California Coastal National Monument, Trinidad CA

September 20, 2020 - September 26, 2020

Trip Navigation

Trip CANCELLED due to COVID-19:

Volunteers will work on two public trails to spectacular beaches along the Trinidad coastline in northern California, where the redwoods meet the Pacific Ocean. These are amazing ocean front public use areas that highlight the California Coastal National Monument’s offshore rocks and islands, coastal forests, sand bluffs and shoreline tidepools. We will replace trail steps at the Luffenholtz Beach Park vista point trail. We will also work on trail steps at the nearby Old Home Beach public trail. These trails offer scenic vistas and access to surf fishing and tidepool exploring. Last year’s volunteers loved their experience here. Trail distances are less than one mile from trail head downhill to the beach, but include moderately difficult hiking on unleveled terrain. Work will include replacement of existing trail steps, installation of new crib steps, trail clearing and removal of invasive plants. Trail work will also include manual moving of materials (lumber, beach boulders, gravel, logs), trail step construction, digging trail drainage / water bars, and clearing brush and ivy. The nearby group campsite is at Patricks Point State Park and includes warm showers and flush-toilet restrooms. Our small ‘city’ of Trinidad is recognized as a CA Coastal National Monument Gateway Community for its scenic vistas and community support of coastal conservation. The nearby city of Arcata, a college town home to Humboldt State University, has a downtown plaza and many social events.

Our work area includes public trails that highlight the offshore rocks and habitat of the California Coastal National Monument. Your basecamp will be at nearby Patricks Point State Park. We will host and transport the volunteers as needed on the first and last transportation days, and also for a day of outdoor hiking exploration that could include sand dunes and redwood forests.
