Summary
Lone Star Hiking Trail is the longest foot-path only trail in Texas and has 15 trailheads to access the trail. This project has four objectives: 1) establish standardized trailhead road signs, so users can easily find all trailheads; 2) add gravel to harden the parking areas, so they will be an all weather surface; 3) replace rotten post and railings on six trailheads to define the parking area. 4) help bring the Lone Star Hiking Trail up to standard, so it won’t face closure.
Project Description
This project will bring seven of the Lone Star Hiking Trail trailheads up to Forest Service standards and the seven remaining trailheads will have consistent road signage for the longest foot-trail in Texas. Trailhead# 1 will receive 180 tons of gravel, a 48″ x 30″ Recreation Site Identification Sign at the entrance to the trailhead, and a 38″ x 40″ Site Approach sign at corner of FM 149 & Forest Service Road 219. Trailheads # 2,3,4,6,7, & 8 will receive 48″ x 30″ Recreation Site Identification Signs at the trailhead entrances. Trailhead# 9 will receive 90 tons of gravel, 48″ x 30″ Recreation Site Identification Sign at entrance, and 290 feet of post & railings around the outside of the parking area. Trailhead# 10 will receive 40 tons of gravel, a 48″ x 30″ Recreation Site Identification Sign at entrance, and additional 20 feet of post and railings around parking area. Trailhead# 11 will receive 34 tons of gravel, a 48″ x 30″ Recreation Site Identification Sign at the entrance, and 50 feet of post & railings around parking area. Trailhead# 12 will receive 10 tons of gravel & a 38″ x 40″ Site Approach sign at corner of Forest Service Road 221 & Forest Service Road 217 to direct visitors to turn down FSR 217 to trailhead. Trailhead# 13 will receive 121 tons of gravel, a 48″ x 30″ Recreation Site Identification Sign at entrance, and 120 feet of post & railings. Trailhead# 14 will receive 45 tons of gravel, a 48″ x 30″ Recreation Site Identification Sign at entrance, and 250 feet of post & railings around parking area. Trailhead# 15 will receive 55 tons of gravel, and 80 feet of additional post & railings around parking area. The trailheads will have consistent Recreation Site Identification Signs, so drivers can find the Lone Star Hiking Trail trailheads easily. Added gravel will provide a firm base for parking vehicles for day hikers, backpackers, and through-hikers. The Sam Houston National Forest has no budget for the Lone Star Hiking Trail, so volunteer non-profit organizations must maintain and bring the trail up to standard to prevent possible closure.
