Sheyenne National Grasslands

The crew will tackle several projects on the 32 miles of the North Country National Scenic Trail in the Sheyenne National Grassland, including: re-setting trail marker posts, doing trail tread repair work, and mowing the trail. This work will involve using hand tools, walk behind brush mowers, and walk behind motorized wheelbarrows. The Sheyenne National Grassland is a 71,000 acre expanse of tallgrass prairie and oak savannah – two endangered ecosystems.

This trip will be hosted and crew led by the North Country Trail Association.

Area and Attractions

The 71,000 acre Sheyenne National Grassland is the largest block of publicly-owned tallgrass prairie in the U.S. It is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and is one of 17 National Grasslands in the midwestern and western regions. It features rolling sand hills that originated as deposits at a glacial river's delta where it dumped into glacial Lake Agassiz. These sand dunes are now covered by tallgrass prairie, oak savanna, as well as central hardwood forest. The Sheyenne features a 32 mile segment of the North Country National Scenic Trail, the Oak Leaf loop trail (which leaves right from the Campground), the Hankinson Hills loop trail, and two developed Campgrounds. At this time of year, it will be possible to see western prairie fringed orchids, other prairie wildflowers, and an amazing variety of wildlife species.

Accommodations Description

The Campround features a pit toilet, water pump, and tent sites. Showers are available a 3 mile drive from the campsite. The NCTA will provide a camp kitchen and all cooking gear. Volunteers should bring their own tent, sleeping bag and pad, cup/bowl/eating utensils, and personal items.
