#HikingMakesMe – Kara Richardson Whitely
American Hiking Society Ambassador, Kara Richardson Whitely, responds to our #HikingMakesMe interview.
My name is Kara Richardson Whitely.
When I go on a hike, I never leave home without my cell phone (I’m a terrible navigator).
My favorite book is Wild by my friend and mentor Cheryl Strayed.
In addition to hiking, I love spending time with my family.
I would love to trade places with no one, because I am enough as I am.
Beeping smoke detectors (that need new batteries) frustrate me, more than anything in the whole world.
People don’t know this about me, but I have a slight fear of escalators.
I’m most proud of my daughters.
If I could have a superpower it would be the ability to pause time because life is short.
My favorite meal after a strenuous hike is chili.
Of all the things still to do on my bucket list, I’m most excited about hiking in Hawaii.
My best piece of trail advice is Pole, Pole (Swahili for “Slowly, slowly”).
