TRIP CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19:

 

Tread restoration, building rolling dips, removing berm to out slope tread on segments of the the Blue Bend Loop Trail located in the Big Draft Wilderness on the Monongahela National Forest. There are various segments of this trail that require work varying from less than 50 feet to several hundred yards. The work site(s) will be selected based on number of crew members, weather, and crew experience. Hike in to the project will be approximately 1 mile. The project is within a Congressionally designated wilderness so use of hand tools is required. Tools including Pulaski’s, fire rakes, shovels, rock bars, hoes, Mclouds, soil tampers, and gravel bags will be used and provided by the Forest Service. Forest Service staff will provide a safety briefing and training prior to crew engaging in work.

Area and Attractions

The Monongahela National Forest is located in the Allegheny Highlands. The project area is located adjacent to Anthony Creek which is a stocked trout stream as well as the Greenbrier River that in addition to fishing opportunities is popular with kayakers and canoeing enthusiasts. The Greenbrier River Trail is within a mile of the project site and is a great rail trail for bicyclists. The Greenbrier Resort is within 15 minutes of the project site. Lewisburg is 20 minutes from the site and was named “Coolest Small Town in America “.

Accommodations Description

Lodging options are various. There is an Adirondack shelter located on the trail and closet to the work site that can accommodate 5 in shelter and room for 3 tents. Another option is Blue Bend Campground located at the base of the trail. Flush toilets and hot showers are available. The crew could use either of these options at no charge or a combination if desired. Fire rings, lantern post, and picnic tables are available. Volunteers should bring their own tent, sleeping bag/sleeping pad, cup/bowl/mug/eating utensils, and personal gear.

Airport Pickup Provided from Greenbrier Valley Airport. Airport pickup and dropoff times will be sent to registrants when the trip is confirmed.
