San Juan Island, Mount Ben Preserve and Mount Grant Preserve

We will be constructing a new hiker only trail on the Mount Ben Preserve located on San Juan Island. The Preserve straddles the southern shoulder of the Island’s highest ridge – Mount Dallas. The trail climbs approximately 450 vertical feet and is .75 mile in length with potential to connect to other trails in the future. The trail begins in a forested area with some fantastic old growth Douglas fir specimens and ascends into meadows with sweeping views of distant islands, straits, Vancouver Island and the Olympic Mountains. Trails will be constructed using existing native soil and stone and is steep in some sections.

Area and Attractions

The San Juan archipelago is nestled in the northwest corner of Washington State, bounded by Vancouver Island, Canada to the West, the Olympic Peninsula to the South, and the Cascade Mountains to the East and North. The islands rich waters and temperate climate host a wide variety of wildlife, not to mention the stunning views of coastal waters, islands, and distant snow capped mountains and volcanoes. Most trails are quite short (less than a mile) with only small elevation gain, and are largely rustic in nature. The region is known around the world for its beauty and wildlife and has played an important role in the history of the Pacific Northwest.

Accommodations Description

Volunteers will camp either at San Juan County Park or a farmstead managed by a partner organization. Both have flush toilets and running water. No showers are available on site, but are available in Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor. Volunteers should bring their own tent, sleeping bag/sleeping pad, cup/bowl/mug/eating utensils, and personal gear.

Travel

Airport pickup provided from Friday Harbor Airport. Airport pickup and dropoff times will be sent to registrants when the trip is confirmed.
