Coalinga Mineral Springs National Recreation Trail

March 11, 2018 - March 17, 2018

Trip Navigation

Coalinga Mineral Springs National Recreation Trail was in a burn area from the Mineral Fire in 2016. The fire caused some destabilization to the slopes and subsequently damaged some sections of the trail. The trail needs repairs to several slide areas and tread work over the length of the trail. The trail work will involve use of Pulaski’s, McLeod’s, shovels and loppers. It is approximately a 2 3/4 mile hike to the summit of Kreyenhagen peak, which has outstanding views of the surrounding foothills and on a clear day views of the Sierras to the East.

The Crew Leader position for this trip is still OPEN.  Learn more about becoming a Crew Leader with American Hiking Society.

Area and Attractions

The Laguna Mountain Area consists of somewhat rugged terrain with rolling hills covered in dense brush. The area's vegetation is characterized by classic chapparal habitat, oak forests, and grassy meadows. Laguna Creek flows through the area most of the year, accompanied by a series of scenic waterfalls in the Gorge. Pinnacles National Park is nearby which offers miles of hiking trails and beautiful vistas of the surrounding area. Close by Mt Laguna and the gorge offers scenic views and a short side trip to a waterfall. If volunteers are interested in a full day trip, Monterey coast is a 2 hr drive from the base camp.

Accommodations Description

Volunteers will camp at the BLM administrative site. The site has a restroom with single shower stall and toilet and will be available throughout the week. Volunteers should bring their own tent, sleeping bag, pad, cup/bowl/eating utensils, and personal items.
