Trail Stewardship in Hope, Alaska

On the rugged and beautiful Gull Rock Trail, a group of American Hiking Society volunteers spent a week there with the goal to replace a rotted 130-foot boardwalk and keep this popular trail safe and accessible. Each day brought steady progress as the crew worked together to dismantle the old structure and build a new one using lumber that had been hauled in the winter before.

The labor was tough at times, but the rewards were clear. One participant reflected, “I loved the time with my 17 year old. The teamwork and problem solving around weather, food, work, etc. was really great. The camp was spectacular and it was so amazing to spend the week there.” Trips like this show how Volunteer Vacations can be more than trail work.
They are a chance for families to spend meaningful time together, strengthening bonds and creating memories in the outdoors while giving back to the places they explore. The campsite quickly became a favorite part of the trip, with volunteers sharing meals and stories after the day on the trail.
On breaks, the group explored the historic gold rush town of Hope and took on smaller hikes in the surrounding area. Hope is a small but vibrant community tucked along the Turnagain Arm, known for its rich history, scenic views, and welcoming spirit. For many volunteers, it was their first time visiting this corner of Alaska. Volunteer Vacations not only provide a chance to give back through trail stewardship, they also open the door to discovering new places and connecting with the local culture and landscapes that make each destination unique.
Volunteer Vacations are kept affordable so people can share adventures with loved ones, explore remarkable places, and give back through meaningful stewardship. One crew member shared, “The price made my trip of a lifetime to Alaska possible.”
For many volunteers, this trip was a chance to explore a whole new place while making a lasting difference on the trail. The week at Gull Rock blended service, adventure, and connection, leaving behind both a stronger boardwalk and unforgettable memories of Alaska’s beauty. Experiences like this capture the heart of Volunteer Vacations, giving back to public lands while discovering the joy of new places and people along the way.
