American Hiking Society Appoints Clare Zlatic Blankemeyer as Interim Executive Director
April 15, 2026
The American Hiking Society Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Clare Zlatic Blankemeyer as Interim Executive Director, effective immediately.
Clare brings extensive nonprofit leadership experience to the role and has supported numerous nonprofit organizations through leadership transitions via her consulting firm, blankspace. Her background makes her uniquely suited to guide AHS through this period as the Board conducts a national search for a permanent Executive Director, which is expected to conclude later this year.
AHS's programs and advocacy work will continue without interruption. The organization, celebrating its 50th year this year, is preparing for a landmark summer season, including National Trails Day® on June 6th and exceptionally-attended Volunteer Vacations.
“The mental and physical benefits of urban hiking have been deeply impactful to me,“ said Zlatic Blankemeyer. “I’m honored to step into this role and support the mission of the American Hiking Society during this transition.”
“I am privileged to serve as Board Chair as we welcome Clare and guide AHS through its 50th anniversary transition. The future is bright. We are seeing strong growth in our signature programs and are well positioned, with interim leadership in place, to meet increasing demand for public land preservation,” said Chuck Frank, Board Chair.
