Sophie’s Flat/Red Top Trail System

Sophie’s Flat Trail includes 15 miles of non-motorized trails that wind along hills and washes of the beautiful Sonoran Desert. The project will include replacing carsonite signs and repairing sections of the trail that have been eroded by rain and heavy usage. Elevation gain along the trail is easy to moderate. Volunteers will use shovels, McLeods, pickaxes, folding saws and rakes.

Area and Attractions

Wickenburg is a historic mining and ranching area in the heart of the Sonoran Desert just an hours drive from downtown Phoenix. Hills studded with a variety of cactus and desert flora surround us. Local attractions include the award winning Desert Caballeros Western Museum, the 1860's Vulture Gold Mine, Hassayampa River Preserve, and scenic hikes. Lake Pleasant is 40 minutes away. The Phoenix area offers Desert Botanical Gardens, Musical Instrument Museum, and other urban attractions.

Accommodations Description

Volunteers will be staying at Weaver Mountain Fire and Aviation Station, 13 miles from the trailhead. The host will provide daily transportation to the trailhead. It is a full service facility with bunk beds, showers, full kitchen, living area with large screen tv and guest wi-fi, BBQ patio area, etc. Group cooking gear will be provided. Volunteers should bring their own sleeping bag/pillow, towels, and personal gear.

Travel

Airport pickup provided from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Airport pickup and dropoff times will be sent to registrants when the trip is confirmed.
