Building a Stronger Trail at Big South Fork
Deep in the heart of Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau, a group of volunteers gathered this spring to help care for one of Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area’s most iconic destinations: the Twin Arches trail.
Known for dramatic sandstone bluffs, sweeping views, and some of the tallest natural arches east of the Mississippi, this trail draws thousands of visitors each year — but heavy use and steep terrain take a toll.

Throughout the week, volunteers worked hard to improve the trail’s sustainability and protect the landscape. Using hand tools, they repaired eroded tread, cleared overgrown vegetation, built water bars for drainage, and helped maintain ladders and boardwalks that allow hikers to safely traverse steep sections. A crew member summed up the experience: “Renovating a steep section of the most popular trail at Big South Fork felt especially rewarding — knowing we were making it safer and more durable for everyone who follows.”
Days began with a hike into the work site — sometimes up to two miles over steep, rocky paths — but the volunteers were undeterred. The stunning views from the Twin Arches and the sense of shared purpose fueled their efforts. In their free time, they explored additional trails throughout the park, taking in the wild beauty of this 125,000-acre landscape where river gorges, wildlife, and historic sites come together.
What made this trip stand out was not only the work but the atmosphere of the park and the partnership with its staff. One participant shared, “Big South Fork is the best Volunteer Vacation I’ve been on. They have great facilities, all the tools you need, and even the park superintendent came out to visit us. The project leader is the best I’ve ever worked with, and everyone on the crew gave it their all.”

By week’s end, the steep sections of the Twin Arches trail were transformed — safer, more sustainable, and ready to welcome the next visitors eager to experience this special place. The volunteers left not just a stronger trail behind, but a reminder that caring for our public lands is a shared responsibility — and a meaningful way to connect with the landscapes we love.
