Area and Attractions

Boasting 1.5 miles of waterfront on the Chesapeake Bay, Kiptopeke State Park sits on the southern tip of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The park is a mixture of open fields, upland maritime forest, reclaimed farmland and beach. The terrain is mostly flat and is the largest migratory stopover for songbirds on the Atlantic Flyway in the fall. The other feature that draws people are the nine WWII concrete ships that sit 300 feet off the beach. The ships were sunk off Kiptopeke in 1948 to act as a breakwater for the ferry ships that were docking. The ships now are home several species of fish, crabs, oysters and other sea creatures. The top of the ships have been claimed by seagulls and brown pelicans. Visit Kiptopeke - a park with rich history and a wide variety of recreational opportunities!

Accommodations Description

Volunteers will stay in a six bedroom lodge. The lodge has two queen beds, four twin beds and four bunk beds. There is a kitchen, living room, dining area, three full bathrooms and two porches. The kitchen has a refrigerator, microwave, oven, toaster, two coffee pots, plates, cups, silverware, cooking utensils, cooking ware, and serving dishes. Linens, towels and pillows are all included. The lodge does not have a laundry room, but we do have a laundry facility in the park. Outside there are rocking chairs on the porch, a charcoal grill, fire ring and picnic table. Volunteers should bring their own personal gear.
