Tejon Ranch Conservancy

At the southern tip of the Sierra Nevada in California, Tejon Ranch Conservancy is a non-profit organization that manages the conservation easement for 90% of Tejon Ranch. Thirty-six miles of Pacific Crest Trail are planned for reroute from the desert floor to the 6,800′ forested mountaintops of the ranch. While the main PCT reroute is still several years away, there is need for completing adjacent amenities, access, and stewardship projects in anticipation of the new trail, including creating a primitive campground. Our work will use hand tools to improve the existing site: shovels, loppers, hand saws, grubbing tools, etc.

Area and Attractions

The Tehachapi Mountains bridge four climate zones: Sierra Nevada, Coast Ranges, Mojave Desert, and California's Central Valley. Tejon Ranch, which comprises a majority of the Tehachapis, is 270,000 acres- almost twice the size of Zion National Park. While covering only 0.025% of California's land mass, it is home to almost 14% of California's flora and fauna! Elevations range from 1,000' to 6,800'. The landscape features Native American pictographs and village sites, massive oak woodlands, sprawling Joshua Tree groves, subalpine conifer forests, and views stretching from the Coast Ranges to Sequoia to the Mojave Desert. Hiking, birdwatching, and rare native plant blooms are on-site. Volunteers will be given opportunities to search for rare species, hike to hidden resources, and enjoy locally-famous camp cookouts. On the free day, a cross-ranch safari is available for volunteers. Led by docents into the heart of Tejon Ranch, you will experience California as it was hundreds of years ago. We will show you highlights of the permanently protected areas (which comprise 90% of Tejon) and interpret history, flora/fauna, and offer you an experience that few others have had, behind the gates of this storied range.

Accommodations Description

Volunteers will stay in dormitory lodging (hostel-style, gender-separate) at Hungry Valley State Park adjacent to ranch, includes cooking area, indoor plumbing and camp cots. Also available on site is outdoor camping, including common cooking area, tent campsites, and parking for trailers/campers. Volunteers should bring their own linens or sleeping bag, pillow, towels, cup/bowl/eating utensils, and personal items.

Airport pickup provided from Los Angeles International Airport. Airport pickup and dropoff times will be sent to registrants when the trip is confirmed.
