Secretary Jewell and Director Jarvis Designate New National Recreation Trails

As an early celebration of American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day^®, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and Director of the National Park Service Jonathan Jarvis have designated 10 new National Recreation Trails.

National Recreation Trails are a part of the National Trails System as designated in the National Trails System Act of 1968. National Recreation Trails provide opportunities for outdoor recreation primarily in and around urban areas and give many Americans a close-to-home opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy nature.

“By designating these exceptional trails as part of the National Trails System, we recognize the efforts of local communities to provide outdoor recreational opportunities that can be enjoyed by everyone,” stated Secretary Jewell.

American Hiking Society thanks Secretary Jewell and Director Jarvis for their continued support of trails and for encouraging the public to enjoy the public lands that belong to them – the American people.

The new National Recreation Trails include rail trails, water trails, and hiking trails, encouraging everyone to get out and explore. See the complete list of trails.
