DESCRIPTION:As trails within Hungry Mother State Park see increased usage\, it’s crucial to ensure trails are sustainable to meet this increased demand. Volunteers will install rock armoring in areas that currently have drainage issues\, adding knicks and rolling grade dips\, clearing the corridor\, out-slop and deberming the trail. SUMMARY:Philmont Scout Ranch
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION FOR THIS TRIP IS CLOSED \nSpend a week as a part of Philmont’s Conservation Department\, and assist with a new trail construction project on Cimarroncito Peak (10\,475 feet). This project is full-bench trail construction with hand tools\, including opportunities for rock wall construction and rigging. Volunteers will learn about multi-use trail construction in a remote\, backcountry setting. Huge views of New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo mountains and its northeastern highlands abound. \nA few of our original trip details have changed due to access issues caused by the Ute Park Fire.  We are still working on a new trail in the vicinity of Cimarroncito Peak.  We are just working on the lower end of it\, near Cyphers Mine.  This trail is essential to our operations in 2019.  It will provide access around the burned area for crews hiking into Sawmill Camp. \nThis is a rare opportunity to experience Philmont’s autumn grandeur.  All are welcome on this adventure in Scouting Paradise. \nPlease Note: All volunteers will be required to complete parts A and B of the Annual Health and Medical Record\,  This allows for appropriate care to be delivered by Philmont’s resident emergency responders in the event of an accident or other medical emergency. All volunteers must also complete BSA Youth Protection training through the website\, https://my.scouting.org/. Volunteers should create a user a account\, complete the training\, and show their printed certificate upon arrival.  Training is free and should take no more than a half hour to complete. \nThis trip will be hosted and crew led by Boy Scouts of America.

SUMMARY:Coconino National Forest
DESCRIPTION:This project will be on Passage 29 of the Arizona National Scenic Trail which travels 30+ miles on the forested Colorado Plateau. This isn’t the desert many people imagine when they think of Arizona\, but instead a vast Ponderosa woodland\, rich with wildlife and human history. Unfortunately\, about 18 miles of this passage currently lay on roadway. The USFS Mogollon Rim Ranger District has launched a concerted effort to remove the trail from roadway and construct new trail to National Scenic Trail standards. This project will be creating new single-track through the forest canopy\, across meadows and stretches of chaparral. It may include brushing\, tread work\, small stone work projects and moving debris. The hike to and from the worksite will be between 1 and 4 miles each day. \nThis trip is hosted and crew led by the Arizona Trail Association.

SUMMARY:Appalachian National Scenic Trail
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION FOR THIS TRIP IS CLOSED \nCome maintain the surveyed boundary lines of the corridor of National Park Service lands surrounding the Appalachian Trail!  Maintaining these boundaries helps to preserve the primitive experience that Appalachian Trail hikers seek and helps to protect this land from encroachments such as timber theft. Using survey maps and hand-held compasses\, the crew will bushwhack along the surveyed boundaries of NPS lands while immersed in early fall foliage. Volunteers use hand-held saws and loppers to clear a line of site between survey markers repaint yellow blazes with tree-marking paint and replace US Boundary signs along the way. The crew will become very familiar with both the footpath and the land surrounding a rugged\, beautiful and remote Gulf Hagas portion of the Appalachian Trail in Maine. A day’s work involves hiking on the trail to the corridor near the work site in a small group of 1-3 other volunteers and an ATC staff member or long-term Maine Appalachian Trail Club volunteer\, bushwhacking to the boundary line\, working along it and then bushwhacking and hiking back – we don’t stay in the same place long! Small groups will maintain about 1 mile of boundary line per day and hike 2+ miles to and from the work site each day. This is a great project for folks who want to be moving through the woods all day! \nThis trip is hosted and crew led by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.

SUMMARY:Punchbowl Falls Oregons Hood River Valley
DESCRIPTION:Punchbowl Falls County Park\, located on the West Fork of the Hood River\, near Dee\, was acquired from a private timber company by the Western Rivers Conservancy just a few years ago\, and finally came into public ownership in 2015 when Hood River County received a state grant to transfer the land from the conservancy. Trailkeepers of Oregon (TKO) has since been busy constructing a new loop trail geared toward families and casual hikers looking for an easy stroll with a lot of scenery. Next Fall will be the time to turn to the trail leading down to the confluence of the West Fork and main Hood Rivers. New trail development will be underway – brushing\, duffing and building up trail tread to construct the new connection to this special place. \nMeet the Crew Leader for this trip.

SUMMARY:Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area
DESCRIPTION:The Boulder River drains the geographic heart of Montana’s 944\,000 acre Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area. A rugged dirt road that runs alongside it provides access to some of the wildest country in the entire wilderness\, including the ghost town of Independence\, the famed Lake Plateau\, Silver Lake\, and famous trout fishing. From our basecamp at Lake Kathleen\, five miles up the E. Fork Trail\, our group will do a wide variety of trailwork—improving and widening the existing trail\, getting rid of invasive weeds clearing trees\, and most of all cleaning and installing drainage structures (known as ‘waterbars’.  We will use all manner of trail tools\, such as Pulaskis\, cross-cut saws\, rakes\, and loppers. In general the work can be anywhere from moderate to quite strenuous in nature. We will be working between 8000 and 9000 feet in elevation. Each morning we will hike out from our camp at Lake Kathleen a mile or more to work. There are a couple of significant creek crossings (below the knees) that must be managed each way to work. All tools and personal protective equipment will be provided by the ABWF and the Forest Service. The trip will be led by a Trail Crew leader provided by the ABWF. This person is trained in Wilderness Medicine (First Responder)\, Leave no Trace principles\, and has extensive training and experience in trail building and maintenance. Their job is to facilitate a fun and safe volunteer experience for you. With your help\, they will make sure meals are prepared and that you are well fed\, and will teach you more about the local area\, flora and fauna\, and particularly about the Wilderness and issues facing our public lands. On every project\, we also work alongside one or more Forest Service trail crew leaders who will help supervise the technical aspects of the work at hand. The ABWF & Forest Service will have emergency communication devices available. This is grizzly country\, and while trip leaders will be equipped with canisters of bear repellent\, volunteers may want to bring their own bear spray for protection. \nThis trip is hosted and crew led by the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Foundation.

SUMMARY:Eldorado National Forest
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will spend the week working on trails and campsites around the 4th of July lake.  Volunteers will be falling hazardous trees and installing sign posts at the designated campsites. Spur trails to the new campsites will  be established and decommissioned campsites will be restored. Volunteers will also do brushing and tread work on the Tahoe Yosemite trail. This will include installing water bars and checks. Trail reroutes may be necessary. Tools being used will include shovels\, post hole diggers\, pulaskis\, mclouds\, mattix\, crosscut saw\, axes\, wedges\, pruning shears\, GPS units\, inclinometers\, tape measures\, hand saws\, and a rock bar. The goal is to redistribute the designated camping sites at 4th of July Lake to better the wilderness experience at the lake. Another goal is to mitigate the effects of water eroding the trail and clearing the brush back from the sides of the trail to enhance the hiking experience on the trail. \nMeet the Crew Leader for this trip.

DESCRIPTION:The McKinley Bar Trail\, near the end of the Denali Park Road\, takes hikers from Wonder Lake to the McKinley River and the foothills of the Alaska Range. The 2-mile trail offers spectacular views of Denali and the Alaska Range and takes hikers through open tundra\, spruce forest\, and across several small streams. The work here is physical and rewarding! Trail workers will hike to the work site to perform maintenance duties that include replacing and installing new boardwalk\, constructing turnpike\, and tread repair. SUMMARY:Eagle Cap Wilderness\, Wallowa–Whitman National Forest
DESCRIPTION:Join our 2018 adventure in the Eagle Cap Wilderness near the headwaters of the East Eagle Creek and beneath the shoulders of Eagle Cap peak itself. We’ll kick our trip off with a brief project overview at the Halfway\, OR Ranger District office\, followed by dinner out on the town. There are several lodging options in town\, or you can pitch a tent at the Forest Service compound. Our base camp will be located at the junction of the East Eagle and Hidden Lake trails; work sites will range from the East Eagle drainage to Hidden & Moon Lakes. Our goal for the week will be to improve trail conditions for the 1.8 miles between camp and Hidden Lake. Specific projects will vary throughout the week and will include building and maintaining erosion control structures\, trail clearing (with crosscut saws!) and brushing\, as well as restoring vegetation in sections of braided trails. Expect to use a variety of primitive tools\, ranging from bow saws & crosscuts for log-out to shovels and pulaskis for tread maintenance and restoration. For crew members driving to our location\, a departure late in the afternoon of 8/11/18 is possible\, though you’ll miss the post-trip get together in town. \nMeet the Crew Leader for this trip.

SUMMARY:Bob Marshall Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow Wilderness stewards for some good times in the legendary Bob Marshall Wilderness! Volunteers will meet AHS crew leader Saturday night in Hungry Horse and camp at the Ranger Station. The next morning you will meet the BMWF Crew Leader to caravan the hour drive to the trailhead. After sorting gear and supplies for the packer and shouldering your backpack\, you will hike the 11 miles into camp. Base camp will be on the banks of the mighty Middle Fork in the Great Bear Wilderness. Monday- Thursday volunteers will work on the trails around the remote Three Forks area. Clearing fallen trees and reestablishing the trail bed (tread) will be the primary focus. Crosscuts\, pulaskis\, shovels\, and hand saws will be the tools of choice. After work\, relax by the river\, pick huckleberries\, or fish the Wild and Scenic Middle Fork! There is also a day off mid week to explore the area and bag a peak! Friday the group will pack up and hike back out to the trailhead and civilization. BMWF will provide all food\, tools\, and group gear. \nMeet the Crew Leader for this trip.

SUMMARY:Makoshika State Park
DESCRIPTION:Makoshika State Park is Montana’s largest state park as it totals almost 12\,000 acres in size. The park has 11 designated trails\, visitor center\, campground\, archery range\, pavilion for rent\, and amphitheater that seats over 200 people. The park receives over 100\,000 visitors a year and just recently won the USA Today Best Montana Attraction award. The park’s main storyline is dinosaurs. Over 10 different species of dinosaur fossils have been found in the park. The visitor center also has a paleontology lab in the basement. The trail crew will be repairing our most popular trail\, the Diane Gabriel Trail. This trail is noted as our “dinosaur trail.” At the top of the Diane Gabriel Trail is a Hadrosaur vertebrate imprint that is fossilized. This trail is receiving a new pedestrian bridge and so we are anticipating more people using the Diane Gabriel Trail after the bridge is installed. The volunteer trail project will not include installation of the new bridge but instead fixing steps and possibly rerouting some portions of the .6 mile trail route. The project will also include installing new interpretive signs and some hand rails. Tools used for the project will include saws\, hammers\, Pulaski’s\, McLeod’s\, and shovels. \nMeet the Crew Leader for this trip.

SUMMARY:Bitterroot National Forest
DESCRIPTION:Big Creek Canyon has long been a major thoroughfare and destination for Native American Indians\, trappers\, and mountain travelers in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness. The trail threads through a beautiful glacier-carved canyon and provides a perfect backdrop for a wilderness experience. With basecamp at the beautiful Big Creek Lake\, SBFC Staff\, Interns and AHS Volunteers will use crosscuts and single-bit axes to clear this well-used trail around the lake to the famous Packbox Pass. Once this work is complete\, the crew will work on clearing the South Fork of Big Creek trail towards another string of glacial lakes. Pack support will be provided to carry group gear\, food\, and tools. \nThis trip is hosted and crew led by the Selway Bitterroot Foundation.

SUMMARY:Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
DESCRIPTION:Trail Maintenance on North Manitou Island – The work will include hiking and clearing the 35 miles of wilderness trails on the island. Volunteers will work alongside Park Service employees to use traditional tools such as axe cross cut saw\, and peavey to clear and brush the trails on the island. Volunteers may be expected to backcountry camp and hike up to 10 miles per day. SUMMARY:Colville National Forest\, Salmo-Priest Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:The section of this trail that volunteers will be working on is an alternate route for the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail. This section of trail runs through the Salmo Priest Wilderness. We will be camping outside of the wilderness and hike about 3 miles to work each day. A fire reached this portion of trail in the summer of 2017 and there are about 100 trees down across the trail. This section will need to be logged out with crosscut saws\, and other types of hand saws. There will be a three person crew to supervise\, assist\, and support the volunteers during this project. Maintenance of the tread may also be required after this winter\, and is a secondary priority. SUMMARY:Custer Gallatin National Forest
DESCRIPTION:This project consists of general trail clearing and maintenance on trails in the Clark’s Fork River drainage and the beartooth plateau on the Custer Gallatin National Forest in the Cooke City\, MT area. Trail clearing and maintenance includes clearing downed trees across trails\, cleaning of water bars\, and removing trailside brush using primitive tools such as crosscut saws\, axes\, shovels\, pulaski’s\, and loppers. Maintainence may also include some work repairing or installing new trail structures such as turnpikes or puncheons. Work will consist of day trips that involve hiking 6 to 10 miles per day while conducting trail work. Volunteer crews will be supervised and will work directly with some of the district’s trail crew. Most of this project work will occur within the picturesque Absaroka Beartooth-Wilderness. Volunteers would stay at the Forest Service Cooke City work station\, a rustic log cabin located 2 miles from Cooke City\, MT. Shower and laundry facilities are available. Goals for week would be clear out as many miles of trails as possible in this area that contains more than 50 miles hiking and horseback riding trails as they emerge from the winters snow pack. \nMeet the Crew Leader for this trip.

SUMMARY:Monongahela National Forest
DESCRIPTION:Canaan Mountain Backcountry is located on a high elevation plateau ranging in elevations from 3\,100 to 4\,145 feet. This is a semi-primitive area that includes many seasonally wet places. Poor drainage from trail surfaces\, dense rhododendron thickets\, and broken bog crossing structures have diminished the quality of recreation opportunity in the area. These sections of trail currently don’t receive much day to day use due to their present condition\, making this a severely underutilized high priority backcountry loop. Trail use does still occur which has caused mud filled spots to widen and worsen. The project on Plantation trail will focus on cutting back Rhododendron from the trail to allow a wider trail corridor and greater evaporation of water from the tread. On Pointy Knob trail\, the focus will be on repairing and installing crossings and elevated trail tread in chronically wet areas. Improving these specific trail sections will improve what is an exceptional backcountry loop that includes a branch off to visit Table Rock\, one of the most gorgeous overlooks in the area. \nMeet the Crew Leader for this trip.

SUMMARY:California Coastal National Monument\, Trinidad coastline
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will work on several popular public trails to local beaches along the Trinidad coastline in northern California\, where the redwoods meet the Pacific Ocean. These are amazing oceanside public trails that highlight the California Coastal National Monument\, coastal habitats and shoreline tidepools. You will be supervised by local trail builders and natural resource experts. The small ‘city’ of Trinidad is recognized as a CA Coastal National Monument Gateway Community for its ocean-front location and support of coastal conservation. Trail distances are often less than one mile each way but the terrain can be strenuous vertical hiking on unlevel terrain from the parking areas to the beach. Work will include restoration of existing trails\, installation of crib steps on a new trail\, trail clearing\, trail digging and removal of invasive plants. Trail work will include manual moving of work materials (lumber\, beach boulders\, gravel\, logs)\, trail step construction\, digging trail drainage / water bars\, and clearing brush and ivy. Your group campsite at nearby Patricks Point State Park is located near the ocean\, tidepools and state park trails. The summer weather is moderate and enjoyable.

SUMMARY:Chugach National Forest
DESCRIPTION:Invasive weed control is a vital and ongoing effort on the Chugach National Forest! We have relatively few infestations\, thus our work in controlling weeds has a huge impact. Volunteers will be traveling via train (no additional fee) to Spencer Glacier and Lake area to control dandelions and other non-natives along trails and developed sites. Work will consist of a 4-mile hike with 1\,500′ elevation gain. The crew will stay at Spencer until Wednesday before departing to camp at Porcupine Campground in Hope\, AK to control non-native species along Hope Point or Gull Rock Trail. Hope Point Trail is extremely steep and climbs approximately 3\,500′ in about 2 miles. SUMMARY:Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will tackle clearing blowdowns and brush along a remote section of the Kekekabic Trail within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northeastern Minnesota’s Superior National Forest. This trail is a vital link in the North Country National Scenic Trail which spans 4\,600 miles from ND to NY. The work will entail using hand saws and loppers to clear the 4′ x 8′ corridor. We will split into two separate crews before going in based upon crew members’ preferences. One crew will canoe into the Kek’s eastern third (half to three quarters of a day’s paddle in)\, basecamp\, and commute via canoe to the work area each day. The other crew will canoe into the heart of the BWCAW (a full day’s paddle in)\, basecamp\, and commute via canoe to the work area each day. \nThis trip is hosted and crew led by the North Country Trail Association.

SUMMARY:General Butler State Resort Park
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will spend Monday-Thursday performing vital projects on the Park’s 9 miles of trails. Various tasks will include: weed-eating\, pruning\, building footbridges\, installing water-bars for steps & drainage\, cutting & clearing fallen trees\, installing roof Trail Shelter\, repairing slope issues\, and adding markers as needed for hiker assurance. If tasks are completed with minimal rain delays\, Friday will be a free day for volunteers to enjoy the Park\, or go explore the area. \nMeet the Crew Leader for this trip.

SUMMARY:Stanislaus National Forest
DESCRIPTION:In 2013 the catastrophic Rim Fire burned over 257\,000 acres of the Forest\, including over 20 miles of hiking trails and the need to plant over 7.5 million trees. We are in the forth year of the recovery process and need help with trail reconstruction including replacing features like water bars\, steps\, and in many cases re-benching the trails. Erosion\, rock slides\, noxious weeds\, and downed trees are impacting the integrity and use of the trails and need to be removed or utilized in the repair work. We are starting with our most popular hiking\, backpacking\, and equestrian trails in the community of Groveland and on the Groveland District. These trails follow the majestic Tuolumne Wild and Scenic River. We will spend days conducting trail repairs\, preparing the land for planting trees and\, if water flow and levels cooperate\, spend one day rafting down either the class IV+ Tuolumne Wild & Scenic River or the lazy Merced Wild & Scenic River in Yosemite Valley. We will be based out of a bunkhouse provided by Hetch Hetchy Water & Power. We will be working on the Preston Falls trail which is located very near the bunkhouse.  We can walk the groups to the trail head or take a two minute drive. We will be transported by van to the put-in site and picked up at the take-out site on the river day. US Forest Service River Patrol Rangers and partners will lead the river trip and Groveland Recreation Staff and partners such as the Groveland Trail Heads will lead the trail and tree planting work. SUMMARY:Gateway National Recreation Area\, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:This project will be focused on providing amenity improvements to the two main visitor trails at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. The renovation of three bird blinds will be the main project\, with additional projects to replace benches\, repair boardwalks\, and improve overall trail conditions to be completed as time allows. \nMeet the Crew Leader for this trip.

SUMMARY:Santa Fe National Forest\, Dome Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers will spend the week working on maintenance on the Capulin Trail. Project will begin 1.5 miles NW of the Capulin trailhead working along canyon rim north to drainage just before main canyon. Trail work will include: clearing trail corridor ( blowdown\, large rocks)\, trail tread (veg removal\, out-sloping) and drainage (cleaning out grade dips). \nThe US Forest Service will host and Crew Lead this trip.
