Hiking After the Pandemic – Megan’s Tale from the Trail

Hiking revitalized my life after the pandemic. Quarantine disrupted my high school experience, and I spent many monumental moments, like committing to college and getting my driver’s license, isolated at home.
I expected these milestones to give me more freedom, but I couldn’t go anywhere indoors. If anything, I felt more restricted and trapped than before. After seeing a hiking vlog online, I decided to try it for the first time. Visiting local trails gave me a much-needed reprise from Zoom classes and ‘doom scrolling’ on my phone. Going to my neighborhood park quickly turned into long walks in the woods, ultimately ending with climbing NJ’s tallest mountains. For the first time since the pandemic began, I could participate in an activity without relying on a screen.
As restrictions were lifted, hiking became an easier and safer way to connect with my loved ones. I became more adventurous, trekking higher peaks and going farther from home to experience more sights. More than anything, hiking is a beacon of resilience in my life. My most cherished moments are on trails, from finding hope during quarantine to keeping myself active during college. Being immersed in nature and challenging myself physically helps me clear my head as I navigate young adulthood. Hiking has brought me clarity, confidence, and, above all, joy.”

Megan’s story is a powerful reminder of how time outdoors can help us heal, grow, and reconnect — with ourselves and each other.
