Calling all bird lovers and nature enthusiasts! American Hiking Society’s Volunteer Vacations are not just about trail maintenance; they’re about engaging meaningfully with nature and building camaraderie with your fellow volunteers.
What are Volunteer Vacations?
Volunteer Vacations with American Hiking Society offer participants the chance to spend a week or weekend building and maintaining trails in diverse landscapes across the country. Whether you’re a seasoned backpacker or prefer day hikes, there’s a Volunteer Vacation suited for you.
This year, we are offering over 40+ Volunteer Vacations to choose from, each providing an opportunity to immerse yourself in diverse landscapes teeming with wildlife and birds. Below are some of our featured trips, ranging from the Pacific Northwest to the rugged coastlines of Alaska to the serene beauty of the Appalachian Mountains.Â
Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge
Venture into the heart of eastern Washington’s Ponderosa pine forests at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, a sanctuary for over 140 migratory bird species. The refuge encompasses over 23,000 acres in eastern Washington on the edge of the Columbia River Basin, and lies in the heart of the channeled scablands. Your volunteer efforts will not only help maintain trails but also provide you with ample bird watching opportunities as you traverse the refuge’s diverse habitats. From Trumpeter Swans to Rocky Mountain Elk to Cinnamon Teal, expect to encounter a myriad of bird species while contributing to their habitat preservation.
Prince William Sound
Prepare to be awe-struck by the avian diversity of Alaska’s Prince William Sound. Volunteer to extend and repair trails amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Gulf of Alaska, all while surrounded by the calls of seabirds and the majestic sight of soaring eagles. But Prince William Sound is more than just a haven for birds; it’s a sanctuary for marine life as well. Keep an eye out for whales breaching in the distance, sea otters frolicking in the waves, and seals basking on rocky outcrops as you explore the rugged coastline.Â
Shenandoah National Park
Delve into Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park, where over 200,000 acres of protected lands await avid birdwatchers. Join fellow volunteers in maintaining trails amidst the park’s diverse habitats, offering you the chance to spot resident and migratory bird species against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains. From the melodious songs of warblers to the graceful flight of raptors, Shenandoah National Park promises unforgettable birding experiences for volunteers.
