This trail project will include a variety of activities such as brushing back and clearing vegetation from the trail surface. General maintenance and repairs of trail benches. General maintenance and repairs of trail boardwalks and bridges. These tasks will require the use of regular and power hand tools such as power string trimmers, saws, drills, shovels, rakes, pruners, and trimmers.

Area and Attractions

Gulf Islands is the largest of the national seashores, stretching 160 miles from Cat Island, Mississippi to the eastern tip of Santa Rosa Island, Florida. Its sparkling waters and beautiful sugar white beaches make it the crown jewel of the Gulf’s Emerald Coast. The Seashore encompasses historic forts, coastal forests and marshes, and wilderness islands. Gulf Islands is home to four species of sea turtles, over 300 species of birds, and you can spot pods of bottle nose dolphins from the beaches. The climate is sunny and warm most of the year. Park headquarters is located in Gulf Breeze, Florida, across the bay from Pensacola (pop. 60,000). The community boasts excellent shopping, medical facilities, cultural and sporting events, and is home to the University of West Florida and Pensacola State College. In addition to the amazing opportunities offered on Santa Rosa Island, Pensacola Naval Air Station is located across the bay and is home to the Blue Angels. The Navel Air Station also offers a free naval air museum and historic Fort Barnnacas is located on the Air Station which will be an excellent offsite activity.

Accommodations Description

Volunteers will be staying in a fully furnished house, the Captain's House, at Fort Pickens. The house is equipped with a full kitchen, rooms with two twin beds, three bathrooms, washer and dryer, and grills. There is internet in the Visitors Center. Volunteers should bring their own linens (twin sized bed), towels, and personal gear.

Travel

Airport pickup provided from Pensacola International Airport. Airport pickup and dropoff times will be sent to registrants when the trip is confirmed.
