SUMMARY:Hungry Mother State Park
DESCRIPTION:We will be hand building a section of new trail which will eventually wind its way over and meet up with Clyburn Ridge Loop Trail. The trail will be laid out on an old road bed and then will meander through a steeply forested area along ridges and sideslopes. All work will be done by hand\, no mechanized labor will be used. Depending on length of trail laid\, there will be a possibility of crew assisting with laying out and designing additional trail. All trail laid will include removing duff layer\, angling trail correctly along with side slope installed correctly\, installing knicks\, rolling grade dips\, and grade reversals\, armoring of creeks\, and installing other sustainable trail features.

SUMMARY:Appalachian Trail
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will be maintaining the surveyed boundary lines of the corridor of National Park Service lands the Appalachian Trail traverses. Maintaining the boundaries of public land along the Trail helps preserve the primitive experience that Appalachian Trail hikers seek Using survey maps and hand-held compasses\, the crew will maintain the boundaries of NPS lands immersed in early fall foliage. Work involves bushwhacking along the boundary and using hand-held saws and loppers to clear a line of site between survey markers as well as repainting yellow blazes and replacing US Boundary signs. Volunteers will become very familiar with both the footpath and the land surrounding a rugged\, beautiful and remote Gulf Hagas portion of the Appalachian Trail in Maine. A day’s work involves hiking on the trail to the corridor near the work site\, bushwhacking to the boundary line\, working along the boundary line and then bushwhacking and hiking back – we don’t stay in the same place long!

SUMMARY:Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:The A-B Wilderness Foundation invites you to spend a week with us camping out in the backcountry and working on various projects benefiting the trails in the heart of the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area of Montana. Far up the Boulder River which bisects the Absaroka and Beartooth ranges we will work on a network of trails rising out of the Fourmile Creek area. The Fourmile and Meatrack trails that lead up to Silver Pass and Silver Lake branch out from the meadows where we will camp\, and the first mile of each of them needs a combination of restoration and trail work. We will pull non-native houndstongue\, construct water bars\, build check dams and retaining walls out of stone and wood; and finish everything off by brushing the corridor. This is all-around quite strenuous work\, as we will be working with stone\, locally sourced logs\, and standard trail tools (shovels\, pulaskis\, picks\, crosscut saws). \nOur trip starts at the Frosty Freeze in Big Timber\, MT. From there we will carpool/caravan up the Main Boulder River to the Fourmile Trailhead. Only vehicles with higher clearance are recommended on this road. The first and last night of the trip\, the crew will camp at the Fourmile Trailhead. On Wednesday morning our crew will hike in the 5 miles to basecamp and work out of there for the rest of the week. The Backcountry Horsemen will carry in our heavy stuff—food\, tools\, tents\, etc.—so volunteers only need to carry a day pack with their clothes and personal items.

SUMMARY:Bob Marshall Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:Come join fellow stewards in working in the most pristine Wilderness areas in the lower 48. The Iconic Bob Marshall Wilderness is the crown jewel of the Rocky Mountains. And all good things are worth some effort! The same goes for the hike into base camp for this project. The hike begins at Owl Creek trailhead and hikes up\, up\, and over pendant pass\, on the Swan Crest. After the pass\, it’s downhill to basecamp near Pendant camp. This remote trail needs some helping hands improve the trail bed (tread) and build a new turnpike. The views will be well worth the effort! The Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation provides a crew leader\, tools and PPE\, food\, pack support and all the group gear. You just need to bring your personal backpacking equipment and a ‘can do’ attitude.

SUMMARY:Bitterroot National Forest
DESCRIPTION:Big Creek Canyon has long been a major thoroughfare and destination for Native American Indians\, trappers\, and mountain travelers in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. The trail threads through a beautiful glacier-carved canyon and provides a perfect backdrop for a wilderness experience. With basecamp at the beautiful Big Creek Lake\, SBFC Staff\, Interns and AHS Volunteers will use crosscuts and single-bit axes to clear this well-used trail around the lake to the famous Packbox Pass. Once this work is complete\, the crew will work on clearing the South Fork of Big Creek trail towards another string of glacial lakes. Pack support will be provided to carry group gear\, food\, and tools.

SUMMARY:Eagle Cap Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:We’ll kick our trip off with a brief project overview at the Forest Service Barn in Enterprise\, followed by dinner at a local brew pub. There are several lodging options in town\, or you can pitch a tent at the Forest Service compound. Our base camp will be located on Huckleberry Mountain; work sites will include locations on those parts of trails 1667\, 1689 and 1665 that primarily access McCubbin Basin and the headwaters of Goat Creek. Our goal for the week will be to improve trail access and reduce sedimentation in streams. Specific projects will vary throughout the week and will include building and maintaining erosion control structures\, trail clearing (with crosscut saws)\, and brushing. Expect to use a variety of primitive tools\, ranging from bow saws & crosscuts for log-out to shovels and pulaskis for tread maintenance and restoration. Note that this is an arduous project in a spectacular backcountry setting—be prepared to earn your meals!

SUMMARY:Dolly Sods Wilderness\, Monongahela National Forest
DESCRIPTION:Dolly Sods Wilderness is a gem of the Monongahela National Forest. Although we do not have accurate visitation estimates\, it can be confidently said that Dolly Sods is one of the most visited Wilderness areas in the Eastern United States. For all the media attention these trails get\, they do not receive as much support for maintenance. This project helps to remedy that by consisting of multiple small projects all geared toward making the trails more sustainable. Work may include installing drainage features\, consolidating user-created trails\, and brushing overgrown trails. Participants are sure to learn or improve a diversity of skills while seeing an equal diversity of ecosystems this Wilderness is famous for!

SUMMARY:Custer Gallatin National Forest
DESCRIPTION:This project consists of general trail clearing and maintenance on trails in the Clark’s Fork River drainage and the beartooth plateau on the Custer Gallatin National Forest in the Cooke City\, MT area. Trail clearing and maintenance includes clearing downed trees across trails\, cleaning of water bars\, and removing trailside brush using primitive tools such as crosscut saws\, axes\, shovels\, pulaski’s\, and loppers. Maintenance may also include some work repairing or installing new trail structures such as turnpikes or puncheons. Work will consist of day trips that involve hiking 6 to 10 miles per day while conducting trail work. Volunteer crews will be supervised and will work directly with some of the district’s trail crew. Most of this project work will occur within the picturesque Absaroka Beartooth-Wilderness. Volunteers would stay at the Forest Service Cooke City work station\, a rustic log cabin located 2 miles from Cooke City\, MT. Shower and laundry facilities are available. Goal for week will be to clear out as many miles of trails as possible in this area that contains more than 50 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails as they emerge from the winters snow pack.

SUMMARY:California Coastal National Monument\, Trinidad Coastline
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will work on two public trails to spectacular beaches along the Trinidad coastline in northern California\, where the redwoods meet the Pacific Ocean. These are amazing ocean front public use areas that highlight the California Coastal National Monument’s offshore rocks and islands\, coastal forests\, sand bluffs and shoreline tidepools. We will repair and replace trail steps on the Luffenholtz State Beach park trails and the nearby Baker Beach public trails. Both areas are used by the pubic to reach the beach from the parking area trail heads. These trails offer scenic vistas and access to surf fishing and tidepool exploring. Last year’s volunteers loved their experience here. Trail distances are less than one mile from trail head downhill to the beach\, but the terrain can be moderately difficult hiking on unleveled terrain. Work will include repair and replacement of existing trail steps\, installation of new crib steps\, trail clearing\, trail digging and removal of invasive plants. Trail work will also include manual moving of work materials (lumber\, beach boulders\, gravel\, logs)\, trail step construction\, digging trail drainage / water bars\, and clearing brush and ivy. The nearby group campsite is at Patricks Point State Park and includes warm showers and flush-toilet restrooms. Our small ‘city’ of Trinidad is recognized as a CA Coastal National Monument Gateway Community for its scenic vistas and community support of coastal conservation. The nearby city of Arcata\, a college town home to Humboldt State University\, has a downtown plaza and many social events.

Nine+ miles of established hiking trails need maintenance after two years of massive flood damage. In addition\, there are three new trails ready for development. New trails are following old logging trails and deer paths; while the ‘trail’ is naturally marked at this point\, there will be heavy work involved in clearing brush and trees. Established trails needing maintenance will involve reshaping in some instances and clearing debris in others. Lodging for the week will be in historic buildings\, although modern plumbing has been added! One goal for the week will be to rejuvenate the existing trails so that guests may enjoy the natural beauty of Norskedalen’s setting. A second goal will be to clear and establish at least one of the three trails marked for new use. \nTo get a wonderful history lesson about Norskedalen and see the beautiful scenery\, check out this video.

SUMMARY:Tom's Run Preserve
DESCRIPTION:This project will expand the public hiking trails within Elizabeth’s Woods\, a mature hardwood forest in a 325-acre conserved natural area called Tom’s Run Preserve — owned and managed by West Virginia Land Trust. Located on the outskirts of Morgantown\, the state’s most rapidly growing metropolitan area\, the preserve hosts over 2 miles of wooded hiking trails\, and offers tremendous potential as a public greenspace for non-motorized outdoor recreation. Trails in Elizabeth’s Woods wind through a sloping wooded area and are built on a mostly soil base using hand tools (shovels\, mattocks\, pulaskis\, hoes\, and rakes). Some areas have rocks which may need moving or used to build berms\, waterbars\, or other trail features. There may be some underbrush and fallen branches to be cleared during construction requiring a handsaw (WVLT staff will have a chainsaw available as needed. The trail work for the project was designed by Rick Landenberger – WV Land Trust’s Science and Land Management Specialist\, and a research assistant professor of geography at West Virginia University – who will provide oversight and assistance for the trail crew\, as well as instruction in conservation trail building techniques. The crew’s cabin is at a campground just a short drive away\, and volunteers will be transported via van to the site each day. WV Land Trust will lead a mid-week group excursion to beautiful Davis\, WV\, and offer free participation in the annual Cheat River Float trip on Saturday\, June 8th (canoe/kayak & equipment rentals available for a fee). It’ll be great week in the beautiful mountains of West Virginia\, developing a publicly accessible preserve for high-quality community recreation\, and playing a bit\, too.

SUMMARY:Chugach National Forest
DESCRIPTION:Invasive weed control is a vital and ongoing effort on the Chugach National Forest! We have relatively few infestations\, thus our work in controlling weeds has a huge impact. Volunteers will be traveling via train (no additional fee) to Spencer Glacier and Lake area to control dandelions and other non-natives along trails and developed sites. Work will consist of a 4-mile hike with 1\,500′ elevation gain. The crew will stay at Spencer until Wednesday before departing to camp at Porcupine Campground in Hope\, AK to control non-native species along Hope Point or Gull Rock Trail. Hope Point Trail is extremely steep and climbs approximately 3\,500′ in about 2 miles. The group will also control European bird cherry in the town of Hope.

SUMMARY:Makoshika State Park
DESCRIPTION:Makoshika State Park is Montana’s largest state park as it totals almost 12\,000 acres in size. The park has 11 designated trails\, visitor center\, campground\, PDGA disc golf course\, archery range\, pavilion for rent\, and outdoor amphitheater that seats over 200 people. The park receives almost 100\,000 visitors a year and in 2017 won the USA Today Best Montana Attraction award. One of the park’s main attractions is dinosaurs. Over 10 different species of dinosaur fossils have been found in the park. The visitor center also has a paleontology lab in the basement. The trail crew will be instrumental in helping with our partnership trail. The Buccaneer Trail connects the state park to the community college and travels over a BLM easement. This one mile trail needs some repairs and the BLM portion of the trail needs to be established. This trail work should not take more than two days. The other two days of work will include repairing the 1/2 mile Switchback Trail and Hungry Joe Trailhead. Tools used for the project will include Pulaski’s\, McLeod’s\, and shovels.

SUMMARY:Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness\, Superior National Forest
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will help maintain sections of the “Kek” that are in dire need of basic maintenance work because of prior windstorms that severely damaged the trail. This entails using hand tools to remove blowdowns and clear brush from the trail corridor. We will be working on the easternmost 15 miles of the “Kek” within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the worksite will be very remote. The most difficult tasks will be 1) portaging 9 times on the way in/out and 2) doing the clearing work. Portaging is the act of carrying all your personal gear\, some of the group gear\, plus the canoes and tools over rough trails in between the lakes. This is often very difficult for folks unused to carrying heavy loads over uneven terrain.

SUMMARY:Stanislaus National Forest
DESCRIPTION:In 2013\, the catastrophic Rim Fire burned over 257\,000 acres of the Forest\, including over 20 miles of hiking trails and the need to plant over 7.5 million trees. We are in the forth year of the recovery process and need help with trail reconstruction including replacing features like water bars\, steps\, and in many cases re-benching the trails. Erosion\, rock slides\, noxious weeds\, and downed trees are impacting the integrity and use of the trails and need to be removed or utilized in the repair work. We are starting with our most popular hiking\, backpacking\, and equestrian trails in the community of Groveland and on the Groveland District. These trails follow the majestic Tuolumne Wild and Scenic River. We will spend days conducting trail repairs\, preparing the land for planting trees and\, if water flow and levels cooperate\, spend one day rafting down either the class IV+ Tuolumne Wild & Scenic River or the lazy Merced Wild & Scenic River in Yosemite Valley. We’ll travel by van to the trailhead and hike to the sites. We will be transported by van to the put-in site and picked up at the take-out site on the river day. US Forest Service River Patrol Rangers and partners will lead the river trip and Groveland Recreation Staff and partners such as the Groveland Trail Heads will lead the trail and tree planting work. All river gear will be provided.

SUMMARY:Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument
DESCRIPTION:This project will help improve three trails (Mt. Trumbull\, Nampaweap\, Mt. Logan) within a 10 mile area. The Mt. Trumbull and Mt. Logan trails are in designated Wilderness Areas. These trails would likely receive more visitors if the trails were in better condition. Volunteers would help improve outstanding recreation opportunities on these two trails by moving small blown down trees from a recent wildfire and brushing back vegetation overgrowth on the trail. The Mt. Logan Overlook trail would be especially spectacular as it leads to a natural amphitheater of red and yellow limestone. This has been inaccessible for years due to poor trail maintenance. The Nampaweap Trail is in fairly good condition\, but would involve some surface re-contouring and cutting back vegetation near panels of Native American rock writing. The tools to be used would be hand tools\, such as a: pulaski\, mcleod\, shovel\, rake\, brush trimmers and clippers\, wheel barrows\, and may include cross-cut saws. The overall goal for the week would be to open these areas to more visitors to enjoy and experience hiking in the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument. This project would come on the heels of completing new trailheads at each site.

SUMMARY:Coronado National Forest\, Arizona National Scenic Trail
DESCRIPTION:The Arizona National Scenic trail travels 800 miles across the state of Arizona between the Mexican border and Utah. It highlights the diversity of wild landscapes in Arizona from the iconic Sonoran desert to deep ponderosa forests. This project is taking place on the Coronado National Forest\, in the Canelo Hills of southern Arizona. The Canelo Hills West passage of the trail is the second passage north of the border and crosses low\, grassy hills between the Huachuca and Santa Rita Mountains from Parker Canyon Lake to Canelo Pass. Our project involves constructing new trail to replace legacy trail and forest roads that have been in this area for decades. One of the Arizona Trail Association’s main goals in recent years has been to get the trail off of old roads and two track wherever possible\, and (pending clearances) this area holds a great opportunity to move on that goal. Tasks include clearing vegetation\, benching and digging trail tread\, small rock work projects and removing debris. The hike to and from the worksite will be between 3 and 5 miles each day over rolling hills.

SUMMARY:Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:This trip has been CONFIRMED!  Chase those winter blues away in sunny Florida\, where the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area needs your help now more than ever! \nThe Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area is the BLM’s most easterly unit of the National Conservation Lands. The site\, known for its namesake lighthouse\, was designated by congress in 2008 for the protection and enhancement of various resources – including recreation. The 120-acre site is located in the highly urbanized south Florida Atlantic coastline\, just 1/4 mile from the Atlantic Ocean. The site itself is visited by over 100\,000 people each year to engage in everything from fishing to cultural appreciation. The main objective of this project is to extend the site’s two trails. The South Trail\, created almost two years ago\, has potential for an extra loop. This section will connect the Natural Area to our office and future interpretive site. The North Trail is a paved ADA concrete path leading to a boardwalk that dead-ends at a pavilion in the mangrove lagoon. We would like to have another trail on the north side of the property going through a different habitat: pine scrub. Both projects would involve clearing vegetation for a 64in trail. The total length of the combined new trails would be less than 2 miles.
