MO State Parks, Mo’ NTD

Missouri State Parks is proud to offer a diverse system of nearly 1,000 miles of trails that allows users to experience the varied natural landscapes of the state.  State parks and historic sites are eager to celebrate these natural resources with National Trails Day® on June 1.

“National Trails Day® allows Missouri State Parks to call attention to these great opportunities for citizens to benefit from an adventure on our trails,” said Bill Bryan, director of Missouri State Parks, a division of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. “Events like this also serve to energize us to build on our strengths and continue development of our trails system.”

A statewide survey confirmed that Missourians want trails, and Missouri State Parks has worked to develop and promote its trails system.  In 2012, the Missouri State Parks released a comprehensive guide to more than 230 trails.  Trails of Missouri State Parks is the culmination of a two-year survey of all state park trails to collect and inventory information.  Efforts are ongoing to develop a statewide database of easily accessible information, an effort made possible with the help of local and state agencies and support organizations.

Missouri’s trails offer an experience for everyone, from a leisurely walk on a paved trail to a more adventurous hike through the wilderness.  On National Trails Day®, more than 30 events are planned in state parks and historic sites all over Missouri, including historic adventures, exciting competitions, and educational experiences.  As well as being a fun-filled opportunity, these events give participants the chance to connect with nature and are especially great for families looking for a healthy, exciting day outdoors.

Missouri has been named the “Best Trails State” by American Trails, a national, nonprofit organization working on behalf of the nation’s hiking, biking and riding trails. The national award is presented every two years to the state that has made tremendous contributions to promote and improve their trails system.
