The island of St. John in Virgin Islands National Park needs your help more than ever! The island was devastated from Hurricanes Irma and Maria in the summer of 2017. Volunteers will be working on hiking trails as well as historical ruin maintenance and repairs within Virgin Islands National Park. Volunteers will work to maintain and stabilize park trails and historical ruins that have been severely damaged from hurricanes. The work will include running weed whackers, clearing brush with loppers and hand saws, grubbing, digging and maintaining drains, and cutting new tread.

Area and Attractions

The island of St. John is in the northern Caribbean where the waters are beautiful and crystal clear. Volunteers will work under blue skies , and near white sand beaches covered with palm trees. Volunteers will learn about the history of the island and have an opportunity to explore historical ruins. The main town of Cruz Bay offers shopping, local food, and water sports rentals.

Accommodations Description

Volunteers will stay at the Friends Camp at Cinnamon Bay. The camp has five 12 X 16 raised tent platforms with Eureka Copper Canyon 12 person tents, each with 4 large cots leaving plenty of gear space. Volunteers will be expected to share a tent with up to 3 people in each tent. The site has picnic tables and outdoor cooking essentials. Cooking utensils and plates are provided. Mosquitos can be bothersome, so volunteers should be prepared with bug repellent for day and night use and light weight long pants and shirts for camp life. A gravity fed shower and drop toilets are available on site. There is a sink for washing dishes and bottled water will be provided in 5 gallon containers. Volunteers should bring their own work gloves, sheets or light blanket for sleeping, and personal gear.
