American Hiking Society seeks Development Intern for Fall 2024 (September -December)
American Hiking Society is currently seeking a Development Intern for Fall, 2024 (September – December). The Development Intern will work approximately 10 hours per week with a flexible schedule Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m, EST. This is a remote position, but we will only consider candidates from Colorado, Indiana, Maryland, North Carolina, Utah, Virginia, Wyoming. Salary is $20/hr and arrangements can also be made with educational institutions for course credit or work/study.
AMERICAN HIKING SOCIETY
American Hiking Society, a 501c3 nonprofit founded in 1976, is the only national nonprofit serving the hiking community. Our mission is “Empowering ALL to enjoy, share, and preserve the hiking experience.” We achieve our mission through grassroots and grasstops advocacy and volunteer programming; and we envision a world where everyone feels welcome in the American hiking community and has permanent access to meaningful hiking, including urban, frontcountry, and backcountry opportunities. Our volunteer programs include week-long trips based all over the country such as Alternative Break (for students) and Volunteer Vacations (all ages) for all trail service experience levels; and American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day®, a national day of advocacy and trail service on the 1st Saturday in June involving 1000+ events and more than 100,000 participants. Our advocacy programs include the year-long NextGen Trail Leaders program, which focuses on advocacy, stewardship and professional development for 18-40 year-old rising leaders in the outdoors; and Hike the Hill®, an annual advocacy event organized in collaboration with the Partnership for the National Trail System that brings together 150+ trail organizations and advocates to meet with elected officials and federal land manager leadership. DEVELOPMENT INTERN
POSITION SUMMARY
This internship spans a range of responsibilities, professional development opportunities and learning experiences, and is ideal for those interested in exploring a career in the nonprofit sector, funding and partnership development, conservation advocacy, or communications and marketing. The Development Intern reports to the Director of Corporate and Foundation Partnerships and is a remote position.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES
- Conduct corporate brand research and outreach
- Conduct foundation grant research and outreach
- Coordinate relationship management cultivation and engagement
- Produce funding materials and program impact reports
- Analyze revenue models, budget forecasts and resource mobilization tactics
QUALIFICATIONS
- Genuine dedication to the outdoors, conservation and service
- Interest in non-profit development and fundraising
- Commitment to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Strong skills in communication, research and project management, and basic computer skills (or the ability and desire to learn quickly)

SALARY and BENEFITS
- Non-negotiable salary starting at $20/hr. Arrangements can also be made with educational institutions for course credit or work/study.
- Flexible work hours Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. EST as agreed upon with the Director of Corporate and Foundation Partnerships
- Computer equipment provided by American Hiking if needed; must have own smartphone for receiving AHS-related calls (AHS does not provide a stipend for mobile service, but the calls will be infrequent)
