Restore & Explore: Volunteer in Nebraska’s National Forest

Have you ever dreamed of making a real impact while exploring breathtaking landscapes?

If so, the Nebraska National Forest Volunteer Vacation is the perfect opportunity to give back to nature while immersing yourself in one of the most unique environments in the country.

Volunteer Vacations are week-long service trips that combine adventure with conservation. Organized by AHS, these trips bring together groups of volunteers to work on maintaining and restoring trails, campsites, and public lands across the country. This year, volunteers will help restore the Scott Lookout Trail in the Bessey Ranger District of Nebraska’s Sandhills, home to the world’s largest hand-planted forest. The region, known for its rolling sand dunes and vast grasslands, was devastated by the Bovee Fire in October 2022, which burned approximately 5,000 acres. Now, volunteers are needed to help re-mulch and re-sign the trail, ensuring its accessibility for hikers and visitors looking to experience the beauty of this unique landscape.

Experience the Unique Beauty of the Sandhills

Beyond the rewarding work, volunteers will have the opportunity to explore a landscape unlike any other. The Nebraska Sandhills cover over 12 million acres, making them the second-largest intact grasslands in the world. This area is vital for carbon storage, biodiversity, and the region’s ranching economy. Volunteers will also learn about the historical significance of the area, including the legacy of Dr. Charles E. Bessey, whose vision helped establish the Nebraska National Forest in the early 1900s.

The Nebraska National Forest also offers a wide range of recreational opportunities. Whether you enjoy hiking, wildlife spotting, or simply soaking in the quiet beauty of the prairie, there’s something for everyone. The area’s history, from its hand-planted trees to its connection with early conservation efforts, makes it a fascinating destination for nature lovers and history buffs alike.

Perfect for Families – Open to Ages 12+

Looking for a meaningful way to spend time with your family? This Volunteer Vacation is open to participants ages 12 and up, making it an ideal experience for families looking to bond while giving back to nature. Working together on a shared conservation project not only strengthens family connections but also instills a lifelong appreciation for outdoor stewardship in younger volunteers. With this opportunity, your whole family can gain hands-on experience in environmental conservation while enjoying the adventure of exploring the great outdoors.

This trip provides a unique opportunity to make lasting memories together, and with guidance from experienced trip leaders and a welcoming community of volunteers, families can feel confident and supported throughout their adventure.
