AHS Mourns the Passing of Susan “Butch” Henley

The Board of Directors and staff of American Hiking Society note with great sadness the passing of Butch Henley on May 21, 2014. Butch was a former member of the AHS Board of Directors as well as an Executive Director of the organization.

Butch Henley was a person who truly had a hiker’s heart. A former thru-hiker of the Appalachian Trail, she was also one of 35 people who, as part of Hik-A-Nation, hiked the entire way across country from Point Reyes National Seashore in California to Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware.

Butch’s family encourages hikers and trail lovers to celebrate her life on the trail on June 7, National Trails Day. Donations in her honor may be made to American Hiking Society or other charities as noted by the family.
