Volunteers Help Protect Lopez Island Trails!

The San Juan Islands National Monument, tucked into Washington State’s Puget Sound, is a place of rugged coastlines, distant peaks, and rich biodiversity. This summer, volunteers traveled to Lopez Island to take part in one of American Hiking Society’s most popular recurring trips, helping mitigate social trails and maintain visitor access in this unique marine landscape.

Work included brushing overgrown trails, leveling tread, and installing signs and barriers — all to keep people on the right path and protect the surrounding ecosystems. Under the guidance of a supportive host and crew leader, the team felt welcomed and empowered: “Through the guidance of our host and crew leader we all felt comfortable in the work and appreciated the opportunity to try new things!”

With short hikes to the work sites, volunteers had time to explore more of the island in the afternoons. “It was wonderful to finish the work day in the midafternoon and be able to explore this island on our own,” one participant shared. “We were able to go into the town and enjoy a refreshment and also explore other parts of the island too!”

Nearly everyone on the crew was new to volunteering with AHS, which created a shared sense of curiosity and camaraderie. “Nearly every volunteer was a first-time participant which made the experience new and exciting for all of us! Being able to learn together about trail maintenance, practice with tools, and learn which tasks we enjoyed the most was a unique opportunity.”

The group bonded over trail work, casual evenings, and shared meals. “The people in our group were my favorite thing other than being out in nature in a beautiful place. Lopez Island is now my favorite among the others I have been to. I was a little emotional leaving on the last day — good emotional. It was such a pleasure to hang with great people from all across the US.”

One volunteer reflected on the experience of joining with a loved one: “Joining this trip with my mom who inspired and fostered my love for the outdoors was really meaningful. Working by her side on the trail during the day and getting to connect by the fire at night is a lifelong memory I will cherish forever.”

From ocean views to new friendships, this recurring trip offers more than just trail maintenance — it’s a meaningful way to connect with place, people, and purpose. As one participant summed it up: “Getting to spend a weekend with a group of amazing volunteers in a beautiful island location was a highlight of the trip! You made my first Volunteer Vacation truly remarkable!
