georgia. \nFor this project\, volunteers will work on the restoration of the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive and hiking trails on the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. The Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive and associated trails\, as well as the Little Back River Trail and Tupelo Trail\, are closed due to an ongoing impoundment renovation project. This important habitat project is currently on-schedule to be completed by Spring 2023\, and they need the help from volunteers like yourself! After being closed to the public for almost 2 years\, the refuge is planning for a grand reopening. The volunteers will spend the week outside trimming trails\, replacing trail signs\, and bringing the refuge back to life. The project will be supervised by an experienced refuge staff and USFWS Volunteers\, and all required tools and equipment will be provided. Work will include hauling\, trimming\, lifting\, and other outdoor trail maintenance activities. \nVolunteers will drive from accommodations to the daily project work sites via the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive\, a one-way 4.5 mile driving loop through the managed portion of the Refuge named for one of the rice plantations that once existed on the site. The drive is well-maintained gravel easily navigated. There are trails that finger off the main drive that vary in length that will be apart of this projection completion. Volunteers will need to be able to hike at least 1 mile on their own in a hot and humid environment. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Mvskoke (Muscogee)\, Yamasee and Guale peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, their deep and sacred connection to these lands\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. We offer this land acknowledgement as the first of many steps to stand as an ally and amplify Indigenous voices. SUMMARY:Natchez Trace State Park\, Tennessee - Volunteer Vacations
DESCRIPTION:Under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal Program approximately 48\,000 acres of land were purchased in the area of the park. This purchase provided jobs for many people. Programs such as the Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration established many of the buildings still being used today and laid the foundation for what is now Natchez Trace State Park at the core of the large tract of public lands. \nThe park’s hiking trails\, range from a one-half mile up to 4.5 miles\, and a 40 mile overnight trail. The trails wind through the forest and fields and along the lakeshores and streams of Natchez Park. Visitors also enjoy the museum that features local and park history\, picnic facilities\, camping\, cabins and lodges\, boating and the park’s restaurant. \nAmerican Hiking Society volunteers will focus on re-routing a section of the 40 mile Red Leaves Backpacking Trail\, within the 48\,000 acre Natchez Trace State Park and Forest. Volunteers will learn about sustainable trail design\, trail maintenance\, and hone their trail building skills utilizing various tools including Pulaskis and Mcleouds. The new trail segment will be built near the scenic 58 acre Cub Creek Lake. Trail building each day will be moderate with hikes of less than one mile to the work site. Volunteers will have access to the parks fishing boats\, kayaks\, and pedal boats for afternoon relaxation. Also\, the 48\,000 acre recreation area boasts 4 lakes and nearly 50 miles of hiking trails\, and over 100 miles of multi-use trails. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Cherokee East\, Chickasaw\, Yuchi\, and Shawnee peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. AHS invites all volunteers to join us in our commitment to support and amplify the work of Indigenous communities as they work to dismantle the systems of oppression that these communities continue to face today.

SUMMARY:Mark Twain National Forest\, Missouri - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will be working to complete the Ozark Trail\, the Missouri Ozarks’ long distance hiking trail on the Mark Twain National Forest\, Eleven Point Ranger District. 1.7 miles of trail will be constructed using a combination of trail dozer and hand crew. The trail dozer will be operated by an experience US Forest Service equipment operator and the hand crew will be led by a US Forest Service trail leader. Volunteers will use hand tools such as hand saws\, Pulaskis\, field hoes\, McLeods\, shovels and rock bars to construct new trail design primarily for pedestrian use. The Banner Road Trailhead will be constructed to provide easy access to this new trail segment. The current trailhead is located on a rough\, minimally maintained Forest Service Road and will be decommissioned after the new trailhead is built. \nThe Ozark Trail is one of Missouri’s hidden treasures – extending from near Onondaga Cave State Park in Crawford County\, MO toward Arkansas\, the OT is nearly 400 miles long with 230 miles of connected thru-trail. 262 miles are designated National Recreation Trail. You can stand on Taum Sauk Mountain\, Missouri’s highest point\, visit Mina Sauk falls\, the state’s tallest wet-weather waterfall\, and take in the dramatic landscape of Missouri’s Ozarks. You can watch beavers build lodges\, see Missouri’s only wild horse herd\, hear an elk bugle\, travel through hardwood forests and near-vertical bluffs\, ford crystal-clear streams\, and pause on rocky balds with impressive views. These places are home to deer\, turkey\, bobcats\, bears\, and bald eagles. It’s all here in Missouri’s rugged backyard- the Ozark Trail. \nFor most of its length\, the trail is multi-use for hiking\, backpacking\, horseback riding and mountain biking. Motorized vehicles are prohibited on the entire trail and some land stewards restrict sections to foot-only traffic\, as noted on the section descriptions. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the (Osage)\, Očhéthi Šakówiŋ\, O-ga-xpa Ma-zhoⁿ (O-ga-xpa)\, Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo) and Kaskaskia peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. SUMMARY:Tonto National Forest\, Arizona - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Come help us build new trail to improve some of the most memorable hikes in Arizona! The Arizona National Scenic Trail is a continuous\, 800+ mile diverse and scenic trail across Arizona from Mexico to Utah. Along the way it takes hikers\, bikers and equestrians through a diverse landscape of deserts\, mountains canyons and communities and showcases the best of what the Grand Canyon State has to offer. The 17 miles that the AZT shares with the Highline National Recreation Trail is one of the most historic trail corridors in the Southwest. Here\, the pines reach to the sky and the vistas stretch out forever as the trail follows the base of the Mogollon Rim and climbs to the Colorado Plateau. For those who are familiar with this territory\, it can be as challenging as it is beautiful. Much of the trail is on old roads or historic ranch routes that were not designed with sustainability in mind. As a result\, much of the tread is badly eroded\, steep and choked with loose rock and debris. Creating a more sustainable alignment and user-friendly corridor is an ongoing battle for trail crews on planners alike. \nThe Tonto National Forest has launched a concerted effort to replace some of these badly eroded sections of the Highline with new\, sustainable tread – including approximately 1.2 miles on the AZT near Washington Park. Volunteers will be involved in all stages of construction\, to include brushing\, building tread\, small stone work projects and moving debris. The hike to and from the worksite will be between 1 and 3 miles each day. The Arizona Trail Association’s program prides itself on providing superior hospitality to its volunteers\, including excellent meals\, detailed training and beautiful camping locations. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Pueblos\, Ndee/Nnēē: (Western Apache)\, Hopitutskwa\, and Hohokam peoples past and present.

SUMMARY:Hungry Mother State Park\, Virginia - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Hungry Mother\, one of the original six Virginia State Parks\, has long been a favorite. It’s known for beautiful woodlands and a placid 108-acre lake in the heart of the mountains. The park has a sandy beach with a bathhouse\, boat rentals (canoe\, kayak\, paddle boats and paddleboards)\, a boat launch and a universally accessible fishing pier. Guests also enjoy campgrounds\, cabins\, yurts\, gift shops\, a visitor center\, a six-bedroom family lodge\, and hiking and biking trails. Raider’s Run Trail was historically used as a horseback riding trail and has been turned into a hiking/biking trail. Various sections of the trail need to be re-routed to make it more user friendly and sustainable. New trail will be built with a bench cut on moderately to steep slopes but will be laid out sustainably with water diversion features including sheet flow on the tread and out-slope and grade reversals. Most of the work will be spent bending\, shoveling\, picking\, chopping\, and/or sawing. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the ᏣᎳᎫᏪᏘᏱ Tsalaguwetiyi (Cherokee\, East) and S’atsoyaha (Yuchi) peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. SUMMARY:Adirondack Park\, New York - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Created in 1892 as one of the first Forever Wild Forest Preserves in the nation\, the Adirondack Park is a unique wilderness area. At 6 million acres\, it is the largest publicly protected area in the contiguous United States. The state of New York owns approximately 2.6 million acres\, while the remaining 3.4 million acres are devoted to forestry\, agriculture and open space recreation. The Adirondack Park is not a National Park – there’s no fee to enter and the park doesn’t close at night\, nor is it a state park\, a common misconception. It’s also the largest National Historic Landmark\, covering an area larger than Yellowstone\, Yosemite\, Grand Canyon\, Glacier\, and the Great Smokies National Parks combined. Champlain Area Trails has a number of new trails  that will be developed in Adirondack Park this year. Volunteers will work to establish and maintain these new trails by clearing the trail of branches\, brush\, and fallen logs plus doing some side-cuts to level the trail on hillsides. Volunteers may also assist with the installation of new bridges and boardwalks as needed throughout the week. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Kanienʼkehá꞉ka (Mohawk) and Ho-de-no-sau-nee-ga (Haudenosaunee) peoples past and present.

SUMMARY:Moab\, Utah - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Located in the heart of the Colorado Plateau\, the Moab Field Office encompasses 1.8 million acres of stunningly scenic canyon country. Carved by the Colorado and Green Rivers\, Moab’s public lands include a vast variety of arches\, natural bridges\, mesas\, and spires.  The Moab Field Office is a mecca for recreation\, including off-highway vehicles\, mountain biking\, climbing\, base jumping\, hiking\, horse-back riding\, and river rafting.  In addition to supporting millions of visitors and hundreds of recreation related jobs in the local communities\, Moab also supports a wide array of land uses such as oil and gas production\, mining\, and livestock grazing.  The Field Office is known for evidence of dinosaurs and features the Mill Canyon Interpretive Track Site and Bone Trail.  These canyonlands are home to many types of desert wildlife and the area supports a healthy population of big horn sheep\, and can provide great opportunities for wildlife viewing during the fall. On this trip\, American Hiking Society volunteers will spend a week working on popular hiking trails in the Moab area. Work may include brushing\, crib wall construction and step construction. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Núu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute) peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. SUMMARY:Appalachian National Scenic Trail\, Maine - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Help protect the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) and enjoy the rugged beauty of Maine’s 100-Mile Wilderness! On this project\, we will monitor and maintain the boundaries of the land protected for the Trail. This public land is the backbone of the largest natural corridor that remains east of the Mississippi River\, creating a haven and migration path for humans and animals alike. Maintaining the boundaries of this land helps to protect it from encroachments such as motorized vehicles and timber theft. Using a GPS\, map\, and compass\, the crew will follow the surveyed boundaries of the trail corridor. We will clear brush with loppers\, paint trees\, replace US Boundary signs\, and record the condition of metal survey markers\, called “monuments.” Each day\, we will duck into the woods just off the A.T.\, find the boundary\, and leap-frog each other as we move along. At the end of the day\, we’ll hike back on the A.T. and be amazed at how much ground we covered! Teams will maintain up to 1 mile of boundary line and hike 2 or more miles per day. Maine is especially wonderful this time of year. After experiencing the rugged beauty of the trail\, volunteers will enjoy the full-service Lily Bay State Park campground on the shores of Moosehead Lake. We hope you join us on this challenging and rewarding project. Volunteers like you are the heart and soul of the Appalachian Trail! \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Wabanaki (Dawnland Confederacy)\, Nanrantsouak and Abenaki / Abénaquis peoples past and present.

SUMMARY:Monongahela National Forest\, West Virginia - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Monongahela National Forest provides visitors with scenic vistas\, country roads\, flowing streams and abundant plant and animal life. It was established in 1920 and encompasses one of the most ecologically diverse areas in the United States. Elevations range from just under 1\,000 feet to 4\,863 feet above sea level. Monongahela National Forest is a working forest providing timber\, water\, grazing\, minerals and recreational opportunities. \nOn this trip\, volunteers will work on tread restoration\, building rolling dips\, and removing berm to out slope tread on segments of the Blue Bend Loop Trail located in the Big Draft Wilderness on the Monongahela National Forest. There are various segments of this trail that require work varying from less than 50 feet to several hundred yards. The project is within a Congressionally designated wilderness so use of hand tools required. Tools including Pulaskis\, fire rakes\, shovels\, rock bars\, adze hoe\, Mcloud\, soil tamper\, and gravel bags will be used and provided by the Forest Service. Forest Service staff will provide a safety briefing and training prior to crew engaging in work. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the S’atsoyaha (Yuchi) and Moneton peoples past and present. SUMMARY:Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge\, Wisconsin - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge is located in northern Wisconsin on the shore of Lake Superior. The refuge was established in 1999 in an effort to restore coaster brook trout\, a native trout that spawns in Whittlesey Creek and spends its adult life in Lake Superior. The Coaster Classroom Trail will be a new trail that winds its way up the small hillside near the coaster classroom interpretive center\, down through a small cattail wetland\, across a bridge over a stream\, and run adjacent to the clear waters of Whittlesey Creek. Volunteers will help prep the surface of the trail and unload rock over the trail bed. They will also construct a boardwalk over the wetland and a bridge that spans Little Whittlesey Creek. Total trail length will be 1/2 mile. A subsequent project will consist of maintenance of the boardwalk and gravel trail near the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. Volunteers will replace damaged boards and posts and groom the trail surface with rock. The trail is 1/2 mile long. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ and Anishinabewaki ᐊᓂᔑᓈᐯᐗᑭ peoples past and present. SUMMARY:Hogan and Luce Recreation Area\, Wyoming - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Join the Bureau of Land Management to maintain and establish a new trail up Bald Ridge Trail! This horseback riding and hiking trail winds for five miles through BLM-managed public lands and state land to Bald Ridge in the Shoshone National Forest. The elevation ranges from 4\,880′-8\,400′. Spectacular views of the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River to the west and of Heart Mountain to the east await you. Pronghorn\, mule deer\, moose\, elk\, and grizzly and black bears may be encountered along this trail. Waterfowl are often found at the lakes near the trailhead and soaring raptors are often sighted. \nThe trail is steep and arduous requiring good physical condition of both humans and horses. The trail is marked by trail signs\, and then rock cairns as it winds up Bald Ridge. The middle and upper portions are not marked or constructed; users must pick their own route up the mountain. Volunteers are needed to help maintain the current trail and establish a new defined trail up Bald Ridge. Work will include vegetation removal\, surface water control using water bars\, grade dips and ponding\, removal of roots\, stumps\, and rocks\, improving drainage\, fixing tread creep\, slough and berm work\, and signage and marker installations. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ\, Eastern Shoshone\, Cheyenne and Apsaalooké (Crow) peoples past and present. SUMMARY:Eagle Cap Wilderness\, Oregon - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Join the 2022 trip into the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest as we head for Standley Ridge nested high in the Eagle Cap Wilderness! We’ll depart from the Bear Wallow Trailhead and backpack into the Historic Standley Guard Station. Pack stock will carry all food and group gear\, giving us time for a 4.2-mile hike into base camp with 1\,000 ft of elevation gain. The trail provides spectacular views of the Bear Creek and Minam River drainages along with some of the high points of the Wallowa Mountains. Our camp for the week is near the Standley Guard Station Cabin. Work will include the restoration of braded trail sections and addressing incised trail tread with the installation of check dams\, drain dips and water bars. Some lighter trail maintenance (logout and bushing)\, campsite rehabilitation\, and a bit of sprucing up around the Standley Guard station may also be on the docket if time allows. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Nimiipuu (Nez Perce) and Cayuse\, Umatilla and Walla Walla peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. SUMMARY:Bitterroot National Forest\, Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness\, Montana - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:This project will take place in the heavily glaciated\, rugged peaks of the Bitterroot Mountains. Volunteers will be clearing with crosscut saws\, axes\, and handsaws as well as cleaning drains and improving trail tread. The Big Creek Trail #11 threads through a scenic Montana canyon and offers a pristine Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness experience. During the first half of the trip we will clear the Big Creek trail of fallen trees from milepost 9 to Packbox Pass at milepost 13.8. There will be an optional day off in the middle of the week during which volunteers may choose to swim\, hike\, or relax at camp. If there is time\, the latter half of the project will be spent scouting and clearing the Big Creek Divide Trail #306. With wayfinding assistance from the Forest Service\, work will entail bushwhacking\, flagging\, and clearing the switchback trail. The Big Creek Divide Trail is full of history and has not been cleared in several years; be prepared for strenuous work and bring your sense of adventure! \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Salish and Ktunaxa ɁamakɁis peoples past and present. SUMMARY:Chugach National Forest\, Alaska - Seward Ranger District - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Hope Point Trail and Gull Rock trail are both located in Hope\, Alaska along the Turnagain Arm. Gull Rock trail offers many scenic views as it parallels the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet (well above high tide). The trail passes through diverse vegetation: birch-aspen woods; alder-choked gullies; spruce forests; tundra with tiny spruce\, mosses\, and low cranberry bushes; hemlock forests with a carpet of moss. Many breaks in the woods offer views of Turnagain Arm\, the shoreline\, and Denali (on clear days). Hope Point trail begins in a birch/spruce forest with a thick under story of grass and devil’s club and continues with switch backs into alpine meadows lush with wildflowers. This trail has an elevation gain of over 2\,000 feet and offers fantastic views. \nVolunteers will camp in the Forest Service campground near the Gull Rock trail. This campground is about 2 miles beyond the main street in the town of Hope\, Alaska and overlooks the Turnagain Arm at the edge of a bluff. The project will take place on both the Hope Point Trail and the Gull Rock trail; both can be accessed from Porcupine campground. Hope Point was reconstructed in 2015 and needs maintenance to reestablish the backslope and ensure water is draining properly. Gull Rock has many roots in the trail from trees that are no longer alive and a lot of out sloped trail tread that is becoming increasingly more difficult to travel on. Work will be strenuous at times and involve hiking with tools\, heavy lifting\, and dirt work with pulaskis\, shovels\, and picks. We will maintain existing drainages by reestablishing and cleaning them out with hand tools\, chop roots out of the trail tread\, and repair and widen out sloped tread. Everyone will get dirty and tired\, and it will be a fun and productive week in an awe-inspiring location. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Dënéndeh and Dena’ina Ełnena peoples past and present.

SUMMARY:Seneca Creek Backcountry\, West Virginia - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Seneca Creek Backcountry offers hikers\, mountain bikers\, and horsemen diverse backcountry to explore. Over 60 miles of trails twist and turn through 19\,600 acres mountain vistas\, open fields\, along gurgling mountain streams and waterfalls\, and some of the best camping in West Virginia. Bear Hunter Trail is a steep trail that climbs up to Allegheny Mountain. The trail is well located but needs rebenching and drain installation work in order to keep the trail in the correct alignment and not sloughing-off the hillside. The approaches to a stream crossing could be greatly improved with drain installation to prevent sedimentation of small streams. This trail is an important connector trail in multiple backpacking loops in the premier Seneca Creek Backcountry. This project is part of a greater push to improve the trail systems in this backcountry area that serves as a destination for many backpackers. The 2021 AHS volunteer vacation took place on Judy Spring Trail which is also part of this sought after backpacking loop. American Hiking Society volunteers will return to this area in 2022 to continue improving access to this popular backcountry location! \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Massawomeck peoples past and present.

SUMMARY:Leadville National Fish Hatchery\, Colorado - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Leadville National Fish Hatchery (NFH)\, established in 1889\, is the second oldest Federally operated fish hatchery in existence today. American Hiking Society volunteers will work on several trail projects at the Leadville National Fish Hatchery. One project is to create 3/4 mile of new trail which would create a 2 mile loop between the Kearney Park Trail and the nature trail. The trail follows some old logging/mining roads and game trails. Volunteers will conduct handwork and some dry stacking of rocks for trail support\, but primarily it would be light trail clearing and delineation. If time allows\, volunteers will rehab/cleanup the ~5 miles of trails already existent on the facility. Most of the trails are already in decent shape\, but there are sections where dirt landing steps could be rebuilt\, delineation of trail\, and clearing of ankle twister rocks. There are also a few low bridges on the existing trail that will need to be repaired and rehabilitated. Please note that although the project itself does not involve strenuous tasks\, the project location is at over 10\,000 feet of altitude which makes physical activity significantly more strenuous. SUMMARY:Grayson Highlands State Park\, Virginia - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Near Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain\, Virginia’s two highest mountains\, Grayson Highlands offers scenic views of alpine-like peaks more than 5\,000 feet high. Facilities include a visitor center\, campgrounds\, and hiking trails leading to waterfalls and overlooks. The park provides year-round access to the Appalachian Trail and the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail. American Hiking Society volunteers will work on creating a new trail that connects the Visitor Center to Massie Gap\, which is needed to allow park visitors to access the high country when the parking at Massie Gap is at capacity and visitors are diverted to the nearest parking area at the Visitor Center\, just over a mile up the road. There is a trail system currently in place for this\, but the Big Pinnacle trail from Twin Pinnacles to Massie Gap was poorly designed along the fall line\, and is therefore unsustainable and too steep for many park visitors to successfully navigate. The new 0.85 mile trail will skirt the side slope of Haw Orchard Mountain through birch groves\, boulder fields and spruce stands\, completely avoiding the heavily used Twin Pinnacles Trail. Some of the trail will be installed mechanically\, but portions will require dirt or rock work by hand. If the new trail is completed\, there is additional rock work needed on Listening Rock\, another high elevation trail in the same area of the park. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the ᏣᎳᎫᏪᏘᏱ Tsalaguwetiyi (Cherokee\, East)\, S’atsoyaha (Yuchi) and Moneton peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. SUMMARY:Letchworth State Park\, New York - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Letchworth State Park\, renowned as the “Grand Canyon of the East\,” is one of the most scenically magnificent areas in the eastern U.S. The Genesee River roars through the gorge over three major waterfalls between cliffs–as high as 600 feet in some places–surrounded by lush forests. Hikers can choose among 66 miles of hiking trails. Trails are also available for horseback riding\, biking\, snowmobiling\, and cross-country skiing. Letchworth offers nature\, history and performing arts programs\, guided walks\, tours\, a summer lecture series\, whitewater rafting\, kayaking\, a pool for swimming and hot air ballooning. \nThe Letchworth Branch Trail of the Finger Lakes Trail System is a 27-mile-long pathway along the Genesee River as it passes through the Letchworth Gorge. This trail is heavily used by hikers\, runners\, and visitors to the area as it traverses several overlooks of the gorge and its three waterfalls. Much of the trail work will be drainage work\, reroutes and elevating the trail in the most heavily used sections of the trail system. There may be some construction involving the replacement of two lean-to roofs. This process will entail the removal of roofing shingles\, repairs to the wood structure of the roof and the installation of a metal roof. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Onöndowa’ga:’ (Seneca) and Ho-de-no-sau-nee-ga (Haudenosaunee) peoples past and present.

SUMMARY:Kenai National Wildlife Refuge\, Alaska - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge\, often called “Alaska in miniature”\, is home to a wide diversity of wildlife including moose\, eagles\, brown and black bears\, lynx\, wolves and trumpeter swans. Biodiversity is unusually high for this latitude because of the juxtaposition of two biomes on the Kenai Peninsula:  the northern fringe of the Sitka spruce-dominated (Picea sitchensis) coastal rainforest on the eastern flank of the Kenai Mountains\, and the western-most reach of boreal forest in North America on the western slope of the Kenai Mountains.  Elevations range from 6\,600 feet (Mt. Truuli) to sea level where the refuge extends to Chickaloon Flats in Turnagain Arm. \nAmerican Hiking Society Volunteers will work on establishing a connecting trail between Vista Trail and Skilak Lookout Trail. The total distance between the two trails is roughly 2 miles. The crew would be working from the top of Vista Trail clearing new corridor and digging new tread as they begin to start the work towards Skilak Lookout Trail. Vista Trail is 1.5 miles one way hiking to the end of the trail and then starting work from there. With views of Skilak Lake all along the trail it makes for a beautiful hike. Base camp will be established in Upper Skilak Campground where the trail starts out of. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Dënéndeh and Dena’ina Ełnena peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. SUMMARY:San Juan Islands National Monument\, Washington - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Situated in the northern reaches of Washington State’s Puget Sound\, the San Juan Islands are a uniquely beautiful archipelago of over 450 islands\, rocks\, and pinnacles. The new San Juan Islands National Monument encompasses approximately 1\,000 acres of land spread across many of these rocks and islands and managed by the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management. Drawing visitors from around the world\, this is a landscape of unmatched contrasts\, where forests seem to spring from gray rock and distant\, snow-capped peaks provide the backdrop for sandy beaches. The San Juan Islands National Monument is a trove of scientific and historic treasures\, a refuge for an array of wildlife\, and a classroom for generations of Americans. \nOn this trip\, American Hiking Society volunteers will perform trail maintenance\, noxious weeds eradication and recreation site maintenance. The crew will be transported to and from base camp to the work areas via carpools and or boat with minimal hiking involved. Dependent on the weather\, projects may be performed on outer islands. Volunteers will be engaged with a handful of other agency representatives in the SJI and also working outside of BLM lands. It takes an island and we all share when we can! \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Coast Salish peoples past and present.

SUMMARY:Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge\, Kansas - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge is one in a system of over 550 refuges administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and dedicated to the preservation and conservation of wildlife. The Refuge is named after the Marais des Cygnes River which runs through the middle of the refuge and is the dominant natural feature of the region. The name\, Marais des Cygnes\, comes from the French language and means Marsh of the Swans. It is presumed that trumpeter swans\, which were historically common in the Midwest\, used the wetlands adjacent to the Marais des Cygnes River during spring and fall migration. \nThe Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge contains 5 trails that are available for public use. The Mosaic Trail resides within the south-eastern portion of the refuge and was originally designed as a loop trail (1.2 miles). Previous management efforts had been made to re-design it; however\, this effort was not completed\, and the trail has been neglected for several years. In the scope of this project\, the crew will work on rehabilitating the trail and re-constructing trail pathway boundaries and bridges. This work may include\, but is not limited to; limbing\, string trimming\, leveling\, hauling and distribution of gravel\, and hammering/drilling. Nearby resides a fishing access area that has suffered extreme erosion and damage. In this access area\, there is a metal staircase that has fallen onto the shoreline and the access route has now become hazardous for visitors and staff. In the scope of this project\, the crew will work to remove these hazardous structures and will reconstruct the trail and a new staircase to allow access to the Marais des Cygnes River for recreational shoreline fishing. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the ?????? ???? ???? ??^??^(Osage)\, Očhéthi Šakówiŋ\, Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo) and Kaskaskia peoples past and present.

SUMMARY:Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area\, Tennessee - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Encompassing 125\,000 acres of the Cumberland Plateau\, Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area protects the free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and its tributaries. The area boasts miles of scenic gorges and sandstone bluffs\, is rich with natural and historic features and has been developed to provide visitors with a wide range of outdoor recreational activities. There are five bridges in the Jakes Place (Historic) landscape which were built several years ago\, and they are in need of being removed and rebuilt. American Hiking Society volunteers will work on replacing one of these bridges during your week of service. There are no buildings left standing at Jakes Place other than the remnants of an old fire place. There are three streams that meet at the Jakes Place to form the beginning of Station Camp Creek. With the beginning of summer the area is abundant with wildlife\, wildflowers\, birds and lush green trees. It is an area for foot traffic only and it is truly a peaceful area to visit\, even if only for one day. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the ᏣᎳᎫᏪᏘᏱ Tsalaguwetiyi (Cherokee\, East)\, S’atsoyaha (Yuchi)\, Shawandasse Tula and (Shawanwaki/Shawnee)peoples past and present. SUMMARY:Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore\, Michigan - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Beaver Basin Wilderness includes 13 miles of stunning Lake Superior shoreline from Spray Falls on the west to Sevenmile Creek on the east. The Beaver Basin Wilderness offers opportunities for quiet\, solitude\, wilderness recreation\, and spiritual renewal. The wilderness zone includes 8.4 miles of the North Country National Scenic Trail and 8.5 miles of connector trails as well as six backcountry campsites. American Hiking Society Volunteers will assist with the annual trail clearance project to clear and rehab trails\, remove and replace boardwalks\, and build different types of trail assets. Hand tools such as shovels\, loppers\, grub hoes\, and other tools will be used. The goal is to open up and get the trails in shape for the summer hiking season. Unlike any other place on Lake Superior\, Pictured Rocks offers the opportunity to explore miles of pristine beaches\, hike nearly 100 miles of trails\, view towering sandstone cliffs\, and experience the serenity of northern woodlands. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ and Anishinabewaki ᐊᓂᔑᓈᐯᐗᑭ peoples past and present. SUMMARY:Trinidad Coastal Land Trust\, California - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will work with trail supervisors on the Tepona Point Overlook trail\, located along Scenic Drive on the stunning Trinidad coastline in northern California\, where the redwoods meet the Pacific Ocean. This staircase trail provides public access to viewing the iconic offshore rocks of the California Coastal National Monument\, glimpses of migrating grey whales\, and plentiful seabirds. Although trail distances are only a few 100 yards\, the terrain is very sloped as we will be working along a coastal bluff. Work will include replacing a dilapidated staircase with a stretch of crib steps\, which will consist of demolishing the existing stairs\, removing vegetation\, installing crib steps and a safety railing\, and removing invasive plants. Trail work will include manual lifting of work materials (lumber\, gravel\, and tools)\, trail step construction\, filling in cribs with gravel\, and clearing brush and ivy. The summer weather is moderate and enjoyable. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Resighini Rancheria\, Yurok Tribe\, Trinidad Rancheria\, and Big Lagoon Rancheria peoples past and present. We honor the land itself\, the Indigenous communities who have stewarded this land for generations\, and those who continue to steward these lands today. SUMMARY:North Country National Scenic Trail\, Minnesota - Volunteer Vacations 2022
DESCRIPTION:From bird watching to backpacking\, the North Country National Scenic Trail provides visitors an opportunity to enjoy many rewarding experiences as it winds across eight northern states. The North County National Scenic Trail connects a host of natural\, historic\, and cultural areas from valleys to hilltops\, cities to small towns\, and everything in between. \nJoin the North County Trail Association and help clear and construct a new 5-mile segment of the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT) on both public and private lands. The work will include clearing the corridor using hand tools\, power tools\, and a brush mower followed by constructing trail tread using hand tools. This new segment will replace a road walk on the NCT’s Arrowhead Re-route in between the Chippewa National Forest and Grand Rapids\, MN. The landscape the project traverses includes Tioga Mine pit lake\, the southern most iron mine on the Mesabi Range. The NCT will overlook the pit lake while passing through the Tioga Recreation Area\, a world class mountain bike trail facility. The trail will also pass by historic mine sites\, mine tailings piles\, and along the edge of a private maple syrup operation. \nAHS acknowledges with gratitude that this project takes place on the traditional lands of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ\, Mdewakanton\, and Anishinabewaki ᐊᓂᔑᓈᐯᐗᑭ peoples past and present.
