Summary
The Tahoe Rim Trail Restoration Project will tackle some of the most highly impacted areas on the Tahoe Rim Trail by addressing critical maintenance needs from Echo Lakes to Barker Pass, which passes through Desolation Wilderness, the most visited wilderness area in the country, and the sections south and north of Tahoe City. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association will address these needs through multi-day backcountry volunteer work camps, ACE Crew workdays and regular volunteer trail workdays.
Project Description
The Tahoe Rim Trail Restoration Project will address critical maintenance needs on about 70 miles of trail through three sections of the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) between Echo Summit to Brockway Summit including the section through Desolation Wilderness. These sections of trail are in need of new signage, drainage and rock wall repairs, brushing and reconstruction of areas impacted by heavy rains and usage. Over 44 miles of the 70 miles of this project are hike/equestrian only, mountain bikes are allowed on the remaining 25.3 miles. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) has had great success with volunteer backcountry camps as a strategy for addressing critical maintenance needs on remote sections of trail. In addition to hosting three backcountry camps within the project area, the TRTA plans to contract with the American Conservation Experience (ACE) Crews for 1-2 weeks to complete some of the most remote and technical work. Project sites closer to trailheads will be handled with regularly scheduled volunteer workdays. In addition to the trail work, TRTA sawyers will clear all downed trees within the section during the 2016 season. This year, over 300 trees have been cleared from the TRT! Grant support from the AHS-MUST grant program will enable the TRTA to recruit sufficient volunteers and fully fund the volunteer workdays, backcountry camps and ensure our volunteers have the tools and safety equipment needed to accomplish our mission. We’ve found that our trail volunteers become our best stewards of the trail and often recruit additional volunteers to join the effort!
This project will start in spring of 2016 with scheduling and contracting with partners. Workday registrations and volunteer recruitment will commence in late spring with work beginning as early as the winter snow melt permits. It is expected that over 2500 hours of volunteer labor will be dedicated to this project resulting in improved recreational access for over 100,000 annual users by ensuring open and safe trail.
