Six Rivers National Forest

June 24, 2018 - June 30, 2018

Trip Navigation

Volunteers will work on opening the Haypress Trail toward Cudihy Lakes providing access to the heart of the Marble Mountain Wilderness. The project will involve using crosscut saws to clear trees that have fallen across the trail. There will be tread improvement and brushing to be done as well, although the work will primarily be tree clearing. By opening the Haypress Trail, we will make it easier for hikers, equestrians, and Forest Service scientists and staff to attain access to the greater network of trails in the wilderness. The first day on the trail, we will backpack to Monument Lake and make a basecamp. Hikes to work sites each day will range from approximately one to three miles. On our day off, we’ll be able to use our newly cleared trail. Likely destinations for optional hikes include Cudihy Lakes or Medicine Mountain. The project base camp may be subject to change, depending upon trail conditions.

This trip is hosted and crew led by the United Trail Maintainers of California.

Area and Attractions

The Marble Mountains rise above deep river gorges in which are found pristine streams known for their salmon runs, trout, and whitewater rafting opportunities. The mountains are cloaked with diverse, primeval evergreen forests and are home to the rare Brewer Spruce which only grows in this area. At the higher elevations you will find beautiful meadows with spectacular wildflower displays, jewel-like lakes with good swimming and fishing, and panoramic views of nearby peaks and those in neighboring ranges.

Accommodations Description

The crew will be camping at Monument Lake at primitive group campsites near the lake. We will have a fire ring and a group stove. Since we are using pack stock, we can bring ice chests as well. We have group cooking gear and a group water filter. Showers will be available at the end of the trip. Volunteers should bring their own tent, sleeping pad and bag, cup/bowl/eating utensils, and personal items.
