American Hiking Society will accept forms of cryptocurrency that have an equivalent value in real currency or that acts as a substitute for real currency, also known as convertible virtual currency. Such forms of cryptocurrency are listed on an exchange and the exchange rate is established by market supply and demand.
The fair market value of the virtual currency is determined by converting the virtual currency into U.S. dollars at the exchange rate in a reasonable manner that is consistently applied. Contributions of cryptocurrency will be treated as a contribution of Tangible Personal Property.
Contributions of Cryptocurrency must be converted to U.S. Dollars as swiftly as is practicable. They may not be made in a completely anonymous manner although donors may request anonymity in publications and/or gift announcements. All gifts of cryptocurrency are considered irrevocable upon conversion to US Dollars and may not be refunded.
Donating cryptocurrency is a non-taxable event, meaning you do not owe capital gains tax on the appreciated amount and can deduct it on your taxes. This makes Bitcoin, Ethereum and other cryptocurrency donations one of the most tax-efficient ways to support AHS. You can find all of our accepted cryptocurrencies in our FAQ below.
When you donate crypto to American Hiking Society, we immediately convert your donation to fiat, which means all donations are non-refundable. Please only send currencies listed on the widget. Do not send unsupported currencies (including unsupported ERC-20s, ERC-721s and BEP20s) as they will be lost.
